You know, I've never made a KZbin comment before, but this was so valuable that I just wanted to say how much I appreciated and enjoyed this video Eric (alongside your other videos and work of course too). I found this to be one of the most informative and inspirational engineering/production videos I've found, and there's no engineering to be found within! :D Thank you so much indeed!

Love all your videos. This was great. I’m 56 and don’t drink either. You are right about how people can feel odd around you even though you really don’t care about what they do, but I’ve never regretted it, especially seeing so many others over the years create challenges for themselves. Weed destroyed my son’s motivation so again, more reinforcement that I’d rather rely on my body’s natural processes and healthy living. Thanks again for all the peeks into your craft and life.

I was listening to an older URM podcast you were featured on and you brought up "welcoming truth". It's a hard pill to swallow sometimes but it's absolutely necessary to be honest with musicians. Like you said in the podcast, you need to present your criticism in a positive way. I share these values and have gained so much more respect for you (as if my respect for you wasn't already maxed out) as a engineer and person. Thank you for all the thought provoking and humble content, it's a true God send.

A. Thank you so much for your extreme generosity in sharing your decades of experience making, mixing, and mastering records. You have such a gentle and passionate way about you that exudes positivity and facilitates learning. I am so inspired by your creativity, techniques, and tones, that I am reaffirmed in the importance of making art, for the subjectivity of it, is what makes it great. Everyone can feel all manor of emotion regarding the same piece of art, and that is it’s beauty. I actually feel justified in not liking a tone of yours, or put more accurately, liking the sound the idea of what I would do with a sound you start with (in mixing) given how confident and fulfilled you are when sharing deconstructions with us all. On behalf of everyone here, thank you again for the most benevolent gift of your time! B. I love and greatly appreciate the often overlooked truths you shared in this video. Thank you for taking the time to cover topics of the utmost importance in this specific video.

Oh Jesus, I’m just getting to the part about the dentist. From going 7 years without the dentist, to getting kidney stones trying to eat healthier. Time dilation, constant all-nighters. I wonder how pervasive these specific experiences are in the production community!

Eric I'm grateful for your art and wisdom here on the internet TV. I'm 31 and until the abortion of a year that is 2020 I haven't had anything resembling a regular sleep pattern in my entire adult life. I didn't even understand how wrong I was doing it. I implore you to read Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker - he's a neuroscientist at the forefront of sleep research. It's the most important book I've ever read. I read it with an open mind and am enjoying a massive upswing in every possible associated health benefit. The TL;DR version is that some of the things you spoke about sort of run against the grain of what we now know about sleep and best practices. He specifically advocates against biphasic sleep, but points out that we are bound by DNA to a night owl/early bird (or some variation thereof) circadian rhythm. There's plenty of informative interviews with Walker on YT - esp. the Joe Rogan one - which serve as a good entry point for someone hoping for answers, or a starting point to look for answers. I'd be keen to know what you think if you get your hands on the book!
@mrwev

Hey thanks for the comment!! I've listened to Mathew Walker's podcast with Joe and it definitely influenced my feelings about sleep. Mostly, in how much I value sleep for being healthy and productive. It's easy to be dismissive towards sleep and feeling that sleeping a lot is being "lazy". I've learned from Mathew to really value honor the importance of getting good sleep. I don't know if I will ever totally eliminate the biphasic sleep pattern. It doesn't happen every night for me but when it does, embracing it in a positive way has gotten the best results :)

Thank you so much, Eric. This was the episode I've been waiting for. A lot of engineers, producers, artists etc. have trouble talking about health and happiness without needing to put their guard up. For myself, I often feel less inclined to share my views on the subjects you discuss in the video with those that don't share a similar profession/lifestyle as me. It's very rare to see someone like yourself whom A) is a successful engineer/producer/music professional who DOESN'T use drugs, but for the right reasons, and B) doesn't have a sanctimonious view about your choice not to use them so as to hurl condescension at those that indulge, but also for the right reasons. I'm glad there are people like you in this world. Absolutely in love with the channel and thank you again for all you've done. Cheers :)

I can remember my buddy mixing my old band's first record on speed to meet the deadline, while I had recorded my guitars making sure to take a generous sip of whisky between every single take... Not much compared to the classic rockstar stories we hear. But still, drugs, alcohol and crazy hours were always there for most of the records I was involved in making. Even today, while I try to eat healthy, exercise every day and try to control my drinking, I can easily work on something for hours on end and forget there's a world outside of whatever I'm working on. Amazing episode, Eric. I love this! You should upload an audio version of this to podcast publishers!

