I love your videos and have learned so much from you on how to make beautiful tie dyes. This one was very informative but I would love it if you could do one similar but covering general color theory and how it relates to dying as well as how to fully utilize the color wheel as a tool. I would like to learn more about how to select color palettes for my dyes that will create stunning effects and minimize learning mistakes. I have found that I especially enjoy making ice dyes and while I have had some very beautiful and vibrant outcomes I have also come out with a lot of brown outs that are not so beautiful. I'm also curious if you are familiar with using dye resists. I have an idea of a design I'd like to try involving putting a logo into the design as a negative or ghost image in the colors, and I'm not really sure what the best way to go about executing this would be. Thanks for your videos and keep them up!! JP
@MrTieDye6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I am glad to be of help, and yes at some point I can make another video on colors, but to be honest, I do not fully utilize the color wheel myself.... I tend to experiment with my color palette, I like contrasting colors, or layering of colors that blend well together ..... with ices dyes you want to put colors that blend well next to each other to avoid browns, or lay a color in between like with the liquid dyes in this video as for resists, not I have not used them much at this point, but I do have some ideas I want to explore when time permits so I am sure I will do a video as soon as I learn enough to share it ..... as for putting a logo into a tee like a ghost image, that sounds like Batik to me which I know just the basics, but have not really done it yet, just played around some .... but you use melted wax and either draw the design on with wax, or stamp it.... here is a link to some tools you can use (I have not bought any of these yet so I can not speak to which is best) ...... www.dharmatrading.com/tools/tools-for-batik.html .... also they have a lot of info on their site for free as well as book you can buy ... hoe this help and yes I will continue to make more videos as time allows

Peace, Love & Light, I am very happy to have found your tutorials. I remember being 16 yrs.old in the 60's ( oh those 60's) and making tie dye with tea bags, roots, and spices...life was grand lol. After so many washings...well you can imagine; which leads me to my 1st question. Do you use a fixative, or a chemical that keeps the colors from bleeding or fading? The shirts you wear are so vibrant and detailed. Thank you so very much for sharing such a Masterfully Artistic Skill.
@MrTieDye5 жыл бұрын
That sounds awesome!! thank you for sharing and yes, with the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, Soda Ash is what activates the dyes and then the dyes form a permanent bond with the cotton fibers of the tee ...... The soda ash can be added into the process before, during or after dyeing, and then it needs to sit for 24-48 hours at a temp of at least 70 degrees for the dyes to set up, but hotter is better, so I place mine in tubs with a lid and set them in the sun to 'bake' ...... oh and these dyes only work on natural fibers ... so cotton, rayon, silk, linen bamboo, and hemp will all dye up nicely with these dyes

Ive been searching high and low for info on laying colors. Thank you soo much!! Do you know of any videos or have any videos on dying colored shirts? Like, say i wanted to put dye on a purple shirt or green shirt? Will dyes stay their intended color or will they mix with the fabric color? Or would u strictly bleach what u wanted to dye first? Im so scared im going to ruin these shirts
@tereselapree2226 жыл бұрын
Cassidy Coll Your shirt color will affect how the dye looks so you will want to discharge the color in areas first. Each color of shirt will bleach a bit different. You don't get white areas on a red shirt or black shirt. Bleaching a black shirt often results in a rusty red color where bleach is applied. Be sure to not leave the bleach too long. And rinse the shirt well to stop the discharge process. You don't want holes in the shirt. There are videos out there that show a spraying bleach on a t, waiting a few minutes, then washing the shirt. Soak it in soda ash water, spin it, then apply dye. Some people use a spray bottle to spray color on for a galaxy shirt.
@MrTieDye6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Cassidy, glad to share my knowledge from my years of practice..... as for dyeing clothes that have color in them, yes I do it a lot..... but yes the color of the tee is going to affect the color of the dye laid down, so mostly I will add colors in the same tones of the shirt.... so if you have a light purple tee, you can add darker purple, blue, and even green depending on how light or dark the purple tee is..... I will add this to my list of videos to make ...... and yes bleaching is an option, but you do not know what color it will discharge to until you put the bleach on ..... and there is a whole process that goes along with bleaching and then stopping the bleach ....... when I do bleaching, it is just to get the patterning ... I will tie something up in a tie-dye pattern and then put bleach on... then sometimes I will add more color back in...... I have not ever bleach a whole tee just so I could tie-dye it.... hope this made sense and helps you

When you've made up your dyes in your bottles is there a time limit as to how long you can use them ? xx
@tereselapree2226 жыл бұрын
Janette Whittaker it depends on your dye type. If you use a kit like the Tulip brand where you just add water to the line and shake up to mix the dye, you have a hour or so for the most vibrant colors. Because the soda ash is mixed in the bottle with the dye in that situation, the dye ages quickly and completes its life. Using the procion dye, like Mr Tie Dye, he uses a soda ash water separate. Soaking the shirt for 20 minutes or so. Then wringing or spinning it out. The dye is mixed up with just water, and a urea ( a wetting agent) mixing that way your dye can sit on the shelf mixed up for a few weeks. ( I can't remember off the top of my head exactly how long. I'm sure Mr Tie Dye will chime in)
@dianaj15246 жыл бұрын
I’ve had dye mixed in bottles last all summer in a fridge in my basement. As long as it has no soda ash in it and kept cold it’s good for a long time. I’ve noticed yellow or colors with yellow in them are the first to go bad. I test my dye by dying a small piece of soda soaked fabric. I put it in the microwave in a plastic container loosely covered with a lid for 10-20 seconds. YOU MUST WATCH CLOSELY SO THE FABRIC DOES NOT CATCH ON FIRE! Once the fabric dries you can tell if the dye is still good. I also do this to test powered dye I’ve had for years to see if it’s still good. I just mix it with water and do swatch tests in the microwave.
@MrTieDye6 жыл бұрын
with the fiber reactive Procion dyes that I use, they have sat around for 3-4 weeks before they start to lose some of their vibrancy..... and yes as Diana stated, they will last longer if you keep them cold ...... but I do not have the space for a separate fridge for them, so on hot days I just cover my bottles with wet rags to help air condition them a bit .... also if they have sat for 3-4 weeks, I will 'refresh' them by adding another scoop of powder and blend again ....... and Terese explained well about the Tulip dyes in case that is what you are using
