Carl, I'm a new subscriber here and have watched maybe a half dozen vids so far. You do incredible work, and I appreciate the time you take to explain and demonstrate your processes.Other vids are sometimes shot in speed mode and too hard for me to grasp the fine art of folding, etc. I'm new to tie dye at 67 YO and having fun with it. I've been stricken with stage 4 cancer for over 2 years now and find myself with a lot of idle time on my hands and this is a great way to occupy it and a type of therapy for me. It has also given my daughter and I quality time together. So thank you for that. I can imagine your classes are a big hit with the little people. So sending light, love, and peace back to you as well. Mark in Tacoma

I just wanted to tell you that my wife, who LOVES tie dye, was SO impressed with my first, ever tie dying, CUZ OF YOU! I decided to make her biz tees tie dye, I started with 3 or the 10 I bought and I followed all your steps. She was gasping when I revealed the final product after I rinsed them. So thanks so much for your step by step instruction. I'm looking forward to dying more of her shirts.

This video had so many good things to know. You answered some questions for me. Like Why Blue Dawn? Now I know...and it's a good thing to know. I'm a baby tie dyer and an old Deadhead. (50). I started tie dying recently while dealing with a health issue that keeps me lying down most of the time. I can do most of the work in stages when I am up. It's been the most therapeutic thing. It's has really made a huge difference in my life. Thank you for being one of my top teachers. Your instruction is allowing me to improve so fast that I'm really able to use my creativity to make things it would have taken so much longer to figure out on my own. I watched your Dark Side of the Moon video the other day and now I know about stitching. My mind was blown and now my brain is really buzzing with ideas. So all of this is just a really long way to sat Thanks so much for sharing your art and knowledge.

Thank you and you are welcome ... I love to help others with this art... 22 years ago when I started it was very secretive ... I wanted to change that, make it open to all who wanted to try it AND have success with it ... I am glad to hear it is helping you with life and with your creativity ... as for stitching... there is so much that you can do with it, here is an old album with a few projects in various states of completion to show a little more about Stitch Dyeing : facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4697029064004&type=3 ~ sorry about the order of the photos... @@MrTieDye Wow! That album is amazing! I can't wait to try it. I have done a bit of embroidery and I started learning to draw about a year ago. I try to draw everyday at least a little. So The stitching seems right up my ally. It will really great motivation to recover when I have surgery in a couple of weeks. In the mean time I'll just have to keep watching videos and planning future projects. Art is the best. 😁Sharing art is just magic.

This video was exactly what I was looking for. Having never tie dyed before I was looking for a one stop shop on how to get started and what supplies I would need and where to get them. The video quality is good and Mr Tie Dye is really engaging. I ended up making 70 memorial shirts for a celebration of life party, for an old Grateful Dead fan, and everyone loved them. Thanks Mr. Tie Dye, you're the best.

I do not have mixing charts, I kind of just do it as needed..... but half and half is a good place to start and then adjust as needed... most times I will mix into liquid and then mix the colors and then I can test a drop on white paper towel to see the shade ...... I did make a video where I tie-dye a rainbow spiral with just primary colors and do the mixing right on the tee... it will be up in a few days, just need to edit it

You are so welcome ... and in case it helps, here is more info : Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye .... I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. (Procion Dyes work on other natural fibers as well like : Bamboo, Hemp, Linen, Rayon, and even silk, but I use a slightly different process for silk) I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore …
 I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process... Also, I have many videos on the basic folds and various ways of dyeing the cotton tees or tapestries ... Have fun exploring and I wish you success on your Tie-Dye Journey, Oh and I recommend taking photos of your work so you can look back and see how far you have come as this is an art that you will need to practice, but it pays off with getting better each time you do it ..... This art can be quite addictive, you have been warned lol 😉 Here is my Beginner's Playlist : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo ✌🏻❤️🌈🥳🙏 Here is a list with some more folds to try out : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2Bzupqjuh_6wdf-wMlgGdAjVaE Plus, there are many other tie-dye artists who share their techniques so others can learn, here is a list I have compiled that were mentioned in the tie-dye pages : kzbin.infochannels Most Dyers use Procion Dyes, so just in case you are looking for sources for those, here are the main places to buy them from in the US : CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/ CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/ MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/ MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com

Thanks so much for posting this video! It was very informative and extremely helpful!! You touched on some points I didn't know about...for instance, being able to reuse the soda ash! I, unfortunately, have been soaking my t-shirts in my sink with soda ash and when done, allowing it to go down the drain. This will be a BIG help, so I won't be wasting soda ash anymore. Thanks so much!!

