Playing MSFS (2024) for the first time and this really helped! Thanks

Dear Kip Being a retired CFI that hasn't flown GA since c. 1980 and been around MSFS since the first to X, I jumped at the MSFS2020 news and in spite of 78 years on the earth I wanted to get back to flying in any way I could. So, I bought it and a new gaming PC and started flying 8/18 and immediately realized how rusty I was in my knowledge of what GA airplanes have today. Garmin? I have one in my car but had never seen a G1000 so what can I do? I need instruction but where? I've watched all the videos and rated each tutor as to lesson plan and other things I sweated bullets over long ago. My conclusion is that if you're not at least a CFI you should be! It's a pleasure to watch and learn from your videos. They're well planned, you don't miss a thing and every word is clear. Sorry for the length here but I just had to tell you that nobody has better tutorials than you and tonight I was able to actually navigate to my house from KLNS instead of flying around in circles.

Got you beat. The big 80. And I've really been into VR since the start. Right now I have a new "X" and just getting started on MSFS. I'm going to VR for the sim when top end video card prices come back down. I loaded a screen capture into Photoshop and made notes as he spoke. Will print it out as a cheat sheet. You really cannot run this sim without a keyboard. Many needed commands are not available on the controller. I used the Xbox screen capture and upload to OneDrive to get all the Controller commands to my PC for printing.

Cesar I am 60 yrs old I soloed a 152 II when I was 17 which was a long time ago. LoL I knew I was rusty Skip, but really surprised at how much I remember even to this day. But some things I remember did slip away. And the way you explained things and it was so much help when you zoomed in. Some people don't do that. It really helped me out When I was refreshing my memory with your vid. Thank you again for being understanding with people and explaining things so well I was pleasantly surprised I subscribed to your channel and I hope I see more content soon. Meanwhile I will have watch what I missed. While I wait on new videos. Thanks again.

Nice demo! One thing to be careful of is using VS for a climb. As you get higher the rate you select may not be attainable and you’ll end up in a stall. Your best choice is to always use FLC for a climb and VS for your descents. I learned this recently when training for my instrument rating (actual plane, not a simulator).

Dear Kip, I understand this is an old video, but I have been trying to teach myself for a few weeks and I have seen countless videos, especially about the Autopilot on the Garmin. I would watch a video, take some notes and go and try and something would go wrong. WOW, yours was the best. Your instructions were right on the money. Slow paced, outstanding grasp of the content, calm and clear voice, fantastic examples, great demonstrations - coming from a retired teacher. A++ Now I hope this translates well into the Garming G1000 nxi. Thank you so much, John.

Another great tip is to setup your autopilot on the ground to handle your takeoff heading, climbing airspeed, and target altitude. Start of by bugging the runway heading. After takeoff, you can turn the autopilot on as soon as you are wheels up and let it fly!

Thanks for the video. I am not surprised by the fact that so many fatal accidents happen with the g1000. I had two incidents using xplane simulator. On autopilot I was flying a rectangular pattern and suddenly the plane started spiraling to the ground. I had to fight to gain control. I think I may have felt like the 747 max pilots. The second time in autopilot it just started steering somewhere else. This this thing needs a big red button that says MANUAL CONTROL.

One thing I missed, if you press the ALT button again to disengage altitude, you can manually fly to the altitude set, and it will then lock that altitude and auto pilot will fly at that altitude for you. It makes flying a bit more fun. Still looking for a way to control the rol of the plane after you use the flight director (FD) mode to maintain whatever heading you're flying at.

Brilliant Intro to G1000 .. thank you. One question.. I am using a trim wheel on My TB V1Flight Console to control trim. Sometimes when I switch the autopilot off, I find that the aircraft pitches up or down quite violently. Because, as I understand it, the AP uses the trim for attitude / vertical control, it can easily deviate quite a way from the trim set on the trim wheel before the AP was switched on and, since the trim wheel on the TB V1 is not motorised, as it will be in the real aircraft, the trim it is demanding has not changed. So, when using the trim wheel used as an axis, unless the software ensures that the trim wheel demand on exiting the AP is artifically set to the same as that in AP, there will always be a jump in pitch. I don't think that the software (at least for XBOX) includes this 're-registration' of trim wheel demand to match the AP current setting before switch.. hence my plunge to the ground when switching off the AP on ILS approach, on final approach!! Have you experienced this? If so, do you have any solutions e.g. map trim wheel to increase / decrease elevator trim (if available).

Hey Kip! Thank you for your informative videos! I have a quick question. So, I've done everything you showed in the video here. But my 172 doesn't do the same thing yours is doing while on autopilot. When I attempt to use alt mode in order to hold my altitude, for example, my aircraft does not acknowledge any change. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It's the same thing for my speed and heading. Also, I can set my altitude for, let's say, for example, 3,000 ft. prior to takeoff. My aircraft still doesn't respond to the setting. What am I doing wro🎉ng and how can I fix this?
