The ents attacking Isengard will always be my favorite part of this movie. They build it up so much. They have their whole council and the ents arent sure if they are going and when they decide to go, treebeard is out there like "we may be marching to our doom", and "this is the last march of the ents" and as they walk they play this tragic mournful music and it just feels like such a sad moment and we are about to watch all these wonderful tree people get destroyed.... than the ents get to Isengard and they just absolutely 360-noscope the orcs. They just roll over it like its a big nothing, we dont even see a single ent go down. As you guys pointed out, they even take the time to show that the one ent that appears to take some damage managed to extinguish the fire and he's totally fine, and Saruman is just up there in his tower watching it all crumble with a face that absolutely screams "oh shit! I really did not see this coming...". Peak movie moment.

It also comes straight after the climax of the Battle of the Hornburg/Helm's Deep which means that we're already on a crest from the epic scenes. To cap it all, Samwise's speech and Howard Shore's music then kicks in...

I love how the Ent council meeting was firmly a boring "old person meeting", and you sort of expect the Ents to do nothing. But the second Treebeard sees the destruction Isenguard has caused and realising that a lot of his the tree friends are now dead and he needs to act now, all he has to do is call out and all the slow and careful Ents immediately come to his aid to kick Sarumans army into the freaking curb. All my tree homies hate the Wizard's army.

Remembering now how Tolkien wrote it because he was bothered by the prophecy in Macbeth about Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane: it turned out to just be a trick with guys disguised as trees, and he thought "man, it'd be so much cooler if the trees could actually walk and fight", so he wrote that and it was indeed cool.

The assumptions made about the length of Gandalf’s fall are based on a gravitational acceleration equal to earth. However, based off the distance that Legolas’s elf eyes can see, the curvature of middle earth is less than that of earth, suggesting that it is a more massive planet. Assuming a similar density to earth that would mean an even greater gravitational acceleration, meaning Gandalf fell even further. This fact blew Peter Jackson’s mind, which is why the working title for the film was “the Blue Harvesting Towers,” which incidentally is very similar to the working title of Star Wars.

The opposition to the menu line has always been a strange one to me. Orcs have to eat. I'm sure in the strongholds they're not just fending for themselves. There must be some kind of mess hall and it's the job of some orcs to prepare food for the others. As soon as there are two or more options for things they could eat, that's a menu. It doesn't have to be some extensive, fancy thing with caviar and scallops and what have you. Gruel with chicken bits, gruel without chicken bits. There. A menu

From memory: there are 2 blue wizards that suck, a brown wizard (Radagast) that cares not for much but the animal kingdom, and then Gandalf the Grey, who wasn't supposed to reach the heights he did, and Saruman the White who changed his robe to that "of many colours" when he betrayed the Valar and the people's of Middle-earth. Peter Jackson didn't do the cloak (or robe?) of many colours in the movie, but that was Saruman's new drip. And then Gandalf took Saruman's old title of "The White" after coming back. Interestingly, Saruman was really playing BOTH sides more in the books. He wanted to rule by eventually usurping Sauron. That aspect got muddied a bit when translated to film.

Side Note: Bob Anderson did not do the choreography or fight as Darth Vader in Star Wars ‘A New Hope’ but he did choreograph the lightsaber duels and he did perform the sword fights in the Darth Vader suit for Star Wars ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return if the Jedi’. 23:28 thank you, Ben and Lawrence for adding a clip of the 1978 version of the Lord of the Rings (Ralph Bakshi), which ended at the Two Towers and never touched Return of the King. There are two Rankin and Bass productions of The Hobbit and The Return of the King, but they are their own separate universes….? I guess. Would loooove for you guys to cover those, preferably drunk. Maybe a Christmas Special? A Holiday Special, one might say?

Maybe it's just nostalgia but I always liked the Rankin/Bass Hobbit. Their Return of the King isn't great, but even that has its moments (I think its version of the climactic Mount Doom scene is better than Peter Jackson's), and it ended up almost plugging the gap left by Bakshi's version never getting a part two. Apparently, that was a complete accident, not something Rankin/Bass or their Japanese collaborators ever planned on happening.

I have to admit, I really don't like the change to Faramir in the movie. The whole point of his lack of temptation was to show that despite him not being as physically strong as his brother, his inner strength was what the world really needed. Him being tempted by the ring kind of ruins that aspect
@mattew0113
@mattew0113 Ай бұрын
I always view his temptation as different, Boromir was tempted by the ring with the intention to control it. Faramir wasn’t tempted by the ring itself he was tempted by the chance to as his father puts it ‘show his quality’ and what better way than giving him the one ring. I know a lot of people dislike the changes they made to Faramir (and Aragorn to some extend) compared to the books, but I've always liked that both characters struggle a bit more before they find the right path - it makes it more impactful when Faramir finally decides to give up the ring and help Frodo, and when Aragorn accepts his duties as a king despite his worries about Isildur's failings.

