The worst thing to me is that the animation leaves the best scene out. That's where the Doctor and companions lie down amongst the dead bodies in the corridor, and pretend to be dead, as a Dalek inspects the bodies for signs of life, its eye stalk going from corpse to corpse, ready to blast away at any movement. Truly terrifying to a seven year old, I can tell you.

I did not hide behind the sofa; I hid behind the kitchen door, which was in turn behind the sofa and peered occasionally around the corner despite myself. It's especially bad if you consider that an "amateur" animation package like MMD, even in 2016, could have done **FAR** better work than this. OpenToonz was released as open-source (based on the Toonz package) in March 2016. And Toonz is what Studio Ghibli uses for their computer animation. Really, there's NO excuse for such shoddy work. About the only thing that would look more stilted, clunky and un-lifelike would be the acting, scripting and direction in the latest two seasons of DrWho.

Love the videos! Just a slight correction about the 35mm film. Although episodes like Power 6, Wheel 6, and Space Pirates 2 were recorded to that format, they were still 625 line SD signals from the cameras, just using a different storage medium from tape. So none of them can be represented in HD. But for the ones that survive, at least they are master recordings, and not telerecordings where 16mm cameras were pointed at TV screens, like the other surviving 60's episodes. Still cruel that Power 6 is not among the survivors, of course.

I took my family to watch Power of the Daleks in the cinema - they had a one-off showing that I managed to get tickets to. Apropos of nothing, back in the late 90's, I was friends with a fellow Aussie who did classic DW reconstructions under the name Change of Identity (taken, of course, from the episode of the same name in The Reign of Terror). He did excellent reconstructions and I still have VHS copies of The Savages, The Power of the Daleks, The Moonbase and The Enemy of the World. Ironically, the missing five episodes of The Enemy of the World was discovered intact in a television relay station storage room in Nigeria, so the reconstruction is now rendered moot, but it's still an interesting watch. He did very thorough work, so all the clips from Power are included in his reconstruction. I've often wondered if there was a way to transfer VHS to digital, but I've tried several different ways without success. :-(

Clearly, attempts were made to closely match the post-regeneration depiction of the actor with the 8mm film, but it just ends up jarring with the rendering used for the remainder of the serial. Character movements are also at their weakest here and that's not even mentioning the clothing error. Many years ago during the very early internet I joined a Doctor Who chat forum & suggested that I thought the missing episodes should be animated. Most people didn't agree with me but now that they are doing just that, I think they're doing an amazing job. Power of the Daleks (which came out before I was born) gave me chills & had me on the edge of my seat during parts of it! The only thing I think they should have done is used the original footage where it exists (and animate the rest of the story) but I hope one day that the classic series can exist this way in its entirety.

The only thing I didn't like about it was Ben had a weird squint eye he also was in his Vulcan outfit during the scene where they are awaiting the Vulcan crew

From what I saw in the first 2 minutes the animation was so true to the telesnaps. I might understand the need to be economical in the animation, eliminating the closeups would lesson the limited animation short comings, however, from the Loose Canon reconstruction of what does survive of the original live action clips should have been preserved, my humble opinion. A small criticism, however.

The animation with the Daleks are pretty good, but the human part reminds me too much of the Archer cartoon series where I'd be expecting Pam Poovey to make an appearance.

There were gonna show previous incarnations, they ignored it and did it in the brain of Morbius which people ignored but in 2020...

I Personally have no complaints at all about the state of the animation of The Power Of The Daleks, nor about PatrickTroughton being selected to play the new Doctor Who.

An American making his way through classic Doctor Who for the first time here. Re: The Brain of Morbius- I presumed the never-before-seen regenerations were those of Morbius. Is that a valid interpretation? Thanks for posting these videos. You're so knowledgeable about the show, you should be called Professor Who. :)

Hi TJM060765 as someone from the UK who grew up with Tom Bakers doctor & now having watched these over and over, I agree that they are the previous incarnations of Mobius. We saw all of the Doctors up to that point in that clip and I'd agree that the rest were of Mobius. Some people think they were unseen instances of The Doctor (a younger 1st Doctor for example) but I disagree. That was a great story - I read that it was loosely based on Frankenstein.

Seeing those blurry clips and tele-snaps, it brings it all back to me. I was lucky enough to watch The Power of the Daleks when it aired live in 1966. (I was aged 5). I can actually recall a few moments - especially the first regeneration of the Doctor. The animations look OK. But for me, alas, (having seen the original), I don't think I'd ever be able to watch the animated version. It's just not the same! I hope they find the real thing one day.

Interesting video. I know it would be asking a lot but it would be nice to have a consistent animated version of Polly. This one is not too bad but the version in Macra Terror is nothing like her facially.

Would your disappearing DVD joke constitute a "Lost, Lost Episode?" :-)I thought that Robert James was superb as Lesterson. So blinded by what he is doing that he fails to see just how dangerous the Daleks are. Watching him descend into madness is chilling and it is just so appropriate that his final line is "I am your servant"...Great analysis as always!

Robert James gives an equally unnerving performance as Ven Glynd in the first episode of Blake's 7.

He had a great skill in bringing his characters very close to the edge, didn't he? A very underrated actor.

Not gonna lie, I appreciate the amount of effort put into these animated reconstructions and I love your comparison videos but....I kind of prefer the loose canon reconstructions. The quality of the sound in these 60s stories is poor compared to later episodes, and it becomes jarring to watch the high quality animation over the audio from the episodes- they just don't synch in my mind. Not to mention as great as the animation is it always looks a bit stilted to me (the one exception of this being the recent Macra Terror release). I appreciate the work and Im glad they're doing this since other fans love them but I do still prefer the telesnaps. With that said I'd LOVE a fully animated version of Marco Polo or Fury From the Deep.

I'm surprised the 35mm prints for Part Six weren't preserved, considering that Episode 2 of "The Space Pirates" of all serials was preserved for "historical significance" for being shot on the same medium. Somehow Part Six of "The Power of the Daleks" didn't seem as historically important to the BBC despite meeting the same criterion.

A number of other 35mm prints were destroyed, including episode 5 of the wheel in space, episode 4 of the daleks and episode 3 of planet of the giants There was often no logic to it
