We'll learn about RNAV approaches and then fly one using the new G1000 NXi in Microsoft Flight Simulator. In this video, I do an IFR flight from KALB to KMHT using VNAV with autopilot, and then fly an RNAV LPV approach. This video shows the first version of the G1000 NXi (verison 0.1.0) by the Working Title team, which is available in the in-game MSFS Marketplace.
Since the NXi is changing rapidly, some things in this video may be different today, so check out my NXi Update videos in this playlist: • MSFS: G1000 NXi Update...

Just a note from a real pilot to Simmers. You don't always need to use full flap. Flaps main function aside from slowing the plane is to increase the steepness of an approach and to lower the stall speed. So on a long runway, you'd rarely use more than one stage of flap, but on a short runway, you'd use full flap. This is Small simple and complex GA Planes I'm talking about. Commercial aircraft have their own set of rules.

I use full flaps because I always come in hot af lol. Never fails. When I try to come in at the correct speed I stall because I'm a noob lol.

I always use 20 degrees (don’t want a stall spin) unless I’m dealing with a crazy crosswind (Florida pilot) but yeah I always see the simulator pilots using full flaps.

UPDATE: Since this video was posted (showing the NXi way back on version 0.1.0), the procedure for arming VNAV changed slightly. You must first change your selected altitude first, THEN press the VNV button to enable VNAV. At 13:04 in this video, I was able to do it the opposite way, but that is no longer the case. I explain this change here in the NXi 0.6.0 video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJmbh515mrmmo5o
@robertmac5352
@robertmac5352 2 жыл бұрын
When you initially set up VNAV, the altitudes are shown in white on the flight plan view. In the original G1000, those white altitudes need to be switched from white to large blue font for the VNAV to use them. If the altitudes are left in white, that indicates that it is an informational only atitude. Everything else looked good.

This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. I love the way that you explain every acronym and don't quickly make adjustments that you don't explain (many other FS KZbinrs are guilty of that). You give exactly the level of detail that I want. But even a Persian carpet must contain a fault, to signal that it does not attempt to attain perfection, which can only exist in the mind of God, and in this case the fault is that you consistently mispronounce CUTSA as CUSTA. You have a subscriber for life, or at least until I lose interest in flight simming.

Agreed this felt like being with a really good flight/simulator instructor. I really learned a lot. However, the mispronunciation isn’t going to get you a flight violation lol. The descending below 2000’ and landing without a clearance will 😂. Thank You for the G1000 Nxi Gen Fam!

I'm just getting back into simming after a 15 year hiatus, and as such I've had much to learn about the G1000. This is as concise a tutorial as I've seen, very well presented and explained. You can only fly around your house so many times before you want more, and learning this stuff has been a real brain-teaser--but has added so much more to my simming experience. Thanks so much.

Kip on the Ground: Kip, this is an excellent video by you. I commend you on your very clear instructions, slow speech just right so we can follow and understand as we are being taught. You are very precise and methodical with no nonsense mentality which is the quality of a true teacher. I see so many videos of those who are too rapid in all they do and leads to a lot of waisted time and effort on their part. You cover all the important steps to help and assist the student to become successful. I definitely liked, subscribed and hit the bell. Thank you so much. Greatly appreciated.

Absolutely excellent! I came here because I missed the glidescope manually coming in on the approach over the waypoints too often. Very annoying. Sometimes they are very close together. Not anymore thanks to vnav. never knew that one before! As a bonus, I learned how to use FLC for climb and IAS (in conjunction with my multi panel). I'm practicing with c208 for cargo and passenger missions. I hardly ever touch the stick now except for TO and Landing. Just like the big guys. Well done sir.

First let me say, great video! I had already figured out a lot of this on my own (being a real world instrument rated private pilot helps), but you filled in a lot of the gaps for me, especially with regards to GPS approaches in general. Unfortunately, I stopped flying before they became a thing, and now my disability probably makes me ineligible for a medical, so I live vicariously through the sim. Not only did I subscribe, I actually bookmarked this video to return to so I can refresh my memory from time to time. I understand that we can now file NASA reports online, so perhaps we should all update our "After Landing Checklist" to read as follows: Flaps: UP Spoilers (if equipped): DOWN Strobe Lights: OFF Landing Lights: OFF Taxi Lights: ON APU (if equipped): START NASA Report: FILED That way, by the time we even reach the ramp we will have covered our own butts from infractions like forgetting to talk to the TWR prior to landing! ;-) On a more serious note, I have always read that it is a best practice "for passenger comfort" to keep descent rates in unpressurized aircraft to 600 fpm or less. Is this true, or just some old wives tale? And will future updates allow us to specify a descent rate, rather than have that 1,000 fpm used as a default, unchangeable value? Obviously, after the IAF, you gotta do what you gotta do to hit those crossing restrictions, but if a smoother descent is actually more comfortable for the passengers, and if ATC becomes intelligent enough to give more advance notice on expected procedures, real world GA descent rates, and the ability to make a request for a descent if ATC is not on the ball. None of those things can be done with the current implementation of ATC, for example the descent. In the real world, if I felt like I was being left too high, I would just key the mike and say "CALLSIGN is looking for lower", which would generally be followed up by an approval in the form of "CALLSIGN, descend and maintain X,000 feet", or possibly "CALLSIGN, descend at pilots discretion to and maintain X,000 feet", assuming there were no potential conflicts. The default ATC and even most third party ATC software packages are a long way from being able to handle _that_ request! For that matter, the default ATC doesn't even know how to give actual vectors, or what a SID or STAR is, whereas third party stuff mostly has that figured out. The default has improved a lot since product launch, but it is still stuck in the 90s as far as basic functionality goes. No voiced usage, despite the fact that MS practically invented it with Cortana. Complete lack of knowledge of standards, like the aforementioned SIDS and STARS, much less altitude or speed restrictions on those procedures, no ability to make more varied requests, like "Say altimeter for CALLSIGN", or "CALLSIGN would like 4,000 feet". It's almost like they didn't even try to improve it from FSX. Personally, I've solved that problem (somewhat) by going with pilot2ATC, but it costs as much as the base level sim, which many simmers would strongly object to, and has it's own set of problems and issues. The only thing that approaches real world ATC is obviously VATSIM, but I find it to be un- or under-staffed every time I try to use it, so I've given up on it. Not only do I not have the client installed, I'd have to resort to google to figure out where to get it, and I would need instructions on how to use it, that's how long it's been since I even tried. The last time I tried, which admittedly was well over a decade ago because I took a long break from simming, I got a rookie controller whose instructions led to me overrunning the runway at KLAS and essentially putting my 737 down in the desert, several miles outside of town. Hopefully in that amount of time, the training requirements have led to the chances of that happening being practically nil, but if it's not staffed, it's not staffed, and since it's all volunteer, there's nothing anybody can do about that except maybe beg. I'm off topic, but I would care for your insight as to the 600 fpm "guideline" for unpressurized aircraft, as well as whether or not those "variables" will actually be variable as the progress on the NXi continues. Very useful. Like the table reference. Now maybe I can do something besides an old school ILS approach. :P

Kip awesome awesome video I know how to do ILS approaches but I never played around with Rnav too much and I just installed the NXI GPS so I'm trying to get familiarized with that. Very detailed video, thanks so much.
