I would just like to say thank you. Currently I'm trying to start off with a small business with friends and family with tie dye. I got around 15 orders for my start, i'm so disappointed with the results i got with a new fresh batch of shirts. I followed every steps and instructions i got from the internet but still failed, comparing to the results i got from the used shirts i used i got more positive results. I was starting to lose hope. I tried to look for answers what im doing wrong. Then i saw this vid. I will try again and change my methods. Tomorrow is a new day and full of opportunities. Again sir, thank you for giving this young one hope to try again. 😁🍻

You are welcome, I try to help where I can as this art can be tricky to get into ... so I try to provide answers to questions before they are asked. As for the fresh batch of tees... did you Pre wash them?? sometimes manufacturers will add coatings to the tees or fabric, this is an effort to make the tees stain resistant ... BUT, this can interfere with the dyeing process... so I start with a Hot Prewash on my tees... then a good soak in soda ash ... if the tees are not fully saturated with soda ash, then the dyes will not bond.... I have put a brand new tee in soda sh for 20 minutes, spun it out and then when I look closely, I could see dry patches on the tee where the soda ash did not penetrate ( I hold my tees up to a light and the dry spots will look darker) One other thing I share when I see new people is my Beginner's Playlist, it has many videos with helpful tips and tricks when getting started with tie-dye : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo ✌🏻💚🙏🥳🌈

Yes i know it can be tricky, but i really want to do this full time, i got addicted to the feeling i get when i open what i created. 😁, also yes i did pre-wash them before soaking the shirts with soda ash. I think the problem is i tend to forget that i have the shirts sitting there for maybe about 2-3 hrs. I will also try to up the ratio for the lighter color dyes. I will try to tag you on fb afterwards for the new batch i'm planning to make.

Awesome video. Just what a beginner like me needs ! A lot of channels like yours show all kinds of cool patterns and how to fold and apply dye . But not much technical information like you give in this video. Thanks !! I tye dyed a couple fluorescent yellow work/safety shirts as well as a couple solid grey ones . They came out AWESOME!! I haven’t seen any other videos on dying colored shirts ? The bright yellow reacted with sum colors. But the grey came pretty true , I used blues and purples and black on it . 👍😎

Carl you are an absolute star for sharing your wealth of information with us. I haven’t dipped my toe in yet as I like to find out the ins & outs for hours before making a mistake & it costing me money. For instance I was going to use bicarbonate of soda until you told us it has the opposite effect of sodium carbonate (I thought it was the U.K. alternative). I was also going to use cold water to mix my dye kit (there’s just basic info on the box) but I know that is wrong now. Thank you so much, I appreciate your time from across the pond 🇬🇧 🤩
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Addie.... you are welcome, I love this art and Like to help out where I can so other can have success with is as well .... as for bicarbonate of soda ... I am not sure what I said in a video, but I did not mean that it was the opposite .... it is not as strong as soda ash... Soda ash when mixed one cup to one gallon of water gets you a pH of around 10.6 - 11.00 which is ideal for dyeing with Procion Dyes.... the bicarbonate or baking soda does not get this high of a pH, so the colors would be lighter.... BUT, you can use bicarbonate to make soda ash by heating it in the oven ... I did a video of it, but I used a tin pan covered with foil and it should be done in a glass dish ... here is my soda ash video where I use three different sod ashes to compare, but then I lost track of which was which... but they all came out great : kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHWUfoZ4Zdh0j5o I used : soda ash from dharma soda ash for the pool supply store and soda ash I made by heating baking soda/sodium bicarbonate and here is a link to the info I used for the heating : www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/bakingsoda.shtml and if you happen to remember which video I said something about the sodium bicarb, please let me know so I can go make a note there as well

loving your vids and learning heaps from them! i realize i'm a little late to the party on this one but i thought i'd mention that i found adding salt to dyeing process helped quite a bit in terms of colour saturation (and retention) on a 24hr batching process. i used to add a salt water solution to the dye bath but these days i just add the salt to my soda ash pre-soak. seems to do pretty much the same thing -- though technically it's supposed to be better to add the salt while the dye is in the cloth -- and makes it simpler. totally unscientifically i use about as much salt as i do soda ash in the pre-soak solution. ymmv.