Thank you Eric, absolutely useful discussion. I'm 48 and I have this sleeping issue. I wake up after about after 4-5 hours of sleep and sometimes I use to get up and read and do stuff but I never though of it as a "solution". I like your approach and I will look into this more closely, make it part of some normal routine if I can. Many other points of your video reflected on me. My relation with alcohol; I'm a happy drinker. I like sharing a good bottle of wine. I can drink and still being effective (to some point) and it even get me in a creative mood sometimes. But I don't necessarily think it's a good and healthy relationship. Lack of energy, memory loss, demotivation, hangover, are all negative effects that can be felt when I don't drink. Sleeping nights are not as much restful, exactly like you said. This usually pairs with less physical activities, and so on. Actually I think that to get to this "balance" thing that is the center thematic of your video, there is a lot of interrelation between the different aspects of your life, and one thing leads to another in a good or bad way. The first thing being to be able do something you love with your life, something rewarding and meaningful to you.

I also grew up not drinking or doing drugs when a lot of my friends were into those things. Never judged them but you could see they felt awkward when I was around. I really enjoyed this video. The alcohol story was definitely interesting, I am 9 years sober. I loved to drink a bottle of Jack every night, and snort narcotics. I had a child, and made a choice to go to detox. Weed once in a while, it really makes my guitar playing suck. Maybe a hit or two when I go play disc golf. Great video ! Something i've been trying lately to counteract the drawbacks of sitting down most of the day : i alternate between working in a sitting down position, and standing up position. There are such things as desks arranged for working in standing up positions, or even desks whom height can be adjusted, to move from one position to another. Without going this far, you can still get a couple of bottle crates or cardboard boxes, and just raise your keyboard/mouse (and your monitor if needed) to go to sitting down position to standing up position. During a 10-hour workday, i would change positions every 2 hours or so. Also, when you're standing up, if you're doing listening only and/or just looking at the screen, you can do some small workout, such as standing on one foot, raising your arms, or even do some yoga positions.

Very interesting stuff here Eric. I myself am plant based. I am 41 and also live in LA so there are lots of options here for me in terms of what to eat, but I try to stay away from anything processed. At one point I decided on a few things, I ate shitty food for the past 35 years and sitting in a chair for 10 hours a day eating garbage is not going to work for me anymore so I changed and it has been great. I also got into nutrition, and working out it, and joined a gym, its great, but you need to make yourself do it. I myself also have never done drugs consumed any time of alcoholic drinks. You need to stay on top of your game. Just thought I would share my experiences as well. Thanks again for talking!

Such an amazing episode, Eric! Thank you for being so transparent about how things led up to where you are now. I find that there are two things that really improved my life recently: exercising more and getting natural light into my home studio. I have a question for a future WTF video. When it comes to the quality of your work (recording, producing, mixing), do you feel like you get good at it by repetition, or were there specific moments when you finally understood something and "leveled up" in quality? I guess my question is basically about it being a learning curve or more like learning steps. Thanks for providing these amazing videos! Cheers from Brazil.

I once had an ear infection, and the doctor was trying to flush out my ear really vigorously. I'm lucky to still have my hearing! Really hurt. Also, I use Westone ear plugs that reduce the overall noise evenly. They don't look silly and stick out of your ear. I wear them to gigs. And keep them on my key chain. You never know when you'll need them.

I purchased brand new directly from Apple a MacBook Pro 16 inch 2019 model with a 2.4GHz 8-Core i9 processor and increased the RAM to 32GB. I found out the RAM is not user upgradeable so I went ahead and ordered that way. I also went with the slightly faster AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics card. It costs about $3500. The graphics card is not really needed for pro tools but I do a fair amount of 3D CAD work and thought it would be good for that. So far its been great. I was able to do that Taking Back Sunday mix and run OBS (capturing video) and run Quicktime to capture the output of pro tools. Not a single glitch or crash :)

Cool episode ! as a French dude, may I ask what do you call a "glass of wine" ? like a giant bowl of half a liter ?! because if you get drunk and loose memory with only one glass, well then I had to ask ;) And over here we have WAY smaller portion, of anything. Anyway you could always just sneak in a tiny glass ( shot glass) of wine here and there. I relate very to all you said, and I just do one glass a week, or tiny doses. I do half or just a small coffee here and there. Micro-dosing. not cut from it but all the small benefits. Actually applicable for all in life ( a tiny walk, 20mn of day light , nutrition = a little of everything. all massive benefits for little investments no trade-off of digressing too much out of your path). keep it up ! thanks for the episode.

