Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is back! This time in the comic book role he's been attacked to since 2014 that introduces not only Black Adam himself but The Justice Society including Doctor Fate, Hawkman plus the enemy a guy who's a demon or something. Despite some positive feedback the general consensus is that it's fine with some okay action, character beats and a not so invincible jet. This review is from our podcast The Weekly Planet that comes out every Monday which you should check out if you like things that are "okay."

Caravan Of Garbage has been pushed to Thursday and you can blame The Rock himself for that

You could spend all of Eternium searching for Unobtainium only to end up with Vibranium :) Would be good to see The Rock finally work with some great directors & scripts and actually challenge himself, wish he'd be more like Bautista & Cena in partnering up with great directors and letting them take the lead in those projects! With him furiously hyping up a Black Adam vs Superman movie and seemingly skipping Shazam, it feels like they're already rushing to it like they did with BvS with not enough good storytelling done beforehand to make you truly care and for it to really matter. I fear that movie will essentially be the 3rd Act of Man of Steel but this time for most of the entire movie with insane amounts of CGI destruction with Black Adam (cos it'll be The Rock's movie on which he'll be a Producer) not losing!

@@AllInTheGame01 Woooo now this I can get behind! I’m with James on this, DJ is always DJ, but the movie is just “fine”. Cavill’s appearance was the high point for me, even if your take on “speeding to Black Adam vs Shazam” is on point. His IG post the other day mentions “audience first”, which again is fine, but to your point, if we just keep pleasing audiences who, at this point, pretty much excuse mediocre writing/pacing in favor of spectacle, we will continue to get “fine” movies from The Rock and Seven Bucks. I loved Peacemaker and Cena was a highlight in an excellently crafted show from Gunn.

Speaking of The Rock doing a Drax impression, a good parallel career of a wrestler doing compelling roles is Dave Bautista. He has talked a lot about how much he wants to do interesting roles above all else. He consistently collaborates with Denis Villeneue and James Gunn. He's in a James Bond movie and now a Ryan Johnson film as well. Because he can be a heel and be beaten and be an amazing hero, he's really doing a lot of compelling work. Just thought of that during The Rock talk.

Indeed. The thing about BA is that he is basically Vlad the impaler, a king who is willing to become a tyrant and do whatever is neccesary for the sake of his people. The rock can't pull off that level of nuance in a million years, this movie is basically just another morbius but with the rock.

What bugged me the most was the plot point about the inscription on the crown being reversed. Because... that's not how either languages or writing systems work. For this to work, you would need a writing system that uses ideograms (like chinese characters or hieroglyphics) rather than either an alphabetical or syllabic script. Those characters would however need to be bilaterally symmetrical, i.e. look the same as their mirror image. Not really plausible, but still kinda possible. What is less possible is that the language used would lack any sort of morphemes denoting the agent and the patient of the sentence in order to make it ambiguous enough to be reversible like that. And clearly marking who does what to whom is one of the most basic functions of language so I can't imagine one that could be work without it.

33:10 Pretty sure the reason Dr. Fate just left his helmet lying on the table is that absolutely nothing happens if you touch it, and Cyclone was just trolling Atom Smasher, because he's pretty naïve. What I don't get is what growing to the size of a six-storey building has to do with smashing atoms? Or why everyone else jumped out of the jet and just abandoned him with no way to get down to the ground? Was there a pilot? Or an auto-pilot that he could control? Poor kid.

When he was put into suspended animation I was waiting for credits to role and they had the glowing tease. I would have been happy it ending there. BUT then we get the third act which felt like a completely separate movie tacked on where you have a decent villain who did nothing and took little to no effort to stop. There should have been a sequel where the world burns and its a constant fight then Black Adam comes back.

Hey James and Maso, firstly, great video/podcast as always, I gave it a like. I only just watched this last night (too many things to watch these days!) Just a quick one, the guy that played the villain in this, also played Jafar in Aladdin, where he did a similar morph-into-a-CGI-monster-in-the-final-act-only-to-be-defeated-easily thing. Although in Aladdin it's his hubris that defeats him not Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson splitting him in half.

Im making a huge deal out of this, but the Rock has such fragile ego To the point that he cannot play a "villian" or "antihero" his roles MUST always make people love him and admire him Reason why they included the kid, he is telling children at the audience how to feel about him... He also self-proclaimed himself as DC Earth's Strongest hero, you bet that was in his contract for joining DC... He is like f%¿&ng Tinkerbell... the moment we stop giving him attention, he flat out dies Question for those who care enough to answer: Honestly, Do you think the Rock will allow Superman to beat/defeat Black Adam?
@juwankane5150
@juwankane5150 Жыл бұрын
It’s so wild because he became a megastar in wrestling by being an anti-hero. He was a Tweener in wrestling speak. He was the villain but he was so massively entertaining that he became the most popular wrestler alive. If the Rock had put that into his acting roles rather than being cookie cutter stoic muscle man he’d be far and away the biggest actor on the planet rather than just a big actor.
@steverogers7601

I agree with this. It’s pretty corny that in the fast and furious movies he had in his contract to get hit an equal amount of times as Dom did so it doesn’t look like he’d lose. I get it from an optics perspective but that’s really corny to know. I guess I’m just tired of the rock and his brand of celebrity. It feels at times like it’s more about how he looks than what he’s putting out there because a lot of his films are very mediocre despite entertaining for the moment.

I’ve always felt this movie was something that the rock wanted to be adequate enough so he can use to push his brand. This did not feel like a black Adam movie but more like another run of the mill rock movie. It keeps his name fresh in the public’s mind, makes tons of money, and gives the people who won’t criticize much something that they like. It’s a proper play move from a celebrity perspective but the public gets something that’s just alright/ok.

While listening to maso/ James rant about when will rock do his true lies or terminator type of great movie. I realised that rock has always been attached to projects which were already famous like he started with mummy/scorpion king then he was in fast and furious and then he was in jumanji. All these projects were already famous though adding rock to them did increase both his and the projects popularity but studios still don’t think that the rock is ready for prime time as a sole headliner for a movie even in red notice which wasn’t good he was alongside gal gadot and Ryan Reynolds both of them are equivalently famous to rock. Let’s what future does success or lack of it of black Adam has in store for the rock

I feel that with superhero films like these that are at the most passable marvel succeeds because it’s a established universe and we are already attached to these iterations. On the other hand with films like this and The Mighty Morbin Living vampire fall shorter in our eyes because they are desperately trying to establish continuity and usually fail horribly because it doesn’t feel natural.