Thank you 🙏 and yes I have used salt in the past, but I mixed mine in with the dyes .... I will have to try adding it in with the soda sh and see what I get ... but thank you so much for adding more info 🙏✌🏻 ... I love this Tie-Dye Community!! ❤️

Can I ask what the salt does? Any particular salt? Plain table? Pink?
@teeeff5179
@teeeff5179 2 жыл бұрын
@@SummerRainbow777 basically i think it acts as a fixer. i think of it as giving the dyes more "bite". i've just used generic white salt from the grocery store, stuff with no iodine added. i seem to remember reading somewhere that you want to avoid iodized salt and going for kosher salt is (apparently) a decent way to do that.

The main thing with Procion Dyes is the shoes be made from cotton .... I pre wash the shoes in warm water and synthrapol ( some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap) by soaking them for a while, then I soak in soda ash for 20 minutes, then I use my washer to spin out the excess soda ash (set the spin cycle to half way through as some will spray water at the beginning of the cycle and this will dilute the soda ash) .... then when the shoes are barely damp, I use the fine needle tip bottles to apply the dye, here is a video to show my process : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nne6ZJJnja56o7M I hope this helps... have fun and I wish you success!!

100% Thanks being a newbie, there are, were some things it boils down to just feeling a little,shy,or Why be Shy about about asking the simplest of questions, I don't know but Am excited to hear You are back at teaching, because thats really what I need!? Can I ask how or who got you started on your road to fame and Doing some Really Amazing,Top Quality Stuff,if I am ever able to get ahold of a Original, I like to think I would hang it like the art it is,but Who am I kidding,No way I would just be able to look at your Tie-dye! Hi, I really enjoy your videos very informative. My question is how do you prevent halos and how do you encourage colors in the halos that you want. For example, I like the tans that express a blue halo, very pretty, but it doesn't always happen. The other color in question is Mushroom and Brazilnut, the Halo is very yellow, Is there another color I could add to it to tone down the yellow halo? I'd appreciate any guidance on the halos. Thank you!

Another thing to mention is to try to use your dye solution up within a week or so at most. I think I remember you saying that most colors may last up to 2 or 3 weeks except for greens. But to get the best color, I've read that you'll want to use the dye within 3 days of mixing it into solution.

Hi Carl thanks for sharing more wisdom, love the colours on your pieces . My partner and I have done some dyeing already with mixed results. We are trying to do some large pieces but cotton seams really thick. What GSM would you recommend for tapestry/wall hanging.
@MrTieDye

You are welcome, I am glad to be of help ... as for tapestries, I order most of my blanks from here : www.sunshinejoy.com/Tapestries-Hippie-Wall-Hangings/blank-white-tapestries-prepared-for-dyeing if I need really big tapestries, I have used flat sheets from Target online... I use the 300 thread count ones and they work great. But, I have also worked with tables clothes from dharma that were 7 oz. 100% cotton duck fabric... a little more difficult to work with, but they last a long time also .... so really it comes down to what you like to work with .... the thinner taps from sunshine joy are much easier to fold up and dye great

Im gonna use a tulip one step tie dye kit, has soap ash in it. And as its winter here, I dont have heater on. So if I left it for a few days in a plastic bag in a spot that'll get sun would that help batching process? Also love your videos! Very informative, helpful and relaxing to watch.

Yes I think it will.... when in a tub or bag and then set in the sun, the heat will build up in there and keep it warm ... and yes the longer batch time will help as well when the temp is lower ..... and I am glad you are finding my videos to be helpful 🙏✌🏻😉

Thanks for the great tutorials! I do have a question. You have mentioned in some of your other videos about pre washing the shirts and washing at the end of the dying and rinsing process. I know at the end, you suggest Synthrapol detergent or Blue Dawn Dish Soap. However, I am not sure what soap you use to Pre-Wash before the Acid Wash. Hope that makes sense.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
You are welcome, I am glad you are finding them helpful.... as for my pre wash, I use the same soap, in my case Synthrapol, to do my prewash.... I want to get out anything that may have been added by the manufacturer that might interfere with the dyeing process .... and I know some detergents have additives in them for smell or softness... these too might interfere, so I do not use them for the prewash .... BUT, once the tee is dyed and washed out and ready to wear.... then I use regular laundry detergent to do the general washing ... I hope this helps ;)

