I got my motorcycle license in San Diego in 1990 or 91. It was different. If I remember, I studied from the state DMV book, took the written test, then drove on the DMV’s tiny bike for an examiner. Super easy. I don’t know what it’s like nowadays in California. It’s probably much like the video. My first bike: I bought a Honda Magna and drove it everywhere. I was careful, but I developed my own habits. Loved it! I mostly rode alone. Never did group rides. I rode solo to the Grand Canyon and up the coast to Cambria to visit my sister. Once I rode with my brother into Mexico. Mostly, I just commuted in San Diego traffic. The motorcycle solved the parking problem. I sold the motorcycle when I moved to Kansas in 96. Now, my 18 year old daughter and I are about to get our Kansas motorcycle licenses. I signed us both up for the Wichita MSF class in April. I expect she’ll do great. She already drives a manual transmission car, so clutch operation should not be difficult for her. I hope I can do OK. I will need to learn the best practices, and unlearn some of my self taught stuff. I haven’t ridden a motorcycle in over 20 years. Should be fun learning again. It will be special, learning to ride with my daughter.

I took the MSF class and enjoyed the interaction with other riders. Many were helpful and a few were too advanced to share tips with rhe new rider. Each course will have different levels of riders that actually help by watching in the difficult phases. My largest complaint is the instructor we were paired with. The gentleman was not a coach or a teacher, he was difficult to work with. That will immediately turn some folks off, but press on. The class activity at my course was also not helpful, instead we were instructed to take an online practice quiz with any information available in the same MSF teaching video (what his job was). My advice, do take the class, it has plenty of value. However, if it is apparent you will have difficulty with the trainer. Resign from the course as soon as possible and request a different class on another date. YOU are the customer and you are paying to learn skills needed to ride safely, and not putting up with up with abusive personalities with a drinking problem.

It was nice not to have to go to the DMV to take the final test. Unfortunately, we had three folks drop out by the third day. One poor gentleman panicked and grabbed the throttle mid turn, hit a curb, and flipped. Thank God he was wearing a helmet. He was fine aside from some scrapes and bruises. I took the class in chicago through a Harley dealership, 3 times. Sadly i was the only inexperienced rider there. First time they said i needed more clutch work and to reschedule taking it again from the beginning. Second time, again the only inexperienced rider. Gave me the same bike as before, said i need more clutch work and reschedule again. 3rd time i was finally not the only inexperienced rider. One experienced rider got the bike i had twice before and he was having the problems i was having with the clutch. Told him what they rold me. But i finished the class but failed the state test. Thankfully they didn't charge me for rescheduling the class. Turns our the bike i was using had a bad clutch. Giess they didn't want to slow down the others and just wanted to pump out more and more riders. (More money that way) i did take a msf class in Colorado. Those exercises stuck in my head and i breezed through the class. They even took extra time with those that needed a little extra help. Been riding 13 yrs on and off for 13 yrs now. Even if you fail to get your endorsement, its worth it. Even for experienced riders that dont have an endorsement. They teach you the right way and got the bad habits out of you.

I took the class in Indy it was one day in classroom and 2 on field. Can’t say I’d recommend it. We were in 100* weather. We rode 6 hours before lunch in full gear. We got 1, 5 minute break for water and rest room . Noon we took a lunch. Had asked for water an hour before lunch because of dehydration, was told it would too long to get water and had to continue dehydrated. After lunch I was so dehydrated my legs started cramping on the bike. I fell a couple times and failed the class. Wasted 300 dollars, got hurt, and felt like it was not only dangerous with the heat but a waste of my time. Seeing as I had to take off work to do it.

I always wanted to ride motorcycles, so I plan on buying one sometime this year, hopefully. I have no knowledge of how to ride a bike besides watching 20-plus KZbin videos of instructors teaching people. I'm not too worried about that because I'll have time to practice and practice. The MSF course is what scares me. I'm a person who likes to keep to myself and is afraid to mess up the basic stuff. Mainly, what worries me about the course is remembering what I was just shown to do and where. Personally, I'd like to see a map or an above-ground view of the course so I can learn which way to go. If possible, just for my comfort, I'd like to be the only person and not in a big group when taking this course.

