I just have a one-step tulip tie dye kit so I'm shortening the processing time. Hopefully that doesn't effect the outcome badly
@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
that is awesome, I am glad to be of help to you... Hopefully you had some great results!! But, just in case they were light in color, it could be from shortening the processing (Batching) time .... I leave mine for a minimum of 24 hours with a temp of 70F ... BUT, I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours with some heat added. As for the Tulip Kits, one other thing that will help improve the colors is to mix the dyes right before you use them as the soda ash is mixed in the dye powder, so the dyes are active as soon as water is added. Also, adding less water will make the colors a bit darker, and doing a soda ash soak even though it does not call for it will help your colors. Peace Love Light & Laughter to you ~ Carl MrTieDye

awesome... have fun... as for tips, I cover a lot in the video, but the main thing is to take your time twisting it up to get you pleats to lay next to each other and not stacked up, then they take a lot of dye, so after I dye the hoodie, I open the cracks and look for white spots and add more dye where needed

MrTieDye Hi, yes Madison Square Garden. It’s a pretty cool job. I can’t complain. I’ve gotten to listen and see pretty cool concerts on the clock lol. So, I ended up trying it out with a t-shirt first. It came out so nice. He really loved it. Thank you so much. Seriously, I just followed your instructions and it worked out. ❤️ I just did it yesterday. Do you soak the shirts in soda ash prior to? I didn’t with this because I have none on hand at the moment. But I’m wondering if I should with the hoodie.

thank you for the videos, I usually just watch, no sound, so I'm wondering about rinsing and how long the items should sit before pulling off the rubber bands and/or string TIA

I rinse mine in cold water to start to rinse away the soda ash and then I remove the bands and turn up to warm and continue to rinse until the water starts to run semi clear, then I toss in the washer, which I have filled half way with hot water and synthrapol soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap as it to is pH neutral) here is a video that shows my process : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8 and I batch my tees for a minimum of 24 hours at 70F, but I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours with some extra heat, I stack these tubs next to a heater vent, or set out in the sun : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM I hope this helps and you are welcome 🙏

Mr. Tie dye, can you make a rainbow pastel hoodie tie dye swirl? I’ve always wanted to make one myself but I’m unsure how. Thanks!!
@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
Are you wanting to place an order for one?? if so, then you can message me here: m.me/CarlMrTieDye Or if you are wanting to know how, then I would tie it up the same way as this one... and then for your colors... you just need to mix them very light to get the pastel.... if you already have dyes mixed up at full strength, then yo can mix your pastel dyes from them .... just fill a bottle about 3/4 full of water and add the rest with your dye, do this for each color ..... I do not have exact measurements for this, I just mix on the fly ... or if you are mixing the pastel colors directly from powders, I would use about 1/4 the amount of dye (once again, this is a starting point, not an exact, as I do not do pastels very often)

Have you done a heart on a hoodie? You make this look so easy. I have done several hoodies and you made this one look way easier than what I've been doing LOL my hands are very small so I find it hard to wrap them just like you said but I did find it easy for me to use a fork and the middle and you can keep the fork standing up and it holds your spiral. I made the mistake of flipping one inside out last night and I just rinsed it out it's in the washing machine but I don't think it's going to turn out right.

Have you ice dyed a hoodie? I will be doing hoodies for my first time this weekend. I generally enjoy ice dying t shrits, so was wondering how it may differ to ice dye hoodies.

yes I have done a couple with ice and they turned out great... I think with the thick fabric, hoodies were made to be ice dyed... so go for it.... I think a couple of them I flipped over and added a bit more dye to the bottom, but the one in the muck did not need flipping

@@MrTieDye music to my ears! Thanks! I enjoy the muck, so now I am even more stoked to try out my first set of hoodies. Do you know anything about the 50/50 cotton blend?

Thank you for your tutorials. They are so easy to follow. Do you ever dampen the garment before dying or is that not necessary? TY!

Sorry, just rewatched and saw your text in the video about it being spun and still damp :)

Is it better to tie dye when the item is wet or dry? I’m making tie dye hoodies for me and my boyfriend for our anniversary. 😊

I find it much easier to tie them while they are slightly damp ... have fun!!