To me Faramir isn’t the problem (he’s cooler in the book tho) it’s Frodo and Sam, they got the worst adaptation changes in the adaptation. Movie Frodo is goddamn useless and annoying, he’s got no spine whatsoever while movie Sam is a clingy boyfriend who gets pissy and whiney. In the book Frodo is the most mature of the four Hobbits given he’s supposed to be 50 years old like Biblo was in the Hobbit, while Sam in the book has got real depth to him, even beyond loving Frodo.

My childhood friend and I and our two wives would hold a Lord of the Rings day every year for about 5 years where we would watch the extended additions of all 3 movies back to back. Yes, that is over 11 hours, but we would run our own commentary, drink a lot, and make themed food during it. We started out just watching it on a TV, but by the final iteration we were watching it on a giant projection screen that was the entire width of my living room. Fortunately for me, I didn't have kids at the time, and I had a good paying teaching job in New Jersey in the United States, so I used some of the bad math too much money I accidentally saved up each year for the summer to buy a $900 projector (in 2009 $) and a $300 automatically lowering and raising Projection screen. It's still there in 2024 & still used, a solid investment

If you guys are looking back at the Lord of the Rings movies and the craze around it, I think you should look into The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game aka LOTR Warhammer from Games Workshop. It was a crazy crazy success for the company, they had a pretty deep cooperation with the movie production and Weta Workshop. Some of the GW sculptors/staff were extras in the movies (the Perry Brothers were riders of Rohan, one of them is missing an arm! (He lost in in a cannon misfire in a historical re-enactment battle)) For a brief time I think the LOTR miniature sales overtook WH 40k. They changed their monthly magazine to have a major focus on LOTR, with each side of the magazine having a different cover but upside down to each other, you'd read the warhammer or LOTR section then flip over to read the rest.

So you’re telling me this movie with an all-Star cast, hundreds of extras, a ton of real sets and models, a small armies worth of costumes, armor, weapons, prosthetics, puppetry, and intense battle scenes costs 94 Million…meanwhile Joker 2 cost over 200 million.

The Fifth Element is one of the most overrated movies in the history of movies. It's a movie about a ball of death and five rocks that have to be collected so the characters have something to do to stop ball of death. "what should our big inciting incident be? What should the plot revolve around?" "I dunno, lets just call it the death ball till we come up with something good. Let's focus on Mila Jovavich's outfits first."

"I don't know how anybody made these, it doesn't even make sense to me" I don't even know if this is a joke, I literally have the same exact thought every time I rewatch these movies. @13:30 That kid is Haleth son of Hama. His dad was the guard at Edoras who let Gandalf keep his staff. He dies in the books somewhere else I think... but in the movie he gets eaten by a warg. So that is why Aragorn takes a moment to comfort him, he knows his dad is dead and was a pretty good bloke.

The Battle of Helm's Deep here completely blew me away at age 17 seeing it on the big screen. I thought the depiction of the Battle in the 1978 animated Ralph Bakshi version was pretty bad-ass in its own way, but the first time I saw THIS version, I was totally at the edge of my seat with my eyes popping out and my bottom jaw just hanging down like a swinging door hinge, at a loss for words. Definitely a life-defining moment at the movies just like the first and last installments.

Thanks, Maya(!) (I'm kidding with that last part, obviously)

Interesting fact, because the film's special effects were much more complex than the previous film, it required a lot more blue-screen work than the first film, which led to the crew jokingly saying that the film was a sort of "Blue Harvest", which was coincidentally the working title of the original "Star Wars" from 1977

Faramir ignoring the ring is also why they didn't include Tom Bombadill, because if they spend all the start of the movie hyping up how powerful the ring is, but then include a character that gandalf says "is immune to it and he'd just forget about it and lose it", it robs the ring of all the power they've built up.

Theodin has been a character that has resonated with me ever since I saw the origina films. He is a man that has abandoned all hope, but keeps on fighting regardless. I love that everyone remembers Sam as a great friend and hero. But like, he's absolutely the reason Gollum doesn't find any redemption. I dunno, if they'd just been kind, they could've thrown the ring into the fire, Gollum would just die of old age eventually, and Frodo would have all his fingers

Yeah in the books it's a bit clearer that that is Sam's big flaw, and Frodo is genuinely wiser and kinder than him. He's never fooled by Gollum and genuinely wants to help him for altruistic reasons.
