In today’s video I check out the latest OpenXR developer tool update which has improved motion reprojection for VR in Microsoft Flight Simulator and has left me totally blown away!

Here's a quick update about the latest OpenXR developer tool, which is runtime version 112.2209.2003. This is relevant to all HP Reverb G2 users and is available for download on the Windows Store.
I have been flying all weekend using motion reprojection enabled as seen on screen here and can honestly say they nailed it! Many of you know that I have long been a fan of disabling this tool due to various artefacts and other visual warping, but since this latest update I am finding minimal distractions.

Nice to see you finally convert to MR! I can't fly without it and haven't experienced any real distortions for several months. Staying above 30 fps is key. Excited to see you're getting 45 fps in places now. I imagine that once our PC's can run MR at 45 fps fixed, distortions will be virtually eliminated entirely and we'll have a 90 fps perceived visual experience without any concessions at all.

Even at 45fps reprojected to 90fps I still notice that the image appears blurrier overall, so there are still unfortunately some trade-offs. Running at 60fps with no MR with the Reverb G2 set to run at that refresh rate is a much clearer and smoother experience than running the headset at 90fps with MR locked at 45 (based on testing I did a couple days ago). I understand that not everyone has the hardware to pull off running at 60fps, even with DLSS, FSR, foveated rendering and all the tricks, but it's the best looking experience I've come across and it'll be cool when the hardware gets to the point where everyone can do it relatively affordably (which should only be a couple hardware generations away really at this point).

Do you still get this? Are you on nvidia? what nvidia driver version and main settings do you go for? Are you using toolkit to lock fps or nvidia control panel? My experience was great on a 6800XT but moved over to a 40xx and grabbed latest driver and its no good.

Replying to my own post here because I found one of pieintheskytours latest videos which solved this for me : kzbin.info/www/bejne/epDdc3ljf7aXbtE I don't know which setting I had wrong, there were a few that differed but it wasn't my nvidia driver version or open XR version which was later so I guess it must have been one of the many others. Hey Pie in the Sky Tours - thanks for this hint. I tried MR switched on with DLSS (Quality) SU 10 Beta and the Carenado Pilatus PC-12 with HP Reverb G2 / Nvidia RTX 3090 and it works really well. An unbelievable jump in VR smoothness and no artefacts at all. A joy to use. Keep up you excellent work.

Absolutely a game changer on my RTX 3070 .... OpenXR motion reprojection now supports frame rates at 1/4 refresh rate so if your machine is CPU bound it still looks good. On my Reverb G2 this is 22-23fps. Smooth as silk. Propeller artifacts have been improved too.

After flying at 60fps without MR I just can't go back. I tried the MR today with this update and while I agree that there are far fewer artifacts (no propeller or dashboard distortion for instance) it's just not what I'd describe as "smooth". It looks and feels micro-stuttery, especially when looking out at the wing while banking the plane. I personally couldn't stand it after experiencing the smoothness and clarity at 60fps. Lately I've just been flying at 60fps on an i9 9900k and a 3090ti with DLSS on Quality with 85% FSR and the foveated rendering settings that you recommended in a different video and everything is just so clear and so smooth, it's great. I just need to avoid aircraft that cause fps loss (such as the SWS Kodiak 100) but I find that as long as I fly with the standard planes or with something like the JustFlight Piper Arrow everything is smooth as butter as long as I don't go in to some of the heavier areas. I can even fly through the Seattle area with enhanced city scenery without any real issues. I can't wait for SU10 to release and the new OpenXR Toolkit to drop so that I can try it with DX12 to see if it performs any better. I seem to recall getting smoother overall performance with DX12 while testing previously but I haven't been able to test it with the OpenXR Toolkit stuff because it just crashes out of VR with DX12 with the current version of OpenXR Toolkit. I saw a post by the author of that recently saying that he's fixed those problems and is planning to release a new version soon. I'm eventually planning to upgrade to an i9 13900k and an RTX4090 once those become available. I feel like with DLSS and FSR and foveated rendering, plus that hardware, it will finally get me to the performance level that I've been wanting in MSFS VR.

Although smooth, I get worse warping on the propeller disk than before the update. This was improved a few updates back, but now it seems to be as bad as it was originally.

I honestly can't say I've noticed this with the latest update and I've tried a few default and DLC planes. I can appreciate this can differ from plane to plane though, is there a particular plane where the warping is bad? What headset are you using, is it definately using OpenXR at 100% render scaling in preview? I also have OpenXR Toolkit running which allows me to run OpenXR at 100%, not sure if that improves things further but the combined experience is great.

@@dtrjones yep, 100% scaling in the tool, and the latest versions of all the relevant stuff. I can only say I’ve seen it with the Turbo Arrow, and I haven’t checked other planes yet. I hope it’s just that! I’ll give the Toolkit a whirl and see if that does anything, but I don’t see how they’re related regarding MR.