Thank you Mr Tie Dye. This is a great video! Once you have treated the shirts with soda ash, can they be left in storage, or do they need to be dyed ASAP?
@MrTieDye

Awesome video! So soak in soda ash, spin cycle and then dye? Do I have to get the shirt wet again after spinning it?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
thank you and yes, I soak in soda ash for 20 minutes to insure it is completely saturated, then squeeze out excess and then I use the spin cycle of my washer, sometimes you need to set it to halfway through the cycle as some washer spray water at the beginning of the cycle and this can dilute the soda ash .... then just tie and dye... I like my tees to be barely damp from the spin out... and if you are not going to tie right away, you can store them in a tub with a lid or a bag to keep them damp

Thank you Mr. Tie Dye! I recently dyed several different brands of shirts, all 100% cotton . I found that they produced different intensities of colour. Each shirt was pre-washed, soaked in soda ash, processed with the same Procion MX dye and batched for 48 hours. Afterwards, I rinsed them thoroughly in cold water, and gradually heated the water up to very hot and then washed them in hot water with Synthapol. Some were brilliant while others looked faded. Do you have any ideas why this would be? Thanks!
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
yes that is interesting ... I know each type fabric takes the dyes a little differently... like a tapestry or a tee shirt, but I did not realize there would be that noticeable difference in just tee shirts.... but that may help you lick the brand you want to work with

Thank you for your wonderful videos❤💛💚💙💜! I am just getting started tie dying with one of those kits from Wal-mart where the dyes come in little bottles that you just add water to. I soaked my t-shirt in the soda ash solution yesterday but I didn't get around to dying it and now it is all dried out. I threw away the solution because I didn't know you could re-use it.😢 I'm wondering: does my t-shirt has to be damp in order to tie die it?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
You are welcome .... and yes you can still tie-dye the tee, once it is soaked you are good... I put mine in a tub with a lid so they stay damp, but if it dried out, you can still dye it... sometimes the dye will want to roll off instead of soaking into a dry tee, but you can lightly spray it with soda ash and then the dye soaks in better... and yes the soda sh is good once mixed, I just keep using the same stuff and when it gets low, I mix more and add it in with the rest

Thank you so much. This is excellent information on how to make my tie dye colors more vibrant. Question - can you give any advice on selecting the color scheme for any given pattern. Where do you get inspiration for deciding on 2 colors vs 6+ colors and then the sequencing of what colors to put next to each other? I feel like I'm in a rut and always using similar color schemes. Any tips or inspiration would be appreciated.

I'm not mr tie dye, but you should look up some videos/websites about the color wheel, lots of good info out there
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
you are welcome ... as for color schemes, I kinda of just go for it, the inspirations come was I work.... but also, I love the rainbow, but there are so many ways to work with it... just the basic 6 colors, but hen so many shades of each color can be added in or switched out .... other times, I will see color schemes I like, it might be in tie-dye, but it could also be in a print ad or the new fall fashion .... I look for color combos all around me and when I see colors together that I like, I will make a note of it and try it on a tee.... they do not have to be the exact same colors as what you saw, just find close and go for it .... I am kind of relaxed about it as well and just go with the flow... as for which ones got next to each other, the color wheel, as suggested by spy see fan is a great place... it will show you which colors lay nicely next to each other ... and then the ones across the wheel from each other will mix to some shade of brown.... so like orange and purple, mixed will make brown... this is not a bad thing, but if you do not want brown, then be careful which ones you put together... also orange and green or yellow and purple .... BUT, that is not a hard a fast rule as I love to use Orange and Purple together ... I do not mind a little brown ... so with careful application of the dyes, you can put them next to each other with minimal mixing : kzbin.info/www/bejne/inLSanWdqdWNaLM .... the trick it to put the darker color down first (purple) let it spread, some as that is what liquid will do, spread to drier areas of the tee... once it has stopped, then put the orange (or other lighter color) on and leave some space to let it spread... then touch up the white areas with a little more orange I hope this helps have fun and I wish you success ✌🏻🙏💚🌈🤗🥳
