Motion reprojection enables additional frames to improve the fluid motion of the scene, this is something that Oculus users have enjoyed for many years, but now finally Windows mixed reality has caught up!! Make sure you turn preview mode on and motion projection set to auto in the Open XR dev tool. Cheers all

Despite my previous dislike of motion reprojection, due to the various artefacts if produced, I am now fully converted (thanks to all your enthusiasm and promotion of it) to using it for low flight VFR flying ... it certainly greatly reduces, even eliminates, the stutter/judder. My equipment is very similar to yours: 3090, i9-10900 with G2, and now my software settings are the same as yours, except that I'm using the latest driver, 466.47. What I have only just discovered is that if I have HAGS On I get a significant amount of stutter on the ground, which disappears with HAGS Off. I have not yet checked if this is because I'm using the latest driver, not 457.30 like you.. I use the OpenXR onscreen FPS monitor and with HAGS off it remains blue 99% of the time but with HAGS on it alternates between blue and red 50% of the time. What is you opinion of the Motion Reprojection option of Auto or Always On? Keep up the good work!

Hi Steve, appreciating your videos so much and many thanks. I followed your recommendations and just flew from KJFK to KBOS with acticated motion reprojection on auto the first time. Even we have almost the PC spec, I only have an RTX 3070 only, I got the first time a bit motion sick..... The FPS itself was stable more or less but I had stutters all over the flight and a bit wobbly view out of the window. That's why I have to test the same fly without and with my old OXR config first again. Currently I'm not really happy. It is not a critic from myside just my personal feedback. Can't await the next videos from you.

Hi, strange. I tested it with the Bell 47 in a VFR flight from LOIR. Fps were stable and I saw few wobbles if I looked through the rotor blades. Very important is to NOT set all graphic options to high. You definitly will cause an CPU bottleneck and than you will get stutters for shure because your GPU will get too few frames handled over by the CPU. Look at all of your threads. I think one of them reaches 100%. This is the reason why you see stutters. By the way I am on I9-9900K@5.0Ghz 64GB RAM@3600 and RTX3090 OC and don't have my settings too high. If you had stable fps rund about 40 than you are good to go and enable motionreprojection. This protects you from severe stutters in demanding areas. To avoid wobbles in single prop default aircrafts I use a prob mod from flightsim.to. Steve, great video. It might be helpful to point out the following to avoid confusion. With latest OpenXR Developer Tools version you noted in the About tab (106.2104.15001.0), you will get two different version numbers for the Windows Mixed Reality Runtime shown on the Status tab, DEPENDING on whether you have the Use Latest Preview OpenXR Runtime checked or not. If not checked, this version number will probably be 105.2104.13002. If checked, the version will be 106.2104.15001. This caught me out until I tried checking and unchecking the Use Latest Preview.
@waltersbg3 жыл бұрын
Except for some of us (still haven't figured out why), if not checked the runtime version is 105.2104.13002 and if checked the runtime version is 105.2102.1104 (older)!! Without being able to get the 106.* runtime, we cannot get the 22.5hz reprojection.

Steve, Thanks again for your work on this. Great Video! If you could, let me know what "Runtime Version" shows in your "System Settings" tab in OpenXR. Mine still shows the old version there (105.2102.11004) even though like you it shows the new one v106... in "About". At this point for me, anything under 30fps is still ghosting and stuttering like mad so I'm dubious that I am actually getting the 4th frame. Trying find out why! Thanks again!!!

Apologies that is "System Status" tab...
@waltersbg3 жыл бұрын
@Bond Bond, I'm in exactly the same boat. My "About" says I have the v106 but my runtime version in the System Status tab is v105 (seemingly an OLDER 105 if I have the preview runtime enabled). I would also like it if Steve could tell/show us what his shows in the System Status tab. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this and I will obviously let you know if I figure it out! Update: I've tried everything I can think of, up to and including uninstalling both the OpenXR tools and OpenXR itself. Both are re-installed now and I still don't get the 106.* runtime. Note that "uninstalling" these apps doesn't seem to remove them from the system (at least the directories still exist). But, why are you and I different? Are you a Windows Insider? I am and I am set to the beta channel. If anything, that should mean that I would have gotten this sooner. But do you notice in this video that Steve's shows updated yesterday? Mine was last updated (not counting the uninstall/reinstall I did today) on 4/21. Maybe we just don't have the latest preview runtime yet, somehow?
@macmusica3 жыл бұрын
@@waltersbg I tried switching Preview OFF, then it shows v105 in System Status, if you enable it again you must close the APP and open it again to see it shows v106. Personally I really do not see any difference at all. 2080TI ULTRA and no evidence of a 3rd added frame.
@waltersbg3 жыл бұрын
@@macmusica Thanks for the reply. When I turn preview ON, close the APP and open it again, I actually have an OLDER version. Nothing I do will give me v106 in the runtime version. Because of that, I don't have reprojection possible at 22.5fps. The advantage of this, which I'm looking forward to, is that I can only get the advantages (and, admittedly, disadvantages) of reprojection if my fps is above 30. With this change, if I can ever get it to work, I will be able to have an fps of 23-30 and still get reprojection.