Wow... I understand everything, you explain perfectly. Thank you so much. I do have questions. 1. What can you do if u don't have the big basin with metal rack? Is there another way of letting the t-shirts stay for 48hrs? 2. What if u don't have the washing machine? Can I just wash with a basin after removing all the soda ash? 3. At that process of washing, do I need to use friction method or squeezing and kneading method and for how long do I need to wash? That's all. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us♥️

Wonderful and you are welcome. I used to just have a table set up with a sheet of plastic, twice the size of the table, so I could cover the table, lay the dyed tees on it and then use the rest of the plastic to cover the tie-dye... this will help keep the tees wet while they batch because if they tees dry out, then the dye stops the bonding process ... and some people will put their tees into plastic bags to batch them.... the one thing you want to be careful of is puddling under the tie-dye if you use too much dye.... so if you do not have a rack, then what I would do is lay the dyed tee on a clean dry rag or towel for a couple minutes and this will soak up some of the extra dye before you put it in the bag or on the table as for washing without a machine, I have done this a few times with just a couple tees.... it is a matter of rinsing in cold water while the tee is still tied to remove the soda ash since it is what activates the dyes .... and then I rinse in warm water and remove the ties... I squeeze and rinse until the water starts to run clear, then I will fill a basin with hot water and Synthrapol Soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap or Folex Carpet Clean as they are both pH neutral as well) and then I soak the tee and change the water as it cools down, I do this until the water stay fairly clear... but you can use less soap the more times you do this as there will be less dye that come out ... once all of the un bonded dyes come out, then you can rinse and dry. To make this washing process easier and decrease your chances of back staining, I recommend a longer batch time, I leave mine for 48 hours with heat added ..... by the end of the 48 hours, the dye is mostly exhausted, so there is less chance of it back staining, so your wash out is easier. I hope this helps ✌🏻🙏

I'm trying to learn before I get supplies for Christmas. Is this right? 1. Wash 100% Cotton tshirts (cold water?) and line dry? shirt of 100% cotton. 2. Soak in hot? soda ash at least 20 minutes. 3. Wring soda ash water out (save what's left) and leave damp. 4. Make design on shirt inside out? 5. Put dye on. 6. Put in plastic bag for 24 to 48 hours. Husband keeps it hot in here from wood stove. Does that matter according to time? 7. Rinse with cold until pretty much clear then with very hot. 8. Wash in washer with water cold or hot water? Add color catcher or synthrapol or blue dawn? 9. Line dry? Going to watch more of your videos. Thanks a bunch.

