It’s a cleat! I hang heavy mirrors this way and it’s very secure. I’d not thought about a headboard. Great idea!

This is called a "French Cleat". Wonderful idea to use it for this. They are very strong.

It's called a french cleat .. woodworkers cover the shop walls with these .. they're used to hang all their tools securely while making the easily viewable and accessible.

Any suggestions to hang a headboard that is bowed from top to bottom? Basically the middle portion is not flush to the wall.

Hi Kelvin! You could just screw a couple of 1x4’s to the back of your headboard for “feet”! Just cut them the height you want the headboard and you’re in business!
