In today’s video I will be discussing whether it’s worth upgrading your PC in order to enjoy VR in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ➡️ www.youtube.co...
I have been getting quite a lot of questions about whether or not it’s worth upgrading the CPU, GPU, amount of RAM or similar, especially since SU10 beta was released. This is such a valid question that I thought I would share my thoughts with you and hopefully this will help some of you with your planning.
Since testing the beta I have really noticed an increase in performance all round in VR which is really exciting for all of us looking for the best possible VR experience, however there is always the question “is my system good enough to run VR?” The reason I am choosing to explore this debate now is because this is the biggest improvement for VR so far in MSFS.

I just bought a reverb g2 and set up my VR using your tips and I am amazed by how real it is. It is a different simulator to a flat screen. I could never go back and I’m so excited for where VR is going with MSFS.

@@sesvid I was playing it on a 65 4K 120hz. It wasn’t as good as a dedicated monitor but I came from XBOX. This simulator inspired me to by a i9 PC with a Nvidia 3090 and 32g ram. I was undecided between a high end monitor or VR and I decided on VR without really knowing what to expect. I am confident that I made the right choice for me. The tips on settings and OpenXR toolkit have it running smooth and looking great, even runs acceptable with complex aircraft such as the Bae146 & DC6. I am not knowledgeable when it comes to pc’s however I have found it easy enough to set up. I would recommend VR.

@@xxxxjet1982xxxx Thank you very much for your reply, it helps me pretty much in my decision. Even though I'm still not 100% sure which way I should definitely go. My case is very similar to yours: I came from PS4 Pro, playing on a 49" 4K 60Hz Panasonic TV and I wish to switch over to PC gaming again. Initially I started gaming on PC at the end of the 80s with a commodore 64. It was at that time I started to enjoy simulation games, especially for everything that is flying. Somewhere in the mid 90s I then switched over to console (PS1) and stayed on console until now. The console made everything easier for me and my busy schedule in life. I only used PCs for work, mostly 3D CAD. But since Microsoft brought us this magnificent Flight Simulator, I thought that along with VR this has to be great. But I've never done VR. I don't know if I, or my old body, will be able to handle VR. What is clear to me right now is that I will get a nice PC in the first place, just waiting for prices to drop a little more. Still hesitant to go with AMD, Intel/Nvidia, or AMD Nvidia. From what I know, at least I think it is, Intel/Nvidia looks to be more adequate for MSFS and VR. Also still hesitating if it is going to be a 3080, 3080ti or even a 3090. It all depends on the price evolution in the following few months. What is giving me more headache is display vs VR and if display, what kind of display. Should I go directly to VR with a Reverb G2 and keep my old 1080p 24" monitor for work stuff. Or should I go first for the monitor, which gives me also headache because; 21:9 or 16:9, 1440p or go all in with 2160p. If 21:9 it has to be at least 38". If 16:9, rather 27" or 32". I don't like to sit to close to the monitor, my eyes doesn't like that anymore. For work, 32" 16:9 would be awesome. But for gaming 21:9 should be more immersive. I think I should first go for a monitor in order to get used to MSFS first and maybe wait for the Reverb G3. But then if I go for a 4K monitor, I'm scared that with VR I will miss resolution and image quality over the monitor. How is the resolution of the G2? Closer to 1080p, 1440p or 2160p monitor? Thanks again for your reply 👍 And sorry for my long comment 😂 I just started to realize how much choice we have to today for Gaming PCs. Which on one hand is great. But on the other hand it makes things so complicated and time consuming to choose the right stuff.

@@sesvid the resolution on VR is a definite drop from a monitor however I feel that it is so immersive I’m willing to sacrifice the clarity and sharpness for the immersion. However if you get headaches, vr will certainly not help. I would suggest trying it first if you can.

Great vid. I bought a 6700xt a few months back (just before the prices dropped significantly..ouch!). Glad i did though. VR is so much more realistic to use daily than my RX580 was. I wanted a card i could afford with the most amount of VRAM as i always remember XP11 having options that benefited from extra vram and felt cheated with my 4gb of vram at the time. I promised myself never again. Being able to fly at around 40fps in SU9 makes me excited for SU10 and beyond.

After a year of frustration with MSFS, especially in VR, I upgraded my cpu last fall as it was the bottleneck with my 3080. From i7 10700 to i9 12900, but that required a new mobo and new cooling. So it was more costly than anticipated. But well worth it as everything now runs ultra smooth where I rarely tweak things anymore. Looking forward to update 10!

