@VilleVaananen26 күн бұрын
Because VR is a niche and developers are more interested in getting their games work on flatscreen. At least we get separate settings for playing on a monitor and on VR as well as having the option to switch from VR mode to flatscreen with a simple keyboard shortcut. I think MSFS is the only game that does these.

@VilleVaananen EXACTLY. I remember when I was a kid, and DBZ was at its peak. The PS1 was out, and all the cool stuff was from Japan. You needed so many teaks here and there to make it work in the US. Then, the market opened up, and the tech advanced to make it easily accessible. Kinda same with this. This hobby is very niche, and nich technology is not made to be accessible. Not on purpose, but the nature of the fabrication process and development. It'll be like this for a few more years unless you buy a PSVR or Meta, which ARE meant to reach a bigger market.

I started FS2024 for the first time 2 hours ago, expecting a long evening tweaking things to get it to run acceptably, and astonishingly I was able to have a great flight first attempt, changing nothing at all. This was using my Quest 3 via Virtual Desktopm and an I7 PC with 32GB RAM and a 4070 Super. I had no end of trouble with FS2020 and based on what others have been saying, I must be very lucky. I must say I am massively impressed with how much better the sim looks, especially the lighting and the improved UK scenery. @daviddahlstrom19227 күн бұрын
In my first few days with MSFS 2020, I was using DLSS on my Pimax Crystal and 13900K/4090RTX since it was the only way to get it to run smooth at the settings I was using. In 2020 I always used TAA, but in 2024 only briefly since my initial experience was pretty poor performance-wise. However, I was feeling like the graphical improvements in 2024 weren't much better than 2020, even when tweaking up the settings as far as I dared, and was starting to write off the sim as being rather underwhelming. However, over the weekend I decided to spend a few hours carefully tweaking and finding out the effect of each setting. What I discovered upon lowering a few settings (especially terrain and object lod, which I had maxed out), and returning to TAA was that the graphical improvement was way too dramatic to ignore. Not only was terrain sharper, but surprisingly, I found that new atmospheric effects just popped in a way that DLSS was dampening and seemed utterly realistic. I don't know exactly why DLSS does this, but it led me to drop DLSS entirely and do everything I could to optimize for TAA, which I'm glad to say I have been able to get running smoothly enough to be very happy with. I should add that as part of this optimization I turned off motion smoothing and reprojection since, even though artifacts seem well controlled, the sim just doesn't *feel* as smooth with these turned on as with them off.
@tyrjocke26 күн бұрын
What kind of settings are you running the sim? Whats overall your settings?
@daviddahlstrom19226 күн бұрын
@@tyrjocke I'm using TAA mode at 100 render scaling, which given my Crystal's PimaxPlay settings produces a resolution of 3512x4156. I started out with all settings on medium, but then boosted several to high including clouds, ambient occlusion, water waves, and contact shadows. Off screen pre-caching is on Ultra (I also increased the rolling cache to 64GB). Traffic settings are low for now. Anisotropic filtering is at 16x16 and texture super sampling at 8x8. Some of the more important settings, however, when it comes to smoothness as opposed to just fps are the following. At first, I had terrain and object lod maxed, but found that lowering them to 300 and 150 respectively made things smoother even though the fps remained similar. I may lower these more, but I'm pretty happy at these settings. The other important things were to turn off the Pimax motion smoothing and MSFS reprojection mode settings. I think these need more raw fps to work efficiently, and so were actually doing more harm than good. Finally, I found that running MSFS 2024 under SteamVR with the Steam OpenXR runtime produces a noticeably smoother experience than the Pimax OpenXR runtime.

Very disappointing that the frame rate performance in MSFS 2024 is not better than in 2020. I thought that by using the extra cores on the CPU, there should have great improvement but I am getting almost the same frame rates with my 13900K and RTX 4090. Maybe I’m missing something here.
@martyristau821226 күн бұрын
The better multi-threading only helps when you're CPU limited. In VR though every game in every scenario is pretty much alsways GPU-limited. So the only way to optimize VR performance is lowering settings that have an impact on the GPU.

