It could be argued that Phantom Menace actually has aged well. Instead of focusing on the annoying shitball kid, awkward terrible writing and the racist accented aliens, people are now all about the weird political allegory and random lines that imply loads of world building because they're so out there. I think Phantom Menace still holds up really well. @@HyraxusPrimus I mean, it's a terrible movie with terrible characters and a nonsense story that doesn't make sense as part of the overall Star Wars universe but is also bad as part of a trilogy or even just as a standalone story, but I'm sure the special effects were fine. I was in film school right after this came out (2002) and the bullet time scene is incredibly influential in film history because if was one of the key scenes that proved the concept that computers could be used in camera effects to be more than just making digital shapes and Animations. My roommate, who now works in VR, was obsessed with it and we spent a LOT of time talking about it. It was a huge deal at the time and is one of the things that led to things like image stabilization being standard, facial tracking for apps and effects, and many things we use every day. Then some scenes where obviously reality mixes with dreams, and there's probably more tech and science-fiction to it - all right. He would never fully appreciate the implications unless he experienced the reality of it himself. Also, from a storytelling perspective, Neo is the audience's PoV character. It's important that things are *shown* to him, not just told, so that they're also shown to the audience - who, let's be honest, includes a fair amount of people who would have never understood the Matrix otherwise.

Matrix did pioneer bullet time. Before that, there was dead time. Which is for example where at the beginning of the matrix trinity jumps in the air and it’s frozen as the camera pans around her. That’s the time. However bullet time was capturing at 500 frames a second over many cameras to actually have motion rather than it being a single frozen moment of time it’s slow motion. I just figured I’d mention that as prior to the matrix Dead time was highly overused on movies like lost in space and various other films, but the matrix introduced bullet time which really changed everything!… And then everyone copied it and we came in over you just give me as well ha ha… Great video guys!

I always fought him on the tracks and jumped last minute to make it as close to the movie as I could. Also, when you fight smith in the final fight, you can jump when he flies through the wall and it plays an animated cutscene akin to how Neo jumps over Smith as he flies through said wall. I always thought that was cool that it’s not scripted and you only get it if you jump like in the movie.

I saw it for the first time in early 2020 in a movie theater, right before COVID. Can confirm it still rocks, even for newcomers.

I was in Basic training when this move came out. It blew my mind. This was a pivotal moment in cinema. Going to watch the Matrix now, last time I did was in the theater. Thanks guys.

I think the question about dying irl might be related to the simulation and simulacrum theme stuff. You can be aware that systems and concepts in your society are made up or exist only because people believe or want them to, but they still have an impact on your life.

I find myself rewatching your shows, and they are still enjoyable and funny. Well done for producing something interesting enough to be rewatched. On the Matrix I find it better each time I watch it, such a great film

Fun fact: Australian music icon Michael Hutchence of INXS was cast as a full time cast member, acting as a ally to Neo. This was partly due to the movie being shot in Sydney. Hutchence was also in talks to play a role in a Quentin Tarantino film, along with a Robert De Niro film. However, after his death in 1997, all roles were removed. RIP

Saw this opening day in Brooklyn in the theater and there were only like five people in the audience with me. We all had LOW expectations - the trailers weren’t great- and we just wanted to see a sci-fi movie matinee. Our minds were BLOWN. After the movie we all gathered in the lobby and started geeking out about the film. We were strangers then, but some of us are still friends. I called all my friends (no real internet or texting then) and begged them to see the Matrix. I also got to see the film months later when it opening in Rotterdam - another amazing experience. But that… is another story.

Defiantly aged well ... there are a few odd effects but overall still great. I'm 49 and was telling a young lad (20) at work that the Matrix was now on Netflix's .... he was "What's that?" ... honestly he didn't even know of the Movie. So based on my high praise he watched at the weekend and on Monday wouldn't stop going on about it! So even people who were not born when this was released can enjoy it today!
