Basic IFR & Auto Pilot on the G1000 GPS | Microsoft Flight Simulator | Cessna 172

Now that we've had coffee in Flagstaff after a VFR flight in the Cessna 152, let's fly back to Sedona on an IFR flight plan using the G1000 GPS in a Cessna 172. This tutorial summarizes the important things into one video so you can start flying an IFR route with a GPS approach right away. I also covered the main things to know to start using the G1000 Auto Pilot comfortably. The Cessna 172 is the most sold and owned aircraft in the world and it's a really great airplane to get to know. There's some "bonus" material in here as well like flight planning, how to know what altitude to fly at, and how to use the mixture. Notes: On my final approach I was approaching a little fast (on purpose) but the recommended approach speed in a C172 SP is closer to 65 knots. Also, you only want "the most engine rpm's" from the mixture setting during takeoff and landing. For cruising, in many airplanes, you want the lowest operational rpm to decrease wear on the engine, and increase your fuel economy. I messed up the terminology for the "localizer" as well. There is no ILS at this runway, so the vertical and horizontal guidance you receive is actually GPS data.

Some of the details though...I mean, if were working through ifr, we probably know the basics like autopilot. The ifr handbook clearly says, if you don't already know the plane, end now and go to that lesson first. (No actually handbook, but common sense.) Still, nice to see an ifr tutorial that uses the plane we're most likely to practice with, and not an Airbus or other airliner.

So I’m a beginner as of yesterday to flight sims. I dove in hard and bought the premium deluxe game of the year edition along with the thrustmaster hotas 1 flight stick and thruster combo( no pedals yet). I’ve been practicing with analog instruments just trying to master those first but after watching this video which was by far the best explained video I’ve seen, now I want to step up my game. Thank you for explaining this in your video. I’m still learning all the aviation terminology. So far I’ve had a blast with this game. Y favorite so far is the icon a5, single rear prop that can land in water or on land. Can’t wait for the gliders in august I believe.

You stated you felt it a bit turbulent on short final, don't forget you added 2 notches of flaps while still a little bit high and you nosed dived plane a bit to drop 500ft asap. Plus you turned off wind display to know direction and wind speed that could be playing a number here. Great video overall.

The G1000 is every beginners favorite starter plane. This plane has taught me how to fly better. Every game session I would turn off at least one of the auto pilot controls just to get a feel for how a plane moves especially during bad weather. I can now fly and safely land planes without auto pilot. The hard part for me is using the brakes without tipping some of the planes over. I play on xbox so the controls are still hard to use.

@@BradySkye I think lot of people can use the autopilot now on these kinds of planes. But very basic ILS (reading the chart, getting the NAV1/2 setup right) is enough for most of us. But it took me ages to figure out. Now i can use that, but it's hard. Most of the tuts are like 45 minutes, u dont understand anything anymore after 5 minutes :D

Great tutorial. When adjusting mixture, the key indicator is Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) which is on the G1000 in this plane. If you don't have EGT, lean it until engine starts to lose power, then add mixture towards rich so that engine runs smooth. In real life, you don't want to be too lean, which will damage the engine.

23:08 to know if the VOR are working use the TITS : Tune Identify Test Set so basically you set your NAV frequency, then you "listen" on the radio if you can hear the morse code (if not, it's out of range or out of service), then test if the CDI points at it and finally set your FD to follow it

@@BradySkye FSEconomy is free, but you can't sign up right now and seems to have frequent outages. OpenAir is subscription but i keep seeing countless people who played FSEconomy then finally tried OpenAir and found it well worth it. OpenAir UI is great and seems easier to use,, and i can actually use it. Maybe in future i'll try FSEconomy once they work out the server issues and i can actually sign up.

Great tutorial, given the fact you cover quite a lot of ground in just 30mins. Well done ! Just a few additional notes ; - When you do GPS approaches, you don't use ILS because like at Sedona there isn't one, so there is no real (ILS) localizer.The vertical and lateral guidance comes from the GPS database installed in the aircraft and GPS navigation. So it is better to say the GPS provides vertical and lateral guidance and with GPS approach you will see magenta CDI indications. For ILS - based on ground-based system - you need an ILS freqency to be tuned in, the CDI set to LOC and if all set properly you will see green CDI guidance. - When using the autopilot, it is recommended to use FLC (flight level change) for climbs and VS (vertical speed) for decents. Main reason is that as you climb, the performance will detoriate (less engine power). If you have selected VS then the aircraft will gradually pitch up the nose more and more, trying to maintain that vertical speed figure (as instructed). However, as you climb the speed will detoriate, and there is a risk that the speed will become too low and you stall the airplane. This should be avoided, also because the pilot might be surprised (not understanding why the stall is happening). Therefore, alsways use FLC for climbs and VS for descents. Hope this nice tutorial inspires people to learn more about the many nice Garmin G1000 features.

a "best practice" is to always climb with FLC (flight level change) and climb via an airspeed - this mode has built in stall protection. VS is good for decent, but will stall the airplane if left unchecked, trying to maintain whatever climb rate you chose.

The menu should work when you call up the flight plan and select a waypoint on your route, select menu, and it will give you the option to activate leg, or cancel flight plan, etc.

Thanks Jason! I can't speak for all panels being full operational but from what I have tried they are for the most part yes. Some of the airliners may have had quite a bit that's not, but there are updates always coming out and adding more functions to those planes too. GPS and autopilot are fully functional on the planes I've tried. I love the TBM 930.

Wow, awesome. Just one tip, when climbing, it is better to use FLC instead of VS, as FLC will guarantee you will not stall. VS is better used in descent. Just a tip! :)

Yes i found it dangerous because if the plane somehow loses speed it well keep pitching up to stay at that climb rate and this well lead to a stall .... and iam not a pilot just a fsx player

When lined up with the glide slope the approach button will actually enable the auto pilot to automatically fly the approach for you all the way down to the runway. It will not automatically land, but it will get you very close. I used it in my TBM landing in the Ireland LIVE stream and may use it again on Wednesday's stream in the TBM.

The hard left turn is sort of realisting because IRL the torque generated from the propeller can cause the aircraft to streer left. MSFS definitely exagerates it though.

to confirm VOR is working you turn on the audio of the VOR and listen for the morse code letters for that VOR station - was the only way to confirm prior to GPS 1000

@@BradySkye you should have picked the localizer earlier, that is where most times an ILS has the GS intercept and where you match the center dot on the GS indicator to the altitude on the chart to verify the GS on the ILS is working. Maltese is for Non Pression Approach. Take a look at a Cat II ILS and you will see there is no Maltese cross, you only get the GS intercept point, which is the FAF.

@@AgonxOC I also saw a few problems with the explanation of Localizer and FAF. On the charts, there is no localizer. Cannot use a localizer if there is nothing there. The Final Approach Fix, (FAF) is there to indicate you are allowed to descend to the airport environment. On a precision approach, you can descend to Decision Height. On a Non-precision approach, you can descend to Minimum Descent Altitude.(MDA)

When setting the altitudes (9000 vs 9500/East/West) in the altitude plan I bet that you can drag the "dot" downwards to adjust the height that you want? I have not tried this yet, but I will! Thanks for the informative videos! :)

How did you know to set the NAV receiver frequency to 113.85? And do I need to do that if I’m using gps mode or is that only for VOR mode?

So the menu button does work. If you click on your flight plan, then hit menu, it’ll give you several options. One of which deletes your flight plan. Still learning what else it works on.