@ I don’t agree with this. In VR, with a 4090, I was never limited by the GPU. The CPU was always at 100%, so I would think that the extra cores should have helped. But maybe there is something going on that I don’t understand. 🤔
@Thunderbird133711 күн бұрын
@@HeliSimDriver When you are that CPU limited, you have to reduce the traffic (vehicles/ planes/ airport traffic) and vegetation. The traffic is heavily consuming CPU power. I've asked on reddit and steam about head tracking and no one could solve this, so I'm going to try asking here: It's tricky to explain, but it's driving me nuts and ruining the sim for me. Everything in my center view overrides what I'm hovering over with the mouse/controller cursor. For example, if I'm adjusting throttle and then my center view moves onto another button, that other button gets clicked instead of the throttle which I was currently adjusting and which the mouse is still hovering over. Is this normal? It's weird because if I'm using VR with mouse/keyboard/controller I have the issue, but when using VR with VR controller I can continue to manipulate a specific knob even when my view leaves the panel. I'm at my wits end!!! (using PSVR 2)

I think you are using DLSS in your video because it's immens blurry at start. ;-) Thanks for the quick video. I'll be useing your wisdom in my VR after this video but we AMD GPU peesp don't have any DLSS.

Do I need to run DLSS Swapper every time I launch the sim? Or just once to do the swap?

Have you noticed that SteamVR thinks it is running FS2020? It makes me wonder if 2024 started its life as just an update to 2020 and they decided to spin it off into a new game.

Not a DLSS fan or not fan thing. Unfortunately you're late here because this sim is not.. I repeat NOT optimized for VR. And you can't use DLSS TWEAKS.. an amazing tool for 2020. Here we are experiencing another problem... Dlss quality is getting your resolution multiplied by 0.66.. the results are not there yet. That's why we need dlss tweaks at least to work so we can modify those values.. DLSS DLAA, the winner in 2020 is impossible to replicate in 2024... We need youtubers like you (I produce content for Spanish oriented audience) with the amount of subscribers to raise our voices and demand Asobo and Microsoft an investment putting people with knowledge to work, FIX VR and put what they need to put here. MBucchia, creator of openXR toolkit already said that.. VR is dead in 2024. "Overall from reading the above, it looks like we are now entering year 4 of “subpar VR in MSFS” and the gaming industry keep showing that it doesn’t care about PCVR"

Yes I know, that's why I'm using DLSS, because TAA is too hard on performance. Thanks for your comments!

People needs to stop "lie" to themselves and admit this game is not for VR.
@daviddahlstrom19227 күн бұрын
@@arride4590 Actually, if you have a 4090 and get it tweaked just right, it is visually quite superior to 2020, though right on the edge of acceptable performance, so lower tier cards and headsets just aren't going to be able to do it justice. So I wouldn't quite say that it is not for VR, but it is correct to say that it is absolutely not *optimized* for VR. In fact, just the glaringly obvious non-working toolbar and futzy mouse control that would have taken 5 minutes for any QA tester to find and put on the critical/don't ship-because-a-major-feature-is-seriously-broken list, is proof that VR is not regarded as an important feature. But at least it was included, even if it is now a legacy feature with the VR team disbanded (as widely reported on last year).
@primashock27 күн бұрын
@@daviddahlstrom192 no, it's not. I have a Ryzen 7800x3d, 64gb ddr5 at 6600mhz, TUF RTX 4090 OC and pimax Crystal Light. DLAA is impossible in 2024. If you are getting a good performance is because you are actually rendering the game at "low resolution". Do yourself a favor and enable dev mode. then debug > fps counter. Now tell me what is your render resolution and how many fps you are getting, of course. Now try to use the 100% resolution of the pimax crystal light *4286x5202 and tell me if you get a smooth and good performance in DLAA rendering at that resolution. In 2020 we were getting 40fps and a perfect visual experience with that config.
@primashock27 күн бұрын
@@arride4590 It is "working" in VR but the implementation is poor and the results are obvious. People don't understand how this game works and what are the render resolutions vs what DLSS does to that resolution. Directx12 feels in Beta still. I see tons of transparent mountains, glitches, bad tessellation... Not to mention the new features like animals that jump from one spot to another in one flashing moment and they look ugly and unreal// I don't care about this but if you're going to state like they said many times that this game was going to be amazing... it is far from that and we need to raise our voices. We are paying a lot of money. It's not just the $200 for the game.. we move the VR industry, getting state of the art equipment. If we need to get a 5090 to solve these issues we are being robbed./

@@Space_pirateDKK I almost never use DLSS in VR for that reason. Give it a try. It actually is a huge boost in smoothness and the decrease in clarity is very acceptable. At least until we have better options. (I'm on 4090 with 64GB ram with Quest 3, this is the best I can get it to run)

@@VRFlightSimGuy I'm happy with my 4090 performance once off the ground in VR. My surface level FPS isn't great to the point that I don't think the 5090 will truly make it smooth. I'm running Ultra EVERYTHING with no attempt to get buttery FPS. I'd rather have quality over smoothness.
