You didn't see to much of Ken Hodge because, unknown to fans (even now), the Bruins were in negotiations with The Rangers for their young wingman, Rick Middleton. Cherry didn't want to take a chance Hodge would get hurt, screwing up the trade. There was a big turnover going on in Boston and many of the players would be gone or retired within a year or two.

The Soviets went 7-1 on the Super Series tour of 1976. The only loss was the Red Army losing to Philadelphia 4-1 after they pummeled them into submission. The Soviet wings won all 4 of their games

The Pre McNab, Middleton Bruins. Gilbert was better than Cheevers at this stage so it was good to see him in goal. Cherry's only mistake was going with Cheevers over him. Not that Gerry was done, Gilbert was just better.

+ranchy888 Orr was injured late in October 1975. His bad knee locked up when he simply walked across a parking lot to catch a team bus. Before that injury the Bruins had both Orr and Park.

Bobby Orr's last hurrah was really the 1976 Canada Cupp where he helped Canada beat the Czechoslovakia 2 games to 0 ..Bobby Orr was named tournament MVP...His teammates say Orr was in terrible pain and was in the locker room hours after everyone else getting ice on his knees. it's a shame.

The Savard for McNab trade was a good one, but I think Sinden's biggest steal was trading Hodge in the last year of his career for young Rick Middleton. I believe 'Nifty's' number is hanging from the rafters at the TD Garden today.

Don Cherry should have never been let go after the 78-79 season but he and Bruins general managers, Harry Sinden (who coach the 72 series vs the Soviets) were no longer on speaking terms so one had to go. Harry, who really was one of the games best GM’s, got a lot of shit from the fans for letting Grapes go. But Grapes knows Boston will always be his home.

I had heard that despite their barely being on speaking terms, Sinden had offered Cherry a contract in 1979 which would have made him the highest-paid coach in any of the "big four" sports, but Cherry turned it down because he hated Sinden's guts. Had Cherry remained head coach of the Boston Bruins through the eighties, the team would have won at least two, maybe three Stanley Cups.

To much rough stuff in the Canada game. Hockey is a manhood thing up in the cold frozen north. The Russians did not have to worry about money to pack the stands. They were very high tech. Now in 2016, Canada is the best in hockey, no doubt, but I would still love to see that old Russian team play them now.

CSKA Moscow in the 70s/80s used to be the best hockey team on the planet. Utmost respect to them. Guess there will never be a team like that again. They played 34 games against the NHL teams and won 26 of them. Flyers were just dirty arrogant pigs as most of the Canadians at that time. Even Bobby Hull came up with a strike against goony hockey. Until recently I used to dislike russian hockey and prefer Canadians (mainly because I'm Czech). But then I studied some materials, went thru newspapers day by day, watched many games and I had to change my point of view. Soviets were humble, hard working slaves of regime who strove to make a living. In comparison to them the players in Canada lived cosy cushion lives.

Put another way, has at that time the best 20 NHL players practiced and played together for a year or so they would have beat the Red Army team consistently.

Mark Thomas They wouldn't. However, they surely would be better off. But you knoiw, these are ifs that doesn't count. (If my parents gave me skates as a christmas present when I was 3 by the time I would have become a NHL score leader :D...) It was not like the star players were gathered in one team. More than that they become star players by playing together as a unit. That is why half of the NHL teams were better (in my opinion) than the Canada all-star team that played against USSR in the Summit Series.

dejffjed The best 20 NHL players who practiced for a year together would not beat the 70'/80's team? You must have missed the '72 series where team Canada (without the best players form the WHA, and only practiced for 1 week) did defeat this Russian team. This Soviet era was great, but there is a big difference in playing individual NHL teams (post expansion), and the best 20 that the NHL or Canada at the time had to offer if they practiced for a full year. (Like team USA did when they also defeated this Russia squad in the 80 Olympics).

bdriscoll11 Yes, this tournament took place in 1979. All best NHL players(who trained 2 month before event) vs Soviet team. Remember the result? I can remind you: (READ CAREFULLY) 0-6. This team was absolutely Canadian + 3 Swedes. All top Canadian professionals lost to second Soviet team(without Tretiak, Kharlamov, Yakushev, Maltsev...) in a " Series of the Century"( it's a Canadian name of this event) u know it like "Challenge Cup". I can remember some more, but this, I suppose, was most significant. NHL(Canadians)-0 USSR-6. How?

MrVasilenkoK Are you just making things up to best fit your argument? The 1979 Challenge cup was a 3 game exhibition to replace the NHL All-Star game that year. Trained for 2 months before the event? They were playing for their own NHL teams just a day or two before this exhibition started and had zero training together. And you can scream READ CAREFULLY, but the Challenge Cup was NOT 0-6 against the NHL team. The final was only 2-1 for the Soviets and Tretiak, Kharlomov, Yakushev, etc were all there (see roster noted on supplied link).
