I dig through all of the mix settings for the drums on another beautiful Greg Holden song called "Save Yourself".

One of the brilliant things for me about this particular "Making Records..." is the concept "this is a great drum recording, that's how drums sound, but this is what I did to get them to the final mix". I don't think this should go un-appreciated. I've been worrying for years, "my drum recordings are fine into the box, but I feel like there's a lot of work to be done to get them 'finished'. What am I doing wrong?". I also find myself thinking, "are my clients thinking, 'this guy doesn't know how to record drums properly and has to "fix" them with plugins'. This video has really helped adjust my perspective in a very positive way, so thanks for making it available, Eric!

@@DUwins Great advice but with a leviathan of a problem lurking beneath it. And its why I'm still a journeyman producer/mixer after... 20 years. Yeah, you can do what you want to make it sound the way you want, but you can do things to individual elements, tracks, whatever, and those changes can cause serious problems elsewhere. You can basically be creating problems for yourself. And later, when Leviathan swallows your ship whole, you may not even know that you created that leviathan as the ships timbers snap around you. Honestly, I'm a little trigger shy by this point. I see pro mixers and their MASSIVE eq boosts and it makes me sweat. I've become so conservative now. Like I'm afraid to touch the audio, like I want to do as little to it as possible. I try to get what I want on the way in, and from there, I do subtle nudging, gently shading. But my stuff is weak now. I don't know. It's easy advice to give, but difficult to put into practice when the complications of doing what you want to hear what you want destroy your ability to make other elements sound like you want them to sound, and destroy your ability to make the totality of everything sound like the totality of what you want it to sound like. That's my hard earned 2 cents.

Hey All! I found out that Greg did an "Into The Lair" episode with Dave Pensado that talks in detail about their drum recording approach. It is a great way to get more detail on how the drums were originally captured. Check it out! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ranblqOnftyjeJI

I still come back to these videos ALL the time! Something I would seriously pay good money for is a full stream of you mixing a song (or even just drums) live and talking through your decisions. It's already great to see the end result, but seeing the failed experiments involved and listening along to know how far to push things would be amazing. Hope you're well, all the best!

I feel like I need to comment twice... 1. How the ever livin’ hell could ANYONE could dislike this video? 2. This is the best channel I’ve ever seen for what I’ve been wanting to learn! A lot of what I was hoping for was a way to find answers to questions that would save me weeks and weeks of time... like which saturation plug in to use or not use.... or wether or not A/D and D/A would cause degradation in the fidelity.... and many more questions I’d been driving myself crazy with have been answered since finding this channel! Not because it’s the “right” or “wrong” way to do something... but because it’s the “vibe” I’m going for with my kind of production. Thank you, Eric!

I bought the eponymous T-Ride new in the record store a long time ago and I've been a huge fan ever since. There was an article from the early 90s where it was mentioned that the big music producers were upset because you produced T-Ride yourselves, and they said something to the effect of "Who is this Valentine kid, and where did he learn to get sounds like that?!". I actually saw T-Ride live in a small club in Buffalo way back, and spoke to Jeff Tyson after the show. He was really cool chatting about guitars and such. These videos are fantastic for me; I see your scientific deconstruction of sound as being spot-on. Many musicians go on and on about certain gear and sounds, but have no idea what's really happening to make them sound that way. Distortion on drums = genius!!

Lot of respect for how meticulous Eric will go with automation/gating/phase-shifting to achieve what he needs from a human performance. I think many others might be quick to simply mute a track or 3 (perhaps deeming some unusable due to bleed) and then reach for some faux-hawk samples. I believe this is why EV continues to shine above the rest and create organic yet 'modern' sounding mixes. I'm particularly inspired by his use of saturation - works nicely on these mid tempo tunes where there is space for embellished tails.

I went through this videon in detail on a drum recording a friend of mine did for me. Very rewarding! Q: I would love to see a video where you do a "mix rescue" - mixing drums that are not that perfectly recorded for example. I never have the opportunity to record with the best mics, consoles etc so a common mixing situation for me always means trying to get a good sound from a not so good recording. Would love to see how you work in a situation like that Eric. Thank you a million once again for your videos!
