Car Camping Tent Setup. Last year I showed you our DIY Camper Van setup. This year we added an SUV Car Tent, that we purchased with money we received as a Christmas gift from a relative! Watch me unbox it and set it up for the first time. Camping is a budget friendly family activity that we've just started getting in to. I love your set up 😊 and that your getting your kids outdoors camping 😉 My mom took 5 of us camping by herself and we kind of had a similar setup back then that you do now lol!! I was 2 when I first went camping with my mom for the first time and although I don't remember....the photos are priceless 😊 My mom took me/us camping every single summer for the entire summer throughout our entire childhood even into our mid to late teens. Then we took our kids when we became parents and loved every moment just as I'm sure my mom did 😉 We had a station wagon that pulled a large pop up camper. The camper had an attached awning with a screen room, then my mom had 2 large canvas tents that she would attach to the screen room, then she would somehow attach all of it making one giant tent house.😄 It was awesome!!! I lost my mom this year and can honestly say that those memories she gave us are still the best ones I have to this day 😅 Now that my kids are grown I am getting ready to go on a 3 month ( or longer) National Park tour 😊 in a 1978 22 foot Chevy Class C. I had bought it almost 3 yrs ago and it's taken me this long to demo it and rebuild it. Now its almost finished so I'm heading out Jan 1st 2019 and taking my mom's ashes with me. She was supposed to go with me on this epic adventure so now she will 💖 Have the best time with your babies even if your husband doesn't want to go???? Mine doesn't either lol!!! My husband hates camping but I love it and would never not go because he didn't want to 😊 I can sense your a strong lady and can figure out how to take all your children camping together 😉 Take care and I'm wishing you and your babies many wonderful memories like I have. Just found your site. We camped in Scotland every summer, with the aid of wellies, macks, a clothes horse, a portable sink, and a loo! Then we graduated to a very ancient caravan, which needed a lot of renovation. Best wishes from Susan, wife of Edward in UK.

Great suv tent, I have the exact same one, my recommendation is definitely use a carpet in the tent or holes will soon appear, I hope you have great times with your family, I think this is a healthy family binding type of holiday...... All the best

I love this! We just got back from our camping weekend and it was miserably windy at night. We worried the entire tent was going to blow away. It sure would have been nice to have been hooked up to our van!!

We tent camp at least once every year. The adults only go the day after Thanksgiving regardless of how cold it is. And then we take the kids in the Fall or Spring. It's way too hot here in Mississippi to tent camp in the summer.

Love it! Camping is a way of life in Wisconsin but I have never seen a tent that attached to a vehicle like that. I use to take the girls tent camping when they were younger. I hope to get back into it.

How do you prevent the battery from dying while keeping the trunk gate open

Love camping. We took a our daughter the first time at 4months old. I don't think I would like the tent attached to the van great idea though. I would worry about the van battery and wind blowing it closed on my head. Especially if heavy rains come. The cots seem to be a good option instead of air mattresses in the tent. Air mattress always seem to end up with a leak.

Can you close the back hatch of the van if you want to or does it need to be open to keep the tent working properly?

So, if one has a Honda Odyssey (2003-5), how would you know how much energy you can use on all those plugs on the back third row? I'd hate to use up my car battery on the first night!! Also, do most single gals get AAA for flat tires, dead batteries, etc? And last, but not least, how do you keep bugs out of the van??.... looks like so many people keep the trunks open- wouldn't that use up battery and let in bugs? Thanks so much!!!

What I do to keep bugs out is get a queen size mosquito net for a bed as they are the least expensive. You get regular mosquito net n it is small and expensive. There is a ring on top do netting and I hook it over my rail. I haven’t used this one I just bought but my last van it worked great and I actually could have cut it in half but that Van only had 1 door. You can only use those plugs while engine is on. I don’t even know if they work when turned off. Oops just saw this is a year old sorry but you might not have made it out yet.

Why not just sleep in a tent, do you run your van for the air conditioning, does the hatch being open not run battery down?

Steven Nichols I was thinking the same. If I leave stuff open on my can my battery dies within an hour or 2.

The majority of cars/trucks/suvs especially newer ones suspends all power after about 10-15 mins of a door or trunk being open. The exhaust would go into the tent so I doubt any a/c is being used. This tent is practical if you prefer elevated camping and want to keep out rain/bugs plus offers a bit more sense of safety for wild animals.

This is awesome! We have the same minivan. Did you have any gaps? I would love to do this as well, but I'm in Texas and am worried about snakes, spiders and fire ants if there are any gaps! I love the idea and we could totally put an air conditioner on one of the windows in the summer! Hahaha 🤣

This is really not a good idea. You need to keep your tent and your car separate so that you can use the car for errands and the tent for leisure.

On most of them you can unhook them from the van very quickly and it closes like a regular tent until you get back and re hook it