Just bought all my riding gear and I'm getting ready to sign up for the MSF course. I've been watching videos for days and I'm still just as nervous as I was when I started. Terrified of dropping the bike since everyone says that's an automatic fail. Everyone makes the course sound and look so easy in these videos. =/

It's not as easy as it looks, The instructors that do the demo before the student's make it look easy but it's not. But with lot's of practice it should be no problem, I just found that out today, My very first time ever on a motorcycle. I AM A TOTAL NOOB. I failed because I couldn't get the clutch and shifting down to control the bike due to my lack of experience. I need lot's and lot's of practice. But I can say that NOT once did I ever drop the bike.

Man I'mma tell ya..... I've been riding now for 3yrs... A good friend of mine encouraged me to get a bike and he said I should definitely take the class. He use to be on me about the classes. So I bought my bike brand new 2017 Ninja 650 and he went and picked it for me. Long story short I let the bike sit for a month until I took my classes and they were DAMN worth it. I even to this day still watch KZbin videos about riding. I also had a friend who lost his life in a motorcycle accident due to his inexperience and lack of knowledge. And I use to tell him all the time to take the class and watch videos but he never did.

Hi! Great video! I live in Mexico and there aren’t any safety courses in the city I live in. I’m going to start teaching some new riders soon and was wondering how long does it usually take to go through the whole course (minus the classroom theory). Also, how much time do you give the students to practice each drill? Thanks a lot!

I've signed up and paid for the MSF course 4-5 times. I did complete a Saturday and the next day, I had a family emergency, so I missed the next day. Either I'm not meant to take the course of not ride a motorcycle lol. I still want to learn, however I have no money to try 1 more time. I will say that the one day I did go I had fun, I learned a lot and I got excited

I took the class at my local Harley. I had zero ride experience, and took the class to see if I wanted to get a motorcycle. I went with the Harley MSF because the classes are smaller and the bikes big enough for me. If I did the class at the local college I probably would have been on a Rebel 250 and miserable. It was a great experience and I am so glad I went with the Riding Academy. Been riding 4 years now and loving it. Thanks for sharing so I could relive the memories :)

But I don't feel the confidence I once had on slow turns I went and took my written test and passed so I have my permit. Then heard about this class and signed up immediately just to get the boost of confidence looking forward to taking the course.

I think part of why I want to ride is because it's a peice of him, he passed away but I know its something he enjoyed so, I've gotta try it. Thanks for posting this video, I like to know what to expect.

Nice bikes with crash bars. 👍🏻 Take the MSF beginner course, folks. You get great practice with someone else’s bike, so no worries if you drop it practicing slow figure 8s, etc. I had to take the MSF course to get my motorcycle endorsement, and I think every state should require it. Even if you just ride a scooter, this class will help a lot in keeping you safe.

Soooooo different from my experience in my country (The Netherlands). My very first lesson was with the instructor on the passenger seat, riding on the road, having to ride small circles on a parking lot which was on the roof of the supermarket in our neighborhood. So in my first lesson I also had to stop on a ramp and try to pull up again to get on the roof of the supermarket. And yes, the whole time the instructor was on the passenger seat.

We did some different things. No box. We did cone weave, tight cone weave, cornering, swerving, and quick stop. I do wish we would have did the obstacle though. We also did the tight left/right turn from a stop. I thought the class was very helpful. And DON'T drop the bike. It is an automatic FAIL. Thankfully no one in our class did. Best part, it waives the riding portion of the exam at the DMV in CA.

This is mandatory in Australia. If you don't pass a two day course, you can't get your lic. We do a knowledge test, off and on road test too. Then you have to test 2 more times to get a full unrestricted motorcycle lic over 3 years, depending on age and how long you have had a vehicle lic.

I regret signing up for MSF, wasted my $350. They don’t work with you to overcome initial fear of being on a motorcycle for the first time and we’re trying to rush. They sent me back and were asking for an additional $150 to reschedule. I deeply regret choosing them.
