It definitely is in contention as one of the best, most beautiful compositions of Williams' work on Star Wars. However, unlike "Duel of Fates" which has the luxury of being set up to dazzling fight scenes & action, "Across the Stars" has the unfortunate luck of being juxtaposed with scenes between Anakin & Padme, who unfortunately don't have any romantic chemistry. While the music itself is beautiful, it sucks that it plays a role of having to remind you that we're supposed to be buying this romance, when honestly it just doesn't work. Maybe that was John Williams' intention though lol. He saw the footage of Hayden & Natalie, and was like "Okay, I gotta salvage this", and went hard with this amazing love theme.

They had lot of problems filming it too. Ford was injured while filming so they had to adjust it to salvage the movie and it's a testament to everyone's skill that the movie works. Honestly I think it has a much more coherent narrative than Raiders does, with a very clear character arc for Indy.
@GuineaPigEveryday2 жыл бұрын
@@Lukkilikka a more coherent narrative? How. I mean all three films have mostly simple understandable narratives becuz they are adventure films. In the case of temple of doom there's all this weird stuff about voodoo, slave labour, sacrifices, all this background stuff about the people and these stones and their magic etc etc. All that Raiders is: Nazis want Ark which can unleash great power. We don't need to have all this random stuff explained to us, just that the ark is powerful, its mysterious and simple. Temple of Doom is overly complicated and spends most of the film just in one place. There is very little action except in the final 20-30 minutes where all of its condensed in one big overlong set piece. Raiders spaces out the action and actually provides adventure for the main character to go on.

The one thing I hate about Temple of Doom is there's a callback to Raiders where someone comes at Indy with a sword and he casually reaches for his gun - but he doesn't have his gun! You know what's funny about Shmi's death and the effects it has on Anakin? There's literally no reason for him to believe that she was still a slave for all that time. He never blames himself for not freeing her, not on screen at any rate. He never blames the Jedi for not freeing her, or not letting him go and free her. He blames the Tuskens for killing her, and himself for not being able to save her. I can't think of any good reason, considering all that, why Anakin couldn't know that his mother was freed by Lars. We can make the Jedi look well-meaning but ineffectual by having them send somebody to pick up Shmi, only to find that she's already been freed, then shrug and go "Ah well, no point in hanging around here now" and report back. If Anakin mentions his nightmares to Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan just tells him: "Your mother is safe, don't worry about it, remember to let go of attachment" then what really changes in Anakin's motivation? He can still make the choice to abandon his protection duties and jet off to Tatooine; he didn't go there to free Shmi, but because he was having prophetic nightmares about her. It's not like he was likely to go and visit her as a free woman, when he never managed to get time to visit her when he thought she was a slave, promise to free her be damned.
@BoleDaPole2 жыл бұрын
Admittedly this part is a big vague in the film but thankfully gets covered in the Episode II novelisation , but from what we can assume from the film is that Anakin didn't feel a need to free his mother as she worked for Watto doing basic domestic labor, and was later freed. We can also assume that he could feel she was happy or content, because he felt her pain later on which made him go find her. I'm sure he would've wanted to go back home but he was far too busy training to become a Jedi. It's almost like the film is trying to teach us about sacrifice , idk 🤷♂️
@maryreilly51022 жыл бұрын
I don't think freeing slaves was the job the Jedi. It is clear in the first episode that not even Padme could free her, even though she had political power. Qui-gonn and Obi Wan see all the slaves in Tatooine but do nothing about it because in a way they exist to uphold the current political order. They are not just "guardians of the galaxy" in a trite sense where any wrondoing is punished by them. They are still an arm of the Republic and tatooine is run by mafia-like people that are very difficult to uproot, just like on planet Earth. In a way, part of the Jedi training was letting go of attachment regardless of whether the people you are attached to during childhood are safe or not. I mean, letting go of attachment is not only "I let go when I know they are safe" but also the opposite, "I let go even though I know they are in pain", which can instil fear and anger into a Jedi etc etc...

