Just before I first watched this episode, my mother and I were joking, about the ways we Americans pronounce the word “Dalek,” and ended up imagining Lina Lamont from Singing in the Rain, getting cast in Doctor Who. “Rrrround tones, rrrrround tones. Dah-leks.” “Dallicks!” “Dah-leks.” “Darleks.” Then, I watched Daleks in Manhattan. It was like they had been reading my mind. Made the episode more enjoyable for me.

I differ with Mr. Tardis on the relative merits of Evil of the Daleks. I watched it when it was originally broadcast in 1967, then repeated in 1968. It remains seared in my memory. The climactic Dalek civil war in episode 7 alone assures its place among the greatest Dalek stories of all time. But it has a good deal more going for it, including its stellar cast and the marvellous mansion house, Grim's Dyke, where it was filmed. What's more, the Daleks have never been more menacing. Despite its shortcomings, it remains my favourite Dalek story.

There’s a lot of randomly really funny/campy moments in Daleks in Manhattan that are great. In one part the Daleks start trying to secretly discuss their doubts about Sec, and so one of them “looks over his shoulder” to see if anyones listening, and the entire Dalek head does a full 180 at a comically slow speed. There’s another shot where the Pig Slaves are taking the lift to the top floor of the building to stop the Doctor and in the middle of all the action and tension there’s just a shot of all these Pigmen awkwardly waiting in the lift that made me spit out my drink.

Just me who thinks Magician's Apprentice/Witches Familiar is quite good? Like not the best thing ever but honestly I've never thought the tank scene was that bad - isn't it kind of supposed to be ridiculous? Like the Doctor's lost all connection with reality and is just arsing about doing daft stuff I dunno I've not seen it in a while - maybe it won't hold up but I remember quite enjoying it last time I saw it

I was introduced to DW in the US as a lad in the '70s. Tom's always been MY Doctor &, gotta say, "Genesis of the Daleks" is, in my opinion, the best SERIAL of all time, including "nu-DW"! It's a testimony to everything involved in telling a good story is there & it works! I grew up on some great sci-fi TV & been exposed to "limited budget" production issues. The mark of a good story is how well it gets me so into the thing w/all the bargain sets, costumes & special effects working against it. "Star Trek" TOS was a generally good show. "Genesis" gets you so into the situation that you don't even notice how threadbare everything is! And to an American, DW being considered a "kids show" is laughable when you see the horrors of WWI style trench warfare, genocide, the oppressive nature of a bunker, mass murder & complex philosophical debate worthy of Plato in this ONE serial! I can see now why Mary Whitehouse HATED this show! Oh, well, her loss. Hopefully, she never got to see the 1st "Planet of the Apes". It was retroactively rated "G" (all ages) in the States for current day video release & it showed nekkid man @$$, subtle prejudice analogy & even the world having been nearly wiped out by nuclear war!....😝

Agree with a ton of this. Manhattan story is overhated, I love how it pits the Daleks' two core instincts (purity and obedience) against each other. Also spiderman is in it. Evil of the Daleks is way overhyped and I think it will lose a lot of luster when more people watch the animation. Asylum is too high though, for me that is dead last

I think we lose a helluva lot without seeing the actual episodes. I get the animated DVDs because I'm a completist, but after one or two views I find myself going back to the original soundtracks and treating them as if they were Big Finish or radio plays. The cartoon versions don't engage me as much, and I often find the animation distracting.

The reason the episode gets so much hype is because this episode cemented the Daleks place in the Whoniverse because in this story the Daleks are vulnerable and that is when the Daleks are always at their best they are evil Conniving and filled with pure hatred, this episode basically made the Daleks the scary villains we know them to be. I personally don’t mind the animations because it’s better than not seeing the episode at all xx

While I would disagree with a few of the placings you have for a few of the mid to top 10 stories, this a fairly agreeable list imo. I did actually watch the animation by Josh Snares for "the Daleks' Master Plan" and while it is very long and had to be spaced out, it was a really dark and grimm story that felt intensely rewarding in a few parts. Feast of Steven got an automatic pass though.

Braver man than me putting Evil in at #19! What the hell, man?😂 Otherwise, I think we can generally agree that Steven Moffat - in his role as both writer and producer - didn't produce great Dalek stories. They just weren't that good in his run. What is more interesting, however, is that Chris Chibnal was so good at it,... Just a shame that the rest of his work wasn't so strong.

I considered it. However I used that track for the intro and prologue and didn't want to obviously repeat it. It also meant I could use those drum beats to lead into the segment on what was a longer quote than normal. The other track doesn't have that freedom.

I watched Destiny of the Daleks again recently and I liked it a lot. It’s not great, but I found it more entertaining than a lot of the over-the-top 21st century Daleks story. I do agree with my brother though, who says they should have left Davros dead after Genesis. He shows up way too much, like a Batman supervillain. I’m not sure what my favorite dalek story is. Even Genesis has some filler. I don’t even like Daleks that much. Maybe Revelation, just because of all the non-dalek characters. It has that Caves of Androzani feel, where the characters are bigger than the plot.

The Daleks only really a brief cameo appearance in that one. They turn up with barely seven minutes left of the last episode (Part 6), and are only onscreen for a total of about eighty seconds. On that basis, "The Pilot" is more of a Dalek story, perhaps :)