I'm sure it varies a bit but its typically around 6oz or 175ml. Its not a lot and man I really feel it. Get all spiny and silly haha!

@@mrwev ahah I'm the same nowadays. small glass indeed, well then you are a guest we can treat with the best Bordeaux we have in the cave ;) whenever your are in the French Alps. Thanks for that vid, moderation sounds dumb but it's a good drug, fuels life without side effects ( except tipsy Eric with the second glass). cheers !

This is regarding sleep and also Grace‘s sensitivity to lighting: there is a significant difference between „modern“ LED bulbs and incandescent bulbs(which are largely off the market but can still be found online). LED bulbs emit lots of blue light, which inhibitits melatonin(sleep hormone) production. Incandescent bulbs emit far less blue light, though they are less energy efficient. Since changing to incandescent bulbs me and my girlfriend fall asleep quicker in the evening, and earlier. We now go to bed at 10 pm instead of 12 or 1. I can highly recommend trying to replace the bulbs in yours houses with incandescent bulbs, it’s much easier on the eyes and just feels less jarring. All the best to everyone!

Grace is right in sync with ya on this one. She has already stocked up on incandescent bulbs while they are still on line. LED light drives her INSANE. She really can't be in the room with them. interestingly, she is still on the vampire rhythm and typically stays up late to get her "me time". I am the opposite... I fall asleep instantly early in the evening I don't feel like light or sounds or anything could ever stop me haha!

Hi Eric, Great episode, thanks for sharing this with us so openly, truly inspirational for the troglodytes among us barely seeing daylight... You notably speak in this episode about the construction of your studio in Topanga and another studio project you are currently working on. If appropriate, I was wondering if you could share with us, in a coming episode your decision to sell Barefoot (posted on your Instagram). This must have been a tough move for you given all the history, but would really be great to better understand the rationale behind the decision and what brought you to this. Would also be interested to understand your vision for the future of recording/production facilities and what to pay attention to when conceiving those in 2020. Keep up the great work :)

I plan on talking about the studio transition when it's appropriate. I can't do that while the various deals involved are still in the works :)

The bit on sleep was really relavent for me. I've been going thru similar stuff and taking a 4 hour nap getting up and doing a few things then going back to sleep I feel a lot better the next day. I think you might have a different and hopefully closer experience to what you were originally looking for on lsd compared to mushrooms. Mushrooms is more of a feel good trip, where lsd is more of a cerebral experience.

interesting talk, eric! thanks a lot. on the topic of mushrooms: have you tried taking 5 dried grams in silent darkness, as was recommended by the great terrence mckenna? in his opinion it is the point where the mushroom really shows his true face ;)

Great episode! Is that article with the spider on acid (never thought I’d say that in a serious context) available online? Also, “bored with psilocybin” is probably the most preposterous statement I’ve ever heard. Up the dosage and I promise you that boredom will simply not be in the cards. Listen to Sam Harris’ trip report here on YT titled Sam’s mushroom trip.

I just did the search and there is quite a few articles floating around about drugging spiders. This one is Vice looks good. www.vice.com/en_us/article/4wbban/have-scientists-learned-anything-from-giving-drugs-to-spiders-1029. I couldn't find the exact one from the Time Life Science series that I read as a kid. You can see it in this stack of books that's being sold. Its the yellow called "Animal Behavior". www.etsy.com/listing/800301213/vintage-life-nature-library-books?gpla=1&gao=1&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInpXlndOV6wIVO-aGCh0PhQLOEAQYBiABEgLOxPD_BwE Who knows... I may give mushrooms another spin at some point :)

If it wasn't for tobacco, alcohol and music gear, I'd be dead or in the asylum. Then again, I haven't made anything noteworthy like you have. Not in music, not in my profession. You haven't missed out on any shit by not drinking or doing drugs. Keep on doing what you do and keep on doing it for your own reasons. Thank you so much for sharing so openly everything which has made you you. And put tip jar links in your video descriptions. I'll pass on a dollar or three for every video you make from now on. Enough rambling from me. Thank you :)