Yes, that is pretty good there ... The dyes I use are Procion Dyes and they work on natural fibers like cotton, rayon(rayon is more delicate when wet so be careful when tying and handling, hemp, linen, and bamboo ... 1. so yes I do a prewash in hot water to remove anything the factory might have added 2. I soda the tees or fabric in soda ash for 20 minute (it is normally at room temp, but it can be hot or cold as well... the soda sh is used just to provide the pH level needed to activate the Procion Dyes ... (I mix it with hot water so it dissolves faster) 3. I wring out the excess soda ash, you can squeeze it out with your hands, or some use a mop bucket wringer, the way I do it is wring out the excess with my hands so I can save it for next time, then I put the tees in my washer and use the spin cycle to 'spin' out the excess soda ash leaving the tees barely damp ... some washer will spray water during the first part of the spin cycle, this will dilute the soda ash, so if yours does this, set the cycle to half way, then spin out 4. I turn the tee inside out so I can find the seams easier if I need to center the tee ( centering or folding the tee in half by tucking one sleeve into the other sleeve, this separates the front from the back of the tee, so this gives better side to side saturation when doing some designs like the Spider design) 4a. I also turn the tees inside out as I use washable markers and I had a couple times where a mark did not wash out and wash not covered by dye, so if this happens the marks are on the inside of the tee 4b. Another reason to run tees inside out is the tiny spots that come from un dissolved dye particles, they can sit on the fabric and leave a darker spot of color, if this happens the spot will be on the inside of the tee 4c. So there are lots of reason to turn the tee inside out, but it is a personal choice, many others just work on the outside of the tee and do great work... I am just showing how I od it and I try to explain why I do it so you can make your own choice. 5. add the dye ... after the whole tee is dyes, then I check inside the creases using a cuticle pusher or something so I can peek inside and see if there is any white spots, if so, then I will add another coat of dye to that section or sometimes the whole side, I will add one more layer of each color 6. Time to Batch, which means set aside and let the dyes bond with the cotton fibers ... you can bag them, lay on a table and cover with plastic, or the way I do mine is to put them in a tub, on a rack so the excess dyes can drip away, and I put a lid on it so the tee stay damp while batching (if these dyes dry out, then the bonding stops) Here is how I do mine : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM .... I like these tubs as I can stack them and move them easily... during the summer, I set these out on the roof in the sun so they get some heat and in the winter time, I stack them near a heater vent so they get warm. These dyes set up or bond with the cotton fibers after being activated by the soda ash, then it is time or heat ... I use a combo of both .... but you can look up HWI (Hot Water Irrigation) where they apply powder dyes, they spray with hot water, I think 170F, and then they can wash pretty quickly... I have played with this process some, but I have not done a full video on it as other have ... I know there is a chart that shows if you batch at this temp, then you leave for this long ... I have seen it posted on the pages on FB so if you ask there, someone should post it .... BUT, the way I still do it is dye and then batch for 48 hours with heat added... just my choice ✌🏻 7. I rinse in the sink while the tee is still tied up, this is to rinse away the soda ash (the thing that activates these dyes, I want it gone before I more un bonded dyes start getting rinsed away... so I rinse in cold water for a minute or so) ... then I will remove the ties and turn the water up to warm and continue to rinse... the warmer water helps to release more of the unbonded dyes... so I keep rinsing until the water coming out of the tee is mostly clear. 8. Then I will toss the tee into the washer which I have filled half way with HOT water and Synthrapol Soap (some dyes use Blue Dawn Dish Soap as it to is pH neutral) the synthrapol helps to keep the dyes suspended in the water, this cuts down on the back staining that can happen in the washer .... and I use more in the first load than I do in the next two as there is more loose dye in the first washer load... I like to have just a bit of suds on top of the water (not a full on bubble bath though, just some suds). if there are none, then I will add a bit more Synthrapol soap (Synthrapol has been discontinued by Dharma, but they made a replacement that I have not used yet : (www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/dharma-professional-textile-detergent.html ) I rinse and wash 4 -15 tees, depending on the size, all together ... so once I drop a tee into the washer, I go rinse the next one... once they are all in the washer, I turn it on to fill the rest of the way, I add more soap if needed and then do a short wash on it. 8a. I do a total of 3-4 washes on the tees, the first wash is a short one... maybe 15-20 minutes the next two are LONG SOAK cycles... this helps or gives the dyes time to release and be washed away... and the hot water helps the un bonded dyes release as well, at the end of the 3rd cycle, I check the color of the water by spooning some up... if it looks clear then I will rinse ... but if the water still has color in it, then I will do one more long soak cycle .... sometimes when there looks to be a lot of dye in the second or third wash, I will turn the washer off and leave them to just soak for a while, once the water has cooled, then I turn it back on and continue .... there are many other ways to do this wash out, you can ask 10 other dyers and probably get 10 answers ... the main thing I trey to do is show what I do and explain why, then you can make your choices for how you do it... sometimes combining the parts from what I do and other to make your own process. 9. once they are washed and spun out, then I toss mine in the dryer, but I know other dyers who line dry... so pick what works best for you and have fun .... I hope this helps, I am also going to put one of my other explanations in the next reply as there are some good links ✌🏻💚🙏🥳🌈🤗

Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye .... I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore …

Hi. I came across your videos and thus far they are the most informative (and your shirts looks SUPER BRIGHT). You said to prewash your shirts before starting and I have a few questions about that: 1. What temperature? 2. Use detergent? 3. Air dry or is it ok to place then in the dryer? If so, at what setting? 4. Where can I get the tie dye brand "DERMA" that you use? 5. How do I take care (wash) them once I have finished making them? You likely have answered these questions in this (or other) video, and I apologize if you did. I just wanted to ask before I forgot.

I prewash my tees in hot water with Synthrapol Soap, it is a pH neutral textile soap I bought from Dharma .... but many dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral.... plus there are no additives like scents that may interfere with the dyeing process .... and then yes you can dry them in the dryer if you want, or you can just soak them in soda ash and then spin out the excess and you are ready to tie-dye them.... as for the Procion Dyes, I buy most of mine from Dharma, but here is a list of the dye houses in the US to buy them from : CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/ CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/ MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/ MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com after they are dyed, I batch them for 48 hours to let the dyes bond with the cotton fibers and then I do my wash out with Synthrapol soap again, here is a video of how I do it : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8 ... for me, I like to wash my tees a minimum of three times in hot water as this helps to loosen the unbounded dyes ... first one is quick, then next too are long soak cycles one more thing just in case you did not see it, here is my Beginner's Playlist :kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

Thank you for all of your tie dye videos. You are the best teacher I know for explaining how to tie dye. Lately I’ve had trouble with my tie dye bleeding after several washes. I pre soak with soda ash, let the product batch for 48 hours, rinse, then wash three times with synthropol. I’ve started adding color safe bleach. Most of the time it works, but some towels won’t stop bleeding. Do you have any suggestions?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 11 ай бұрын
Than k you and you are welcome... as for the towels that are still bleeding... they hold way more dye, so IMO, more soaking is needed to get all of the un-bonded dyes out of the towels... I would do a long HOT soak with some Synthrapol or Blue Dawn, or whatever you use for your wash outs... let it soak until the water is cold... then turn the washer on, spin out, then rinse cycle ... then test again to see if the dye still bleeds out

OR, you can message through my store and I will email you back, then you can send a photo ... there are links in here for both : launchlinks.io/u/MrTieDye but I have done the spider design a couple ways.... here I am dyeing the pies on one side and then solid on the other.... you can also dye with just two colors.... top one color and the bottom a different color... dye both of them solid or one other way I have done it... I dye the top and bottom with a lite blue, green, purple, or whatever color.... dye the whole tee .... then if I dyed it light blue, I will add a darker blue over it on the top and bottom of the tee

you are welcome... and if you are using Procion Dyes, you will need to use soda ash as it is what activates these dyes ;-)

Thank you for all your help I have dyed 3 small t shirts...and have a boo boo....I mixed the lady dye according to strict instructions...washed out the t shirts and soaked in the soad ash as per said....and then spun in machine....all came out ok in most parts but some places had spots of dye here and there not sure what I am doing wrong....front of the one looks so nice just did my own sort of turn but the back has got about 6 to 7 small dark spots

Ok so watched a good few of your videos now.....so I wonder if these dark spots on the t shirts are maybe not from leaving it in the plastic bag for 24 hours to cure or if it is from the dye particles ...I do mix in boiled water the dye .....and strain through a muslin cloth.....do you add fixative to your dye or after you have washed and rinsed....so now I am going to get a plastic container with lid and rack and cure like that and see if this is my problem..... of the spots all on the clothes or if it is the dye......also my dye is so light ...i think I must mix less water than what they say but not sure now...... thank you once again....

