"In the book Scar Tissue, Anthony Kiedis explains that this song is about his drug addiction. The "slide" is how far he will get back into his drug addiction, since he would stop doing drugs for a time, then get right back into it. 'I don't believe it's bad' is a reference to how he doesn't regret doing drugs." The "Otherside" is thought to mean The Afterlife as well. "Otherside refers to former band member Hillel Slovak, who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. Marley Lenderman wrote this song." 🖤

@marikka93474 жыл бұрын
As to imagery, it looks like the guy on the lines is playing a guitar or bass, in this case I think it is Flea, so a bass. It looks like the guitarist is playing some kind of line or rope (a different or opposite representation of a bass and guitar than many other bands would do [bass has many lines, but guitar has one]) and the drummer is playing a clock. The main character (not the singer) is dealing with a lot of things happening to him, whether those things are self-inflicted, outside induced or imagined, the person usually sees it as happening to them, not because of them. He gets thrown down, gets back up, pushed back down, rises above again and then everything seems to be conspiring to take him down again. I may be wrong, but the character seems to be playing out an external version of an internal process. Anthony is singing in a stark world and his voice is front and center in the mix, almost laying on top of the instrumentals rather than blending into it. This places emphasis on the lyrics and the delivery of them. It is very melancholy, direct and a bit lifeless (intentionally I think, not a criticism at least). I think it is another way to show/explain the feelings they grapple with while internally fighting against the addiction (themselves). Sometimes winning and sometimes losing, but in the end trying to get to the right side, wherever that may be at that moment.