How many frames do you loose when you go from reprojection off to on? ... I tried so often to get reprojection to work but ended up all the time leaving it off on my G2 3080 5800x and 32gb ram. I don't know what it is or if it's normal but it was always a lot more stutters and about 50 to 60% less fps so that I was unable to reach a fluid reprojection. Well but in the end I'm pleased for now with reprojection off, the experience is still awesome but I'm still hoping for some nice jumps in performance with the upcoming updates during the summer :)
@4secsharkmr3523 жыл бұрын
Even with your system do not set the graphic options too high. You definitly cause then an CPU Bottleneck because one thread is for shure on 100%. Than the GPU will get too few frames delivered by the CPU. This causes heavy stutters. Motionreprojection helps you if you don't have an bottleneck. If you have round about 40 frames than you are good to go and take a look at the taskmanager. Look at your CPU threads. If one is at 100% you will get stutters. For more indeep information read this: forums.flightsimulator.com/t/my-2070-super-vr-settings-and-suggestion-reverb-g2-wmr/342582

@@4secsharkmr352 yeah I know that thread it definitely helped a lot by dialing in my settings. I'd say most of the time I have acceptable frames around 30-40 fps but especially flying low near big airports with photogrammetry around and in overcast/rainy conditions and an additional sunset, fps just tank no matter how low I set the resolution or settings. MSFS sometimes just wants to kill your frames :D ... When I activate reprojection it costs me a lot of frames on average and I really have to painfully reduce the settings to counter that, but in the end there are still these scenarios where it just tanks. With reprojection on it just starts to stutter pretty bad in this occasions so at least for me I always found it to be much more enjoyable to leave it set to off, because of the performance gain and less stutters in these scenarios. I was just wondering what the experience is like for all the people who have reprojection on because I just couldn't reproduce this absolutely smooth experience, how some people describe it.

I tried non-scientifically HAGS/Game mode both ON then OFF and I can't tell any difference at all between them. You asked about locking to 22.5fps/hz, well if you go in to the NVCP > Manage 3D settings > Program settings (rather than Global settings) and select Microsoft Flight Simulator in the drop down (1.) there is an options to set Max Frame Rate in section (2.) below it. I set this to 23fps and it seems to force (as best as it can or very closely) Motion Reprojection on to Refesh rate / 4 (22.5hz).

Thanks a usual for the video Steve. I have a 3080 and for me this does not work at all. I have same driver and NVDIA settings like you. For me the artifacts are unbearable , not only in the prop but also looking around. The strange thing is that I have WONDERFUL FPS numbers when it is OFF. I always have 50 to 60 FPS in regular areas. It feels great with reprojection off but I can feel it is not 90 of course , but it feels natural and smooth enough (no jitters). You would think with my 50fps of base , reprojection would only need to generate one more frame to get to 90... but even then the artifacts and wobble is horrible . Am I missing something ? Is almost as if I have to be EXACTLY at a multiple of 90 frames for reprojection to crate a clean multiplier and make things smooth enough ? With my natural 50 to 60fps..it just breaks things totally I repeat I have the same OpenXR version and settings (I run the sum with medium settings to achieve such native FPS, but that is the only difference with you)
@waltersbg3 жыл бұрын
I have heard other say that if you are shooting for reprojection that you should set your settings to get close to the 45 or 30 or whatever fps it is going to lock at. Since you are happy with yours as is, you probably don't want to tweak anything (haven't we all learned that by now?), but you may find that if you get closer to 45fps before turning on reprojection that it will be smoother. It does make some sense. The problem with not having reprojection is that each time the headset goes to refresh the screen, it may or may not have a new frame ready. So sometimes it will have to display the same frame twice. But only sometimes. Thus, jittering or ghosting. On the other hand, if you turn on reprojection and it "locks" to 45fps, it is generating one fake frame for each real one...even if you don't really need that many. So now you've got it out of synch with the 50-60fps that the game is able to render at and, again, you sometimes end up with the same frame twice or, potentially, skipping frames.
@4secsharkmr3523 жыл бұрын
Hi if you have a stabile fps rate over 30 you are good to go. There is no need for motionreprojection On. But if you look hard 90 degrees to the right or left you will see stutters. Fir flying with Airlines thats no problem, but for scenic flying it could be annoying. And than it is time for motionreprojection ON. To reduce the wobbles I am using an propeller mod for standard and deluxe planes. de.flightsim.to/file/3412/10-propeller-mods-for-the-fs2020-standard-edition It helps me lot. Nevertheless If you are flying the HC135 or the Bell47 you will have those artifacts.

