5:52 "They don't have a poker face or a tell, just that unbiased, unblinking eye." That sums up what makes the daleks scary to me. The blank expression and complete silence as it studies its surroundings. Like the weeping angels, there's something tense about the villain being right next to the characters and listening.

One of the most important Doctor Who stories ever. I'll admit I find the animation of this a bit clunky (it's much improved with Macra Terror) but the script is strong and it's important to judge this one on the story itself and not just the reconstruction. The Daleks are insane, clever beings and it's a highly original and clever story that introduces Troughton effortlessly. David Whitaker is a genius and underrated writer for the show.

I think it’s interesting how the Dalek plot to slowly rebuild almost takes a back seat and is left on the side burner as more and more attention is given to the colony’s inner turmoil and the Daleks don’t even matter to that drama for the first 5 parts however the Doctor always stresses their importance and it’s not till part 6 where they break off and become the most powerful and dangerous group in the fighting. I can somewhat complain that the boring colony stuff takes bigger precedence over the Daleks but it’s an obvious set up and it goes well with the idea these guys being so subtle before it’s too late
@mrbluesky4838
@mrbluesky4838 3 жыл бұрын
Of it wasn’t for the rebels at the colony the Daleks wouldn’t have gotten to power. Lesterson would’ve been able to deactivate them when he realised what was really going on with the Daleks but the rebels blackmailed and then sedated him. I was glad to see Janley and Bragen die in the end.

I’ve tried to watch as much of the existing Troughton era as much as possible and even starting watching the animated reconstructions and to answer your question I don’t think Ben is super useless but clearly he was written for the Hartnell era to do all the heavy lifting action and once Troughton came and it became more sciency the companions got worse and once Jamie arrived they were done for

Im heartbroken that most of the Troughton era series are missing. My three favourite series from the time were this one, The Evil Of The Daleks and The Tomb Of The Cybermen, which thankfully still exists and I have on DVD. I appreciate that the animated reproductions are about the best we'll ever get, but the production line scene is disappointing in that the Dalek creatures are just tipped into the bottom half of the shell, whereas I'm sure they were placed in the top under the lid. This is borne out by the fact that in the fight scene in front of the Emperor Dalek at the end of The Evil Of The Daleks, one of the creatures is seen throbbing in its death throws at the top of the machine with the lid gone.

A lot of people don't really like the recreations animation style, but this was what sold me on it. The way they animated the Daleks elevated it even further than the original story. All the production flubs and 60's charm is gone, leaving just an alien life-form that's impossible to read.

Years ago, I purchased a book that included the script and existing telesnaps for this story at a convention. Read it and loved it. It's been one of the top five stories I wish would return to the archives complete. The animation is good and if that's the only way to experience it, it will have to do. I love how manipulative the Daleks are and how they play the humans to seize power. Using some of the musical cues from the original Daleks is a nice touch.

How does the full audio survive without the footage? How was these episode stored?
@MrTARDIS
@MrTARDIS 5 жыл бұрын
Long story short, film is expensive and difficult to store. So many shows were simply wiped so the BBC could re-use the film. Basically, archival was not a priority. Some episodes survive because copies were sent abroad to other broadcasters but many of those were also wiped. Audio survived because dedicated fans would literally put tape recorders to their TV sets and record the audio. For Power of the Daleks, the footage of the Doctor, Ben and Polly discovering the Daleks covered in cobwebs survived because it was used for a trailer which survived being wiped. Josh Snares has some great videos on his channel about all of this and the lost episodes. I recommend checking him out!

MrTARDISreviews This is a nitpick, as that was an otherwise brilliant tl;dr, but it wasn’t film that was wiped but tape, as all Doctor Who was shot on tape at the time (the first story to use film was Spearhead From Space, but even that was a one-off). Great video by the way! Loving this series! Don’t suppose we might see a similar series for the cybermen at some point, eh?
