A couple weeks ago I bought a Honda Rebel 300 so my girlfriend could learn to ride motorcycles, and today is her first day on the bike! I showed her all the bike's controls, taught her the basics of riding a motorcycle, and then she hopped on the Rebel and gave it a shot!
To teach her how to ride a motorcycle for the first time, we practiced walking with the bike to get a feel for it and then did some work on learning where the friction zone/engagement point of the clutch is. We were only out for about 40 minutes and she was already able to get the Rebel 300 rolling!
She's taken my Honda Grom around the parking lot in first gear a couple times before, but this was her first time learning to ride a full sized motorcycle, and I think she CRUSHED IT!! For a beginner rider I was super impressed with how quickly she learned, even while being intimidated her first time on a bike just like we all were when we first learned to ride!
This little Rebel 300 is honestly the PERFECT first motorcycle for her and I can't wait to watch her progress as we get to go out and practice more!
Check out her “Learning To Ride, Part 2” follow-up video here!- • Learning How To Ride M...

Is this the first time you have ridden a motorcycle ? I assume that you are very comfortable peddling a bicycle around . I am 71 but I used to own a motorcycle in my youth , this Rebel motorcycle has renewed my desire to get one so I am somewhat in the same boat as you !

Same here. Age 65 and just took my MSF course a couple of weeks back (20 days to be precise.) That was originally with the intention of getting licensed to ride a Vespa, but after learning the manual shifting, I'm now gunjy to consider a Honda Rebel as well. So I'll be building my skill set and confidence on the scooter and when I'm ready, I'll joing my Harley riding son with my own cruiser. At this point , Sonny Boy is riding with me. We do look the odd lot--a 1200 Sportster along a Vespa GTS 300. lol

Probably one of the best and most informative vids you’ve done. Nina seems very self aware and sharp thru the process. Get her to use two fingers only on the levers to instill a better sense of control. Hope to see you guys on the road one day.

Thanks man! Definitely plan on working up to just two fingers on the clutch, but it’s a bit hard for her to reach right now until we get some adjustable levers for her! Hopefully soon though 🤞🏻

I remember in my MSF course they told me I did good, but needed to use all 4 fingers to brake. They didn’t deduct any points but mentioned it. I said ok but never planned on changing it. It just made more sense to me to do it that way.

Nina all the feelings and emotions that you were going through were the same exact emotions that I’ve gone through so don’t let that hold you back. I’m still quite new to riding and get nervous every time I get on the bike and that’s a good thing because I think it keeps you alert. I’m looking forward to seeing day two of you learning to ride. If I may suggest which I’m sure you already know by now, please wear boots in case you drop the bike and it falls on you, you don’t want your feet to get smash/crunched. My first time on the bike just like what you did today, I came to a stop in the parking lot and forgot to put my feet down and down I went with the motorcycle on top of me and I was wearing tennis shoes. From that day forward every time I got on the bike to practice I always slipped my boots on. Good luck!

She’s doing great! I would get her used to the clutch and friction zone by just duck walking the bike around the parking lot, no brake or gas. I’ve taught many, many people to ride that way successfully. No need to rush anything, she will be riding in no time

Dude … you are a good instructor BUT what stuck out for me was how amazing you are with her and managing her feelings. There is a lot of machismo around bikes and I swear you are the first person that I ever saw that took a moment, explored the feelings of a new rider, made them ok to manifest and setting the noobs mind right before they start moving. I don’t know if you are but you will be an amazing dad. THIS is what I love the most about bikes … drivers make cars great, bikes hold up the rider not the other way around.

Hey thanks for making this video. I am 52 years old and went through the rider course last year. I was super excited about riding for the first time and loved the course. I watched 2 people crash the bike ( they were both ok) and it seemed to happen out of nowhere. And that was just in a parking lot going pretty slow. You’re right. A healthy amount of fear is a good thing.

Good for you. My wife is over 60 and she learned to ride on her Monkey. She was riding around the parking lot the first day. She passed her test on the first try she has a Rebel 500 now also. She actually likes the Rebel better because the seat height is lower than the Monkey. We wanted to get the same bike for her and me. That is why we got two 500s. It's perfect for her to learn on and still enough bike for me. Best of luck to you.

@@womanhoodisnotacostume7648 I highly recommend the Honda Rebel 500. Any less cc and in a month or so you’ll wish you had the 500. They make the 1100 too, but the tank is a bit wider, which pushes your legs out a bit, and for me, made my feet reach a bit too much for comfort.

hey nina- nobody thinks you’re stupid. i promise. everybody started like this (my first time on a motorcycle was 10x more catastrophic). asking questions and intentionally learning is infinitely better than rawdogging it. there’s a lot of different processes and variations when it comes to riding. also i’ll be honest, i don’t even know where neutral is half the time. i learned to ride on a motorcycle with a broken gear indicator and i couldn’t get it started for the life of me at time because i couldn’t find neutral. hope you’re enjoying riding ❤

I watched this video for the first time a couple months ago and just brought home my first bike yesterday(Honda Rebel 300). I had my dad drive it home from the dealership for me. This morning I rode it around my parking lot a few times. I started to get really disheartened by how many times I stalled, then I remembered this video. Rewatching it to soothe my confidence. Thank you so much for this video. The vibes are immaculate. I love how supportive and kind you are Burch, and how vulnerable and honest Nina is. Honestly I'm getting emotional watching you. This video is really helping me release some of that internal criticism and prep myself to get back out and keep practicing. Thank you both so much.

