Definitely. My dad was a huge fan in the 80s and I grew up on her music. I'm always surprised more people aren't familiar with her. She's a master songwriter. "Baby Can I Hold You" and "At This Point in My Life" are my favorites -- they definitely hit me harder as an adult than they did when I was a kid.

@Alison Eldridge: I totally agree!! She’s is extremely talented and a wonderful, caring person! My good friend in college, oldest sister was Tracey’s roommate in college. They remained friends and she would tell about Tracey sitting on the bed and writing songs and asking her opinion! I always was like, let’s call her, but way too chicken and respectful. Lol!

I think you misunderstood the last verse. She's been wanting to get in his fast car and start a new life with him where they can support each other, but she soon realizes that he is exactly like her father. She's got the job that pays all of the bills. He's unemployed and spends all of his time in the bar. He's not concerned with making their lives better. He's mooching off of her. At the end she'd rather stay where she is because she explained at the beginning that this is exactly the same scenario her parents were in. Since she's got a job that pays the bills and he spends all of his time in the bar, she no longer wants to go anywhere with him. She wants him to take his fast car and get the hell out because he's a loser.

back in the early 90ies I was 6-9 years old and lived in central africa. This was before cd's. the only music I had access to was two cassette tapes I could play on our VW vans casette radio , One was Tracy Chapman. My dad let me sit in the van for hours flipping that casette everytime it reached the end of one side.... She will allways have a special place in my heart and allways trigger alot of memories from an amasing childhood abroad, that formed the very foundation of how I see the world today.

She has given up. Accepted her fate. She once thought she can "be someone." She realizes that she likely never will be. Her guy is kind of a bum. She feels that her dreams are dead. And at the very end, she tells him, "YOU've got to make a decision (not WE anymore). Leave tonight or live and die this way (and she expects to die this way.)" It's a grim but beautiful song.

No one should expect you to know what’s coming. This isn’t ‘Psychic Reacts To What He Already Knows Is Ahead’ videos!!! Now that I’ve got that off my chest, let’s talk about Tracy. Along with ‘Give Me One Reason’ (her biggest hit and a great tune), she did a fabulous duet with BB King performing his biggest hit ‘The Thrill Is Gone’. They are so laid back (like two chill pills just grooving the blues,). Check it out sometime. And, again, just keep being yourself. That’s why I subscribe! ❤️

While watching your reaction and more closely paying attention to the lyrics than I ever did before, I just noticed that early in the song, she says "we" ("Is it fast enough so WE can fly away? WE gotta make a decision..."). But later, in the fifth verse, when she talks about how he doesn't have a job, he stays out drinking at night, and is hardly ever home with his kids, she says "So take your fast car and keep on driving." After that, she doesn't say "we" anymore; she says "you" ("Is it fast enough so YOU can fly away? YOU gotta make a decision... "). So, I think this song begins when she's still in high school or maybe early college, and the song progresses in time (first she works at a convenience store, then she's a check-out girl in the market, then has a job that pays all the bills), and by the end of the song, she's no longer dreaming about making a better life with him ("I'd always hoped for better, thought maybe together you and me would find it"). Now, she's telling him that he should just leave, because those dreams are not going to come true. She's got her hands full making a living to pay the bills and take care of the kids, but he's not helping, so it would be better if he just left ("So take your fast car and keep on driving"). This song is so powerful and utterly heartbreaking.

She straight tells him "you spend more time with your friends than you do your kids... take your fast car and keep on drivin'." Dude ain't carrying his weight, she ain't got no more time for carrying him around.

Born to Fight is a great song about civil rights/equality by Tracy. She is one of many great artists to come out of Cleveland.

I saw and met Tracy Chapman in 2004. She’s down to earth. My fiancé and I were heading out to road-trip across country at that time and start a new life somewhere. This song brings memories but it’s also new every time i listen. It’s a song that can exist in time but also apply to new situations in life your feeling. That makes this song very special. I loved your reaction ♥️

She's an amazing singer and talented musician and songwriter. Now everyone is going to suggest that you react next to "Give Me One Reason" and you should react to it for sure but I suggest you check out "At This Point In My Life". It's an awesome song that really touches your heart.

You called it poetry, Mr. Video, and that is what it is. Amid all the great music back in the 70's, my friends and I listened to Tracy Chapman as a performing poet. She is special. It is worth to listen to her songs, like this one, with the lyrics at hand.
