The beauty of her story-telling is because she SHOWS and doesn't TELL. It''s easy to say "it's sad and we're stuck" but she paints the picture but never says those words. She uses real-life details that reveal another dimension --- working as a checker, saving money, living in a shelter, maybe YOU'LL get a job, we'll move to the suburbs, etc. And her remaining hope is all expressed in the title ---- if only she had a FAST CAR. Masterpiece songwriting.

Admit it, it was hard for you to hold back tears, right? Well if so, don't feel bad. I've watched about 30 reaction videos to this song in the past few months and haven't made it all the way through it once without crying at least a little bit. And not just because of what they song is about either, but because she's so great, and on top of it, she is the sweetest, most soft spoken, most gentle person you'll ever see. You should listen to her in an interview. She really is a wonderful, sweetheart of a person.

God, I love your reactions. So raw and real, and you really listen. This song is so subtle that most people miss the progression of the relationship. You can see it by the first two lines of each verse. You've got a fast car, I want a ticket to anywhere. You've got a fast car, I've got a plan to get us out of here. You've got a fast car, I've got a job that pays all our bills. Her partner is not growing in the relationship at all. All that they bring to the table is a fast car. Tracy has a plan to make their situation better and does it single-handedly until she has outgrown the relationship. Notice how at the end she says 'You've got a fast car, is it fast enough so you can fly away" where before she had said "is is fast enough so we can fly away".

Nice. Many more things could be said about this song, like the endless cycle where she (the protagonist of the song) and her "partner" are recreating her parents story (and maybe later, her kids will do the same too), or even the aspect of relationship in the society at the time/now? (the male brings the car, the woman brings the drive), but those details that you mention are essential to begin to understand this song from her personal point of view. It shows so much about her character (emotions, dreams, attitude toward life and others, etc) in such simple and subtle words. She is a great artist. Respect to her.

She is amazing. Like you said, you can feel that pain in her voice. True artist. And you mentioned how people, in general, don't care-so true. They can be callous and cruel. That's why one act of kindness can turn someone's day around. Each one of us has the opportunity to be that one act of kindness. Here's a sad but t true personal story. I have cancer in my bones in my spine. Before treatment I had become unstable on my feet. One very early morning I decided to go to breakfast. I fell... Only about 20 feet from the front door. Took me several minutes to get up. Not one single person stopped to ask if I was okay and no less than a dozen walked by me.

I love this song. Her voice her acoustic guitar and her story is told completely. Just awesome. The studio version has more ump with accompanying instruments especially the drums. If you like deep lyrics try some older Jackson Browne before the deluge