I'm afraid that I'm still in the bandwagon of bad artifacting when using MR. You got me excited there for a second :D Curious as to why we are all experiencing different results on this. Could be that we simply have a different tolerance threshold? But really on my setup it's so obvious it's unusable...

Did you make sure that you enabled the "Use latest preview OpenXR runtime" option on the Settings section of the OpenXR Tools? That needs to be enabled to get the latest version. After enabling that close out of OpenXR Tools and re-open it then check under the OpenXR Runtime tab/section and make sure the version shows as 112.2209.xxx, if it's 112.2208.xxx then you'll still see distortions.

Well it's still a mixed bag. The first VR session seemed fine but as I went out and back in VR the distortions appeared. On the other hand everything seems much smoother than before with MR disabled.

Now that MSFS Update 10 is released and Open XR has had an update, can i please ask you to do an updated version of your Quest 2 settings and guide (possibly including Virtual Desktop settings). I get so confused by the vast array of settings and your guide helped me immensely before. But at present the game for me is a bit of a mess, and so I am not flying at all. EDIT: Actually i figured stuff out today. I think most of my issues were with AirLink. Now that I switched to Virtual Desktop I have a much more stable platform with which to make adjustments. The colours are also more vibrant with VD compared to Airlink. I have it running pretty nicely and without disconnects from the PC for the first time. Have been able to increase the level of terrain and object detail and it is still very smooth with DLSS. Would still like to see your recommendations if you can be bothered dusting off your quest 2 (I wouldn't if I had a Reverb G2!).

It already uses OpenXR, but not the Windows implementation ) On my rig (i5-9600/2070/32ram) I currently use OVR Tool for supersampling 1.3 and OpenXR only for foveated rendering (quality preset)

Why is it that you'r always CPU-limited (limited by main thread) when motion reprojection is on and GPU limited when its off?

Can anybody advise what Nvidia settings and drivers they are using to have MR working well? I had a Radeon 6800XT with MR and it was great with MR, I didn't use XR toolkit. I have moved to a 4090 and now can't use MR without cockpit interfaces distorting and menu interfaces shimmering and fidgeting. Have tried switching the MR control between toolkit, fixing FPS in nvidia control panel. I found 30 fps lock better than 45 for the shimmer but not acceptable. For example the speed digits when scrolling look a mess. Lots of videos out there but every time I go through one it is apparent is out of date or geared towards FPS rather than MR stability, even if not that old. Thanks

I could never use it, it literally ran like _hit. I updated Open XR and it works unbelievably well. 33fpm running MSFT Beta, NVidia 3060, AMD Ryzen 5, 32RAM.

One or two more things. One, hope you’re feeling better (I’ve been outta the loop myself to a degree), and two, I recently purchased Samsung G9 49” monitor since I like both vr and screen flying. Since then, my vr frames have taken a dive, tho still flyable I do get a mixture of stutters and artifacts now. Im sure my 3080ti is working harder. Do you think if I up the voltage from where I lowered it to begin with will help or should I just minimize the screen while in vr. I’d do it now but it’s impossible for me to get to my desk at present. Thanks for any suggestions! I take full responsibility 😉 Cheers m8!

eh i dont think so. what u see on faltscreen is just copy of your vr. its not being rendered just for flatscreen

@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS if SU9 is the non-beta, then yes. Very true about those server issues. I’ve had those unexpected ctd’s, and at boot up, a message saying I’m not connected to server, try again (!). I’ll diddle n twiddle with it when time and space allows me 😉. Meanwhile, Thanks for your input. Appreciated 👍🏼

I’ll give it another try, but I’ve never had a good experience using MR with my 3080/i9-12700 setup as it wasn’t necessary. But lately I’ve been experiencing terrible stutters and even screen blacking-out briefly during stutters, so hopefully this may help 🙏

@@kennykanada I tried it also - It give me horrible stutters-- otherwise with it off --I'm smooth at around 40 fps with everything maxed in the menu.

ok if you have motion reprojection on what are your openxr tool kit settings on the reprojection settings oh and i just purchased weather force its awesome much better live weather. but im not sure if it turns on with the sim or do i have to run it first and then run the sim ?

As any weather app can do no more than you can do yourself using a weather preset. I wonder why some think it’s worth the money. Live weather defaults in MSFS so you would likely need to go to weather and select a preset. Which you will now have many more than we’re included in the base MSFS.

@@johnmaguire2185 Actually the live weather looks so much better and much more accurate than the default in Microsoft flight and if you are a VR user immersion is everything especially using the live weather

@@richardPalmisano I use VR most of the time. I fly using the UK met F214/5 data. I calculate wind adjusted course using that data and in MSFS I fly that heading right onto the waypoints. Using 215 I adjust CAS to TAS and that works out well.