@@4secsharkmr352 thanks for the add on link . I will try it. In my case I don’t see stutters but just natural motion blur as I don’t have 90 FPS . But when flying at 45 or above , it is perfectly mangeable and not annoying. Of course it is awesome seeing clean sections at 90 when I turn reprojection on (which usually locks at 45fps for me), but the vast majority of the landscape , prop , etc is just a jittery fest and totally kills the experience . I truly cannot understand how someone would prefer that to real 45fps . Thanks Steve. But i still did not get the 45fps thing. Its 90hz...for both eyes? So 45hz per eye? And what is that with 4th frame? I set mine Reverb to 60hz in WMR. So i need 30 fps per eye? Does this make any sense? Thanks for you efforts! ;)
@waltersbg3 жыл бұрын
Don't worry about per eye. The displays in the headset are being refreshed (redrawn) at 90hz (or 60hz if you have your reverb set to 60hz). If the game is only able to render frames at, say, 25fps, then you are going to have some ghosting or jittering or other artifact due to the fact that the game is only updating to a new frame at 25 times per second but the headset wants to display a new image 90 times per second (they are out of synch and sometimes you get the same frame twice). For the best smoothness, you want the headset to be receiving 90fps. Of course your GPU cannot render MSFS at 90fps in VR. So, you enable reprojection and the software "creates" extra frames so that the headset is receiving 90 frames per second. These created frames are like a guess of what the frames would look like in between the 25 frames that the game is able to render each second. If the game is able to render half the required frames (45fps or 30fps, depending on how you have the refresh rate of the headset set) then the software only has to "create" one extra frame for each real frame. If you are able to render only 1/3 of the required frames (30fps or 20fps, depending on how you have the refresh rate of the headset set), then the software has to "create" 2 extra frames for every real frame. With this latest change, there are 3 created frames for every real frame, so you have 4 frames total for every frame the game renders. Does that help?

I don't seem to get any benefit from this. I have all the latest updates. When I use the OpenXr "Display Frame Timing Overlay" it shows that it is applying "Depth Reprojection (red colour) and no Full motion Reprojection (blue colour). I actually get a smoother experience with the same graphics settings and Motion Reprojection off so I am doubting that it is working properly for me?! One question would be, does your frame rate jump around not just between 22.5 and 30 fps? Does it go wildly 23,24,25,26,27,28,29 also or should it be fixed to 22.5 or 30 fps?
@4secsharkmr3523 жыл бұрын
Hi, don't rely only on motion reprojection. Set up your MsFs setting so that you are able to get round about minimum 30 fps. Than go and enable motionreprojection in OpenXR. The stutters are then minimal.

@@4secsharkmr352 I appreciate the reply. When I have 30fps and reprojection off I find it smooth enough to use normally. But say if I increase the render scale from 80 to 100 with reprojection off, it is too jittery because the fps falls to 24 fps. At that point I put reprojection on to help with the stutters, it actually drops the fps to 20fps and looks worse, no smoothing at all and a lower fps than with it off. If I check the "Display Frame Timing Overlay" at that point it is full red. Is it working if it is blue only?? How do I know that it is actually kicking in if it is not helping at all?! I'm just trying to determine if it is actually switched on at all because I'm not seeing all these amazing benefits. Only a lower frame rate.

@@markmonty9349 what GPU are you using? It looks like an GPU bottleneck. Sometimes it is an CPU bottleneck too. You can clearly see an CPU bottleneck when one Thread is at 100%.