Yeah I would need to see the tee and the spots to try to help you, here is my launch links :launchlinks.io/u/MrTieDye ... in here there are links to either my IG or FB where you can send pics, or you can contact me through my store and from there I will answer back in email and then you can send me an image But, if you batched the tee in a bag and some of the dye settled in the bottom of the bag, that could be where your dark spots came from... you mentioned getting a rack and I think that will help.... or another possibility is to lay the tee on a clean dry towel for a couple minutes, this will allow some of the excess dyes to leach out into the towel, then when you bag it, the dye will not puddle in the bottom and when using Procion Dyes, the Soda ash that I pre soak my tees in is what activates the dyes and then time or heat or both will set the dyes ... but you do not have to soak first, just as long as the dye, cotton and soda ash are together before you batch, you are good, here is a video where I show the three processes with sod ash : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJzQcoSuhNpoaKM and just in case you did not see it, here is my Beginner's Playlist with many more videos :kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

Really enjoyed your instructional video. You explain things so that, as a beginner, I fully understand. Thank you for that. I do have a question. I have hard water, do think that would be an issue for my work?

Thank you and you are welcome... I used to do School Events and I think working with kids really helped me create these videos ... as for the hard water, I have not had to deal with that myself, but I know it does affect the dyes at some level, but I am not sure... I am not sure at what level of hardness the water affect the dyes.... for the dyes that have really hard water, they use distilled water to mix their dyes.... so maybe try mixing with tap water and doing a test to see if it works

you must break some eggs if you want to bake cake..... so I say just pick some colors and a design and go for it..... you can look through some of my playlist and see if a design stands out ...... also, you can look at some of the tie-dye pages on FB or where ever and just scroll through some pics and see what color combos you like and then do something similar 😉🙏✌🏻. have fun and I wish you success!!

You did a great job with the lesson. I learn so much, my brain is in over load. But that’s great for me. How long can you keep the dyes in the bottles?

Thank you ... as for the dyes, these are Procion Dyes and after they are mixed, I have had them around at room temp 65-70F here in Oregon) for a couple weeks and still got decent colors when I used them again ... BUT, if you have a mini fridge to store them in they will last for a couple months and still give decent colors ... Side Note .... some of the One Step Kits, there is dye and soda ash mixed together to avoid the pre soak, those dyes should be mixed right before you use them

Thank you for all your fantastic tips!!! I don't know how many of us would have made it through the pandemic without something to occupy our time!! For me, it was learning Tie Dye from the best out there!! YOU!! I do have one question... Lets say you mix your dyes in a gallon jug and then pour them into squeeze bottles. And I mix my Acid Wash in a plastic jug as well... How long will the Dyes and Acid Wash be good for? A few days??? A few weeks??? A few months???

I am glad to be of help to you ... I love this art and love to see others have success with it. Thank you and you are welcome!! 🙏 As for your questions, first let me make sure, are you using Procion Dyes? if so, when I mix mine up and pour into squeeze bottles, they still produce decent colors for 2-3 weeks just left sitting at room temp, which here in Oregon is 60-70F ... the same dyes last much longer if stored in a fridge... I have a small one and keep it at around 43F and I have used dyes that were mixed 2-3 months ago and still get decent colors... not as strong as freshly mixed dyes mind you, but still good color As for your other question about 'Acid Wash' ... do you mean Soda Ash?? like what I use?? Or are you using a different kind of dye and wash?? I do not know about 'Acid Wash' ... BUT Soda Ash which raises the pH level of the cotton and activates the Procion Dyes ... I mix up the soda ash and use it until it is gone... when it gets low, I just make more and add it in with the rest One key note here.... Soda Ash is what activates the Procion Dyes... so if you mix soda ash in with your dyes, then they must be used right away... that is how most of the One Step Kits are.... they add the soda sh in with the powder dyes in the bottles... so as soon as you add water, the dyes are active and must be used within a couple hours.... so if someone is using a Tie-Dye Kit, then I recommend tying all of the tees before mixing the dyes I hope this answered your questions.... if you need to clarify or ask more, it is best to start a new question rather than respond here .... ✌🏻🙏❤️🌈🥳