I’m so glad to see this video. I just got my license yesterday and I felt exactly the same way you did. I also wanted a nap and sushi and wine after 2 hours, except I couldn’t. I wish I had gotten on a motorcycle before so it would have been easier on me. It was mentally and emotionally exhausting. I got on a bike for the first time on Saturday and took the test on Sunday. The hardest thing: making a U turn (can’t put your foot down) and a sharp left on slow sleep, if you got that then you can do anything, in my opinion. Believe me girl, you will do great and I’m glad to see such a relatable video. Relax and enjoy the ride. At the end I was able to pass. I had great coach. And also my husband was graceful supporting me and encouraging me. When you get the gist of it you will feel so wonderful. I wish success and joy for you. My only advice, get out of your head if you stress, relax, believe in yourself, and turn your head, look at where you want to go.

BEST suggestion someone told me. Bike turned off. Put the bike into first gear. Pull the clutch in. Walk the bike. Slowly release it so you can feel the friction zone without worrying about the power of the engine taking over. It’s all about slow walking it just until you feel the clutch grabbing the transmission. You can have a ‘no engine power’ way to get an understanding of your friction zone. Simply the best advice I was given. I am a first time rider and I did this for hours. This made my clutch lever feel so seamless I hardly even think about my friction zone now. Best of luck with your bike and welcome to the the rider world!

A trick to remember the location of the gears is turn your hand downwards so that your thumb points to the floor with your palm fully open. Then, visualize your thumb as the first gear and higher gears upwards from there. Neural falls in the big gap between your thumb and the index finger.

I cannot thank you both enough for this video. I have watched a ton of “beginner how to” videos but most of them speak as if you already know stuff. I don’t. But to hear him actually speak and teach an actual person on a bike ( together with her POV ) it just felt like I, myself, am being taught firsthand. I love how she delved into the fear of the bike and him saying how most of that fear comes from people telling you how hard and dangerous riding is. I’ve been wanting to get a bike of my own but I’ve never driven one before at all. He was right to say that the internet needs these kinds of vids. I have learned more in this one vid than all the other ones. Not just motorcycle stuff but also the mental approach to it.

I love this! She’s still way ahead of me when I first started, and that was after I had taken the MSF course. She’ll be hitting the roads in no time. 🙂 I can’t wait to have her join us riding at the next meet up!

After riding on the back with my husband for 2 years, I want to learn to ride on my own! You two have the best videos to learn from. My hubby keeps lol because I’m asking the exact same things as KomotoVlogs and she reminds him of me. 😂 Makes me feel like I can’t fail now after watching these! Thanks

Hi, new subscriber Australia. I am just in the process of teaching my wife to ride, and your video is the very best I have seen when teaching. My wife has exactly the same fears as Nina. Great work, keep up the videos👍

This was a great video. I have always wanted to ride and everything she was saying is what I would be feeling too. I'm looking for MSF classes in my area to take. The comment about people saying how dangerous it is. I agree, and that has made me hesitate for a long time but no more. Thank you both!

Both of you were amazing! I just signed up to take a motorcycle riding course and plan to buy the exact bike you were just riding (ish) LOL I learned a lot from both of you. I've got 'butterflies' already and I can't wait to get on a bike. Thanks for that! LOL again!

Love this video. I’m wanting to get this same bike as my first and I’ve never ridden before. I am her size/height and totally feel the same way/fears. You’re a super encouraging and patient teacher. I’m hoping when I take my course, I have someone who is like this.

Another great video Mike! I'll be retiring in another couple years and plan to get my motorcycle instructor's license. This video makes me realize how much we riders take for granted. What seems so simple and obvious to us is a TOTALLY new learning experience for new riders. It's great to see them "get it" and move on to the next level! 👍🏍

It’s funny, my wife having hand control reach concerns on her Rebel 500 brought me to your channel when I watched you install those adjustable levers off of Amazon. Being able to adjust the clutch lever to have a natural reach totally made the learning experience better for both of us beginners.

thankyou for this video! It helped take out some of my fears as I am looking to get my first ever bike either a 300 or 500. I can drive a manual car no problem but the shifting for a bike scares me. It was so nice to see another 1st timer. Most videos don't show this and this is very helpful.

I found you late, as I recently committed to my desire to have a motorcycle. I bought a 2023 Rebel 1100T, and found you scanning YT around looking for more info. I've seen a bunch of your videos, but rarely subscribe (to anyone), this video convinced me to not only subscribe, but also donate to future videos! Your calm demeanor, and light heartedness, and especially when you were working through her fear - really resonated with me. Thank you for all your hard work on these videos! Keep making great content!

I just picked up a new (to me) bike a few weeks ago after not riding for several years. Was also a big step up in size/weight from my last bike and I was a little nervous about riding it for the first time. It's just part of getting on a bike for the first time that's significantly different than what you've ridden before. No two bikes are the same so you psych yourself up thinking "what if I can't handle THIS bike."