It was working fine for me with a 10700k and RTX 3070. Obiously the settings weren't maxed, but I was happy with the smoothness. But since a few days, it has become abysmall. SU15 did a great job at first, but all of a sudden I get a powerpoint presentation in my face.

Thx Chris. Indeed sensible to hang on for while with what you got to see the actual benefit for SU10 with all new hardware around the corner. Like myself I did a complete new rig build 1,5 year ago in the meanwhile and costed a fortune to get the RTX3090 in there. I will skip at least the 40 series for now. With the OpenXR tool kit I was already having very good results so it will even improve now with SU10. At the other hand I had to spend some of my budget for the Fanatec hahahaha.

Good to hear! I wasn't sure if I made a mistake by purchasing 3080 desktop on sale last month. I'm happy how the games perform on my 4K display but was wondering if I would get more performance for VR gaming if I went for more expensive setup. 3090 and 4000 series are completely out of budget for me so I have to settle for 3080 and quite happy with it. I'm excited to hear more performance increase is coming soon.

I think we are at that point in hardware development where the cost out weighs the benefit in upgrading. The limiting factor is now your eyes!!!!!! and brain!!!!!!!!. I am using an i9 11 series and a rtx3080ti, I am not using the beta combined with a Varjo Aero . With the expected improvements in su10 it is hard to see where further significant gains can be made. As per usual excellent content mate

Certianly waiting for the 4000 series cards but a good Nvidia driver could also give us more optimised performance.

Remember that FS2020 (like all the other versions of MSFS) is CPU limited therefore I'm not suree an upgraded G{U will improve FPS. My own testing with a i9-9900k (stock) and a RX6800XT and a RTX3090 give frame rates of mid 20s and show very little difference whatever AA mode selected in DX11 or DX12. This is with the FBW A320nx at KLAX.

I bought a quest 2, and tried to play MSFS in VR with my 15-6500 and 1060. It was stuttery and the buildings were ugly. Some rigs need upgrading lol. Anyways I have a new rig ordered with i7 12700k and a 3080 12 gb and 32 gig of 3600mhz ram - and i cannot wait to be able to fly in VR. And the price had dropped significantly, both for a Quest 2 VR headset and the GPU. I could have waited to see what the 4000 series looks like, but honestly after the supply bottleneck for the 3000 cards I think I could have been waiting a long time to get one at a reasonable price in Australia. So, yeah, I am an eager beaver. Got MSFS at launch, and have been struggling with performance for too long, even for flat gaming.

Wait wait wait.... It is sadly not only hardware, that makes an exsperience. Still a lot of update of "engines" within VR is needed and here I mean Steam, Ocolus, Windows Mixed Reality and Pimax. Sadly when you run Steam Vr with fx. Reverb G2, then your hardware could do better, due to Steam VR down have a positiv effect on Windows Mixed Reallity Headset... I deffently would wait it out and my specs are Reverb G2, Ryzen 7 5800X, RTX 3080 with 32 gb ram..... Looking forward to new headset for VR to hit the market and especially those with Micro LED ....

Go for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. It‘s a flightsim monster and is substantially faster than anything Intel has to offer for the moment. Be aware though of a nasty USB issue that causes problems with the Reverb G2 on some X570 and B550 chipset motherboards.

@Orion @Lucas unfortunately the issue persists with some motherboards to this day. I personally had an issue with a Gigabyte B550 motherboard where the G2 only properly works with the front panel USB ports. It consistently fails to operate when connected to any backside USB port regardless of generation. So yes there might have ben some fixes for some boards or chipsets but certainly not all.

I've just tried a rift s headset on a 3080 and it was ok but not impressive. I appreciate there are much better headsets but feel the 3080 would struggle to run them smoothly at a descent frame rate. I'm starting to lean towards eye/head tracking over VR for now. My pc has cost nearly 2G and I'm not sure I want to shell out another 600 to find it's barely capable.

Oculus headsets are not really that good. They all have low refresh rates. The Quest 2 was stuck at 72 Hz until an update and the Rift S is an 80 Hz headset. You can usually get the Reverb G2 on sale for $399, it just came off that sale like two days ago. I bought the Quest 2, but it was so bad I returned it after three days. The Rift S is like playing the game on a 480p monitor. The G2 is like playing it at 4k. It is that huge of a difference. I use a Asus Rog Strix 1080 and get smooth FPS on the G2 with MSFS and DCS. I have the Resolution turned down to 75%, but it is still like a 2k monitor. With a 3080 I could get the same smoothness at 100% or better.