Wow that's beautiful, so to tye dye a hoodie you start from the back?
@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
thank you and you can start front side up or down ... I put it down as it will give nicer pleats on the front of the hoodie ... but that is a personal choice

Awesome shirt man as always.! Questions: do you wet the shirts before? To achieve bolder and darker colors do you let them "marinate" longer? And do you rinse and then wash? First time "dyer" here

Thank you ... and yes, I do a presoak in soda ash with my cotton tees/hoodies and then I spin out the excess so the tee is just barely damp when I fold it and when I dye it... the soda sh is what activate the Procion Dyes I use. and then after I dye it, I place it in a tub with a lid to keep it wet while it batches... I leave mine to sit for 48 hours and I stack the tubs next to a heater vent so they get some heat while they batch... this does help make the colors darker or brighter ... a good minimum time is 24 hours at a minimum temp of 70F. ..... and I see you found my Beginner's Video, I have a playlist with several videos to help get you started : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

Loved the video. My question is, Do you have to keep the hoodie wet and how long doses the dye last. I heard the dye is only good for 45 minutes.
@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
After I dye the hoodie, I put it in a tub with a lid so it stays wet, if it dries out, then the dye stops bonding... so in a tub with a lid, or some people cover with plastic or put in a plastic bag. here is how I do mine : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM And, I use fiber reactive Procion dyes, after mixing with water, they are good for 2-3 weeks, and even longer if you store in a fridge.... but after the 2-3 weeks, they will still work, the just come out lighter.... so I write the date on my bottles when I mix the dye ... then at the 2-3 week mark, I will add another scoop of dye and blend again.... but I try to use up the dye this time round here is my Beginner's Playlist, it has many tie-dye tips and tricks in there : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

I pre washed the hoodie with Synthrapol soap and then I soaked the hoodie in soda ash for 20 minutes and then spun out the excess so the hoodie was barely damp when I twisted it

What dye would you recommend for a beginner
@MrTieDye3 ай бұрын
I use Procion Dyes and I would recommend them for beginners as well... they are easy to work with and you can start out with just a few and do some of your own color mixing... so if you are on a budget, I would start with Lemon Yellow, Fuchsia, and Turquoise as they are the primary colors... and I would get a black as well ... then as funds allow, you can buy more colors ... here is more info about tie-dye and where to buy the dyes in the US and a playlist to help get you started with using the dyes : Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye .... I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. (Procion Dyes work on other natural fibers as well like : Bamboo, Hemp, Linen, Rayon, and even silk, but I use a slightly different process for silk) I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore … I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process... Also, I have many videos on the basic folds and various ways of dyeing the cotton tees or tapestries ... Have fun exploring and I wish you success on your Tie-Dye Journey, Oh and I recommend taking photos of your work so you can look back and see how far you have come as this is an art that you will need to practice, but it pays off with getting better each time you do it ..... This art can be quite addictive, you have been warned lol 😉 Here is my Beginner's Playlist : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo ✌🏻❤️🌈🥳🙏 Here is a list with some more folds to try out : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2Bzupqjuh_6wdf-wMlgGdAjVaE Plus, there are many other tie-dye artists who share their techniques so others can learn, here is a list I have compiled that were mentioned in the tie-dye pages : kzbin.infochannels Most Dyers use Procion Dyes, so just in case you are looking for sources for those, here are the main places to buy them from in the US : CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/ CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/ MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/ MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com

Love it, did you wash in cold??
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
thank you and to start with, after it is done batching, I rinse in the sink, while it is still tied up, with cold water to rinse away the soda ash (the stuff that activates the dyes) ... then I rinse in warm water till the water runs mostly clear... then I wash three times in HOT water, the first time is a shirt cycle to remove most of the excess dyes, oh and I use Synthrapol soap to keep the dyes suspended in the water (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap) ... then I do two more HOT washes on long soak cycles, and I still use some Synthrapol soap, but not as much as the first wash as there is less of the excess dyes to deal with ... the longer soak cycles help encourage the rest of the un-bonded dyes to release and be washed away ... here is my process : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8

I like to dye stuff that is at least 80% cotton ... the hoodies I use are Hanes Ultimate Cotton hoodies and are 90/10 ... I buy mine wholesale from sanmar.com, but they can also be found on jiffyshirts.com and in the past, I bought direct from Hanes.com

You said the front spiral will look better than the back. Is that because it’s a thick hoodie or is that true for all shirts? I was told I need 100% cotton. I have lots of tie dye from Thailand Bali but it’s not %100 because it’s stretchy. How do they dye those types of garments? My friend told me she wanted to tie dye a hoodie and this is perfect. Thanks for your knowledge 🙏🏽
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
I think the front looks better because I put that side down when I twisted it, so the pleats line up nicely on the front ... and this hoodie is a Hanes Ultimate Cotton Hoodie, it is 90/10 cotton/poly ... and it dyed up great.... when I look for items, I prefer 100% cotton when I can find it, but I like to have at least 80% cotton for the best colors.... so many fabrics will have a little bit of spandex in them and this is fine .... once you get down to a 50/50 blend, then only half of the fiber are holding dye, so it then looks a bit muted or faded... but even this is not bad, some people prefer this look .... so if you find a blend on something, do not let the number hold you back from dyeing it...