Something else I'll say is that AOTC probably has my favourite ending to any other SW film (bar ROTJ). The Clones being loaded up onto the ships while Palpatine watches his plans continue to unfold... a visual gesture from Bail Organa's fist to show his frustration at the sight before him... and the Imperial march rising in the background. And then it's immediately juxtaposed with the secret wedding of Anakin and Padme, with Across the Stars taking over as the new musical score. The scenery is gorgeous with the sun in the background. While waiting, Anakin becomes desperate for ways to stall Padme and eventually resorts to visiting family with Padme. The plan goes foul when Anakin realizes that he hadn't visited his family in so long that they'd all since died. Anakin eventually confesses the truth to Padme, who forgives him. Count Dooku is publicly leading the Separatists (an alliance of various leaders in the republic who wish to secede). Palpatine is leading the Republic, and wants to pass the military creation act to create a military for the republic. Secretly, Palpatine and Dooku are working together to start a large war between the separatists and the republic. Dooku has the Separatists making a droid army, while Palpatine is trying to pass the previously mentioned military creation act. Senator Padme leads a coalition in the senate that opposes the Military Creation Act, so Palpatine has to get rid of her. He tells Dooku to kill her, so Dooku hires Jango Fett who hires a shapeshifter who tries to kill Padme. Padme is not killed, but she is exiled to Naboo for the protection. At the same time, Obi-Wan finds out that Jedi Master Sifo Dyas had commissioned a clone army in secret, and that the Separatists are making a droid army. Obi-Wan tells this to the Republic Senate, but gets captured by Dooku. Dooku tells Obi-Wan in captivity that a Sith Lord (Palpatine) is controlling both sides. I do not know why he would tell Obi-Wan this, it is contrary to his entire plan. Because of the droid army and Obi-Wan's capture, the Republic Senate votes to give Palpatine emergency powers to activate the Clone Army as the republic's army. Without Padme's opposition, it passes, and the Republic declares war on the Separatists.

I think people don't give enough credit to some of the creativity in this film, especially on Geonosis with the battle at the end. You've got a desert world that feels different to Tatooine, flying bug people, each of the arena monsters feel very unique. Even Kamino, it's not just a water world of fish people that you see in countless sci fi stories, the people have long necks and the buildings are on stilts, with a harsh white interior. The ST had some cool ideas like the salt planet Crait and the junk planet Jakku, but a lot of the worlds just felt bland. The Obi-wan plot is good. It's really the Anakin/Padme Romance that really drags the movie down to most people. But when I first saw this as a kid, I was at that age where it seemed like *all* movies had a "boring talking bit" before you got to the good stuff.

In the fight with Dooku, why does Yoda struggle with the giant rock instead of just pulling Obi wan and anakin out of the way with the force? And yes Yoda should never have used a light saber he should be so powerful he doesn't need it, nevermind all that jumping and spinning daftness.

If you want Yoda to use a lightsaber have him wield like 12 tiny ones with his mind and Yoda just stands there motionless while they spin and twirl around him in perfect unison

Sith shouldn’t have used lightsabers either. The emperor calls it a “Jedi weapon” as if sith are above that. My assumption was that Vader only used one because he was an ex Jedi. But now they all do and they’re red cos they’re the bad guys. So fucking lame.

@@Bloodynine606 I always thought the Sith should have more powerful and varied force powers than the Jedi, but they are just better at lightsaber fighting + have lightning. Also the fight in Palpatine's office is the worst example of this, where the guy who calls it a jedi weapon apparently has a custom one himself. The fight should have been Palpatine killing the Jedi without a saber, and then being forced to use one to fight Windu.

32:52 Nice work, Mason. No sugarcoating it for the Prequel crowd. Yoda should never have been near a lightsabre.

you know, now that you bring it up, that lightsaber really wasn't with the skywalkers long. Anakin had it for like 3 years, the obi wan kept it in a box for 20, Luke used it for maybe a year, then it sat in someone else's box for another 20.

I remember seeing this in theaters (I was 7) and it was such a genuinely entertaining movie the whole time. I remember the entire theater laughing during the Dooku v Yoda fight. One of my favorite SW movies for nostalgia and imaginativeness alone :)
@ventiss57272 жыл бұрын
It’s called a cinema. Not a theatre. Theatres are where you watch stage productions like plays or pantomimes. You can theoretically watch a film in a theatre, but you can’t watch a play in a cinema. Cinema is the place you’re thinking of.

I loved the big crab monster but the Episode 2 guidebook detailed how those crabs are usually pretty docile and don't harm people. Meaning, that critter was probably captured, tortured and starved until it felt the need to attack Obi-wan. That takes away from that scene a bit...
@smollgoodman40852 жыл бұрын
27:20 small detail in this scene that stuck with me, that I don't think was intentional. Anakin's hair slowly gets more poofy through the scene, the wind makes it inflate like his ego, while he is internalizing that he cannot save Padme right now, and whishing he had more power to save her and still catch the count. being so blinded by love he would risk his entire position as a Jedi, WHAT HE WANTED HIS ENTIRE CHILDHOOD, just to make sure she is alive. His hair reflects his emotional turmoil, by slowly building rage internally, while his hair becomes very fluffy from the wind.

I would argue that if yoda had to have lightsaber combat skills, it would all be defensive and even have an edge of mischief where in he uses the flow or his opponents attacks to make them run into their own mistakes as they begin to lose focus of their emotions growing frustrated with the way a true master of the force fights. A true Jedi. Like imagine he strifes jukes and guards with his lightsaber and only ever guards and he does it almost like a rhythmic dance moving in Harmony with the flow of the force. Imagine neat lore shit like that which would not only strengthen a character arc but also make more sense cohesively with the over all themes of the story
