MS Extra Stage Theme: Alice in Wonderland

This is the Extra Stage theme from Touhou 5: Mystic Square
I wrote a bloody long story called Alice's Adventures in Gensokyo and it doesn't fit in the description box. I am sad now TT__TT

honestly, much of Alice's entire character is one of the few main plot holes when considering the fact that technecally, the PC98 era is indeed canon (and hinted to quite often in print works) of course, as with what ZUN said, in the case of a contradiction, the info that came out later in correct

Well, Gensokyo IS a wonderland to people like Sanae who come from the Outside... I've been thinking: Yuyuko almost never speaks directly, and she has a thing for her tea. She also tried to bring poisoned sake to the feast in Yukari's story of Immaterial and Missing Power(Mad Hatter's drug-laced tea). All she needs is a hat and she's a perfect fit.

Well... definitely Suika is the Mad Hatter (actually the Mad Oni), because Suika is crazy about sake and parties (of sake), while Yuyuko is more hidden and Eirin is more intelligent.

It's mostly symbolic. Alice is a pupetter. Like an artist with characters. You get the idea. Lot of people think the projection of ZUN is Rinnosuke Morichika, but I think it's actually Alice. The other theory is her book, is actually the memories of ZUN about the PC-98 Era. The book is always sealed and taken personally by Alice. It is so important that she is always taking it. Think about it, it's like you kept your memories close to you but never open it. Others hints like during PCB, Alice being friendly with Reimu but Reimu could not remember. Alice, is by definion, bizarre. She is the best symbol of fantasy too, with "Alice in Wonderland", so it's quite important. Team Shanghai Alice. Team first, characters second, and the artist last. Hoewever the word "Team" is first, so we can assumre ZUN see his characters as partners of his own team. It's not just puppets or characters anymore, but something "true" to him. There is a fantastic essay wrote about the first CD too : "Behind the Murders of Pseudo Paradise - An analysis on the story and the different versions of Dolls in Pseudo Paradise, by kaljapullonhenki."

ZUN has previously said in interviews that his favorite character and the one that holds a special place in his heart is Reimu. I never knew the reason why it's called "Team Shanghai Alice" but he has mentioned that one of the most enigmatic characters in Touhou Project is Alice.

It's hard for me to revisit these uploads because teenage me already left his mark in the comments and I can't help but burn the Library of Cringe that I've built up over my years online, but by some miracle he didn't touch this one, so it's time for adult me to gush a little about this track. I have quite a few favorite ZUN tracks from this era, but this one will quite literally never be beaten by any arrangement ever. Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly has gotten some arranges that are so magical they make me cry, and that's my favorite ZUN song. But this one has such a *specific* vibe that will never be beaten by anything other than its original form. This song takes everything I love about PC-98 FM sound and cooks a masterful dish with it. I don't envy the task of any arranger of this theme thinking about even coming close to living up to the original. A more impossible task I've never seen.

Anyway, your love for this is apparent, and it means a lot that you shared it, and I agree with you. It's hard to remix this track because of just how emotional it is. It's nostalgic and almost mournful, yet it stays upbeat and it's notes are never gentle. It's raw and unforgiving with no stops. Some sad songs quietly cry at moments, but this one sobs the entire time. It's powerful, and it's hard to capture that.

Now that I think about it, if Gensokyo is simply a dream in Alice (Or Reimu's) imagination, that would explain the change between PC-98 and Windows, since the characters growing older would explain the setting becoming more mature, the story getting more complex, and the music and colors increasing in quality.

You could basically say that about any story. Due to the many crazy things that happen in fiction, you could say that it's all a dream and everyone would be none the wiser. In fact, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Alice in Wonderland fully run with this concept. So who's to say this isn't true when applied to other wacky video games or movies.

i think ZUN has big theme on the world he had created. Zun really likes the old times, the classic. Gensokyo is based on feudal Japan, which consist of forgotten gods and ancient culture. He reference old literature like Agatha Christie and this song Alice in Wonderland. I dont know. I kinda see him as a romanticist.

Years later, but my experience with this theme is: Bruh, this theme is mystical, even if it's the first time you hear it, you feel like you have heard it before, giving a weird feelings of nostalgia... When i first heard this theme i was like: Where have i listened this before? I was thinking about how the characters in retro era mostly never made it to the windows era, most of the danmaku in retro era is insanely hard and fast speed, i guess most of the villains were banned or sealed from gensokyo cause they intended to break the rules of danmaku, like Junko did.

Yeah, Touhou 4's extra stage is just brutal, and i guess i know why. The music was solid, but It's like the game was pushing me to my limit like some kind of Dragon Ball anime. I died on the white orb midboss anyway

Wait a minute. This song is emotional. This theme plays in Mystic Square. The last stage is the Mai Place wich we also can see in UFO is in Mystic Square. Maybe the PC-98 era was a time long before the Windows. Byakuren should have been in Makai in MS, but she wasn't. Maybe PC-98 takes place before she got sent there? Reimu and all the other characters from PC-98 are just ancestors to the windows characters. Those aren't really their names either. Maybe PC-98 is being told to us in a different point of view. So the names were made up to represent the ones in Windows. Does that make sense?
