@@Horendus123 Because for the type of flying in this video, it's rather slow paced, therefore 35-45fps feels absolutely fine. If I were to play a fast paced shooter, or fly a fighter jet low down (like I say in this video), it would be a different story.

I've been using an Oculus Rift CV1 on a GTX1080 i7 with 16GB RAM for several years without any problems whatsoever. It's all about keeping the sim-settings sensible. I'm now running the same system with a Reverb G2 again without issues on the same settings. Updating to a 4090 system next week, but for the past few years, I've enjoyed VR so you're 100% correct.

I have a great time with my 2060super and my quest2. Took a long time to tweak it properly and sift through the mountains of outdated info to get it running beautifully, but it taught me a bunch which has helped implement into other vr games such as f1 22 which is also super demanding. I started with an i3 12100 and while it worked, it was the limiting factor. Upgraded to an i5 13600k and that has really helped. Now my gpu is my limiting factor but it runs great and I'm happy!

When you showed your settings, it looked very similar to mine! Still running an Intel i5 (9th gen) with Nvidia 2060 graphics card and Quest 2 (in total about £1000 I paid at the time) and runs smooth enough for me to still enjoy the sim and get that VR experience. Been the same set up since 2020. Right enough sim itself cost me £70, then yoke £130, pedals £85, planes from marketplace £100's etc 😂

I also have a 2060 GPU but I have an i7 10700 CPU and I struggle to run VR. I'm also using a Quest 2. Every so often my performance will drop, almost to a halt, and in the OpenXR dialogue it shows that I'm GPU bound when this happens. I know I'm asking a lot, but would you have any idea why this is happening? It's like it's overheating and throttling back. My graphic settings are all quite low too. I have no issues running it in flat mode, on a mixture of high and ultra settings.

@@musefan12345 Not really sure. Maybe Steve would have an idea. I'd say with mine about 90% of the time it is fine i.e. get about 25 - 30 fps in VR although very occasionally it will drop to around 3 - 5 fps during a flight i.e. sudden noticeable lag and becomes almost unusable. This doesn't happen very often and I notice when it does it seems to happen more often with certain planes e.g. I have a Sting S4 from marketplace where this happens more often than not. As far as thermal throttling, my GPU seems to do this within about 1 - 2 minutes of playing MSFS regardless. It only has a single fan and a large heatsink and thermal throttles at 83c very quickly after booting up MSFS. I noticed this early on in my PC's life and thought I won't be getting much life out of my GPU at this rate but seems to be the default for this card and still going 3 years later!

@@musefan12345 When you say performance grinds to a halt, do you mean like sub 10fps? And then after a while it returns to a playable value by itself? I have a quest 2 and I have this issue, it's very annoying. After a lot of experimenting I think it's to do with VRAM becoming too full, so I try to reduce settings that use lots of VRAM.

I have a i9 12900k and 3090Ti, but think the biggest factor is internet bandwidth!! I have to use 4G home broadband and when the connection is sub 20mbs i can see a massive drop compared to 25mbs plus. Previously had a 1080Ti and i7700k and dont see much difference offline. So i believe the major factor is bandwidth and not hardware. Dont have VR anymore but would like to get back in to it.

I've just built a VR system for a friend specifically to keep the budget down, and they're happily flying in MSFS with an i5 10600k, 32gig and a 3060ti (all second hand) and a samsung odyssey plus, a logitech x52 hotas and Nextlevel racing FGTlite, it all came in under £700. So an immersive experience doesn't have to cost the earth. You just need to wheel and deal a bit and have realistic expectations whilst you save for a newer bit of kit.

I appreciate you for doing this, even though you're gonna quit VR-simming and become a full time dog groomer. I know there are still MANY users out there with medium and low specs that still would love to have a go. But you'd be hard pressed to find a single video out there nowadays that have lower specs then let's say a 3090 and a 10700. I'm on a 3090 and an i7 13700k and I'm happy as a cucumber with that, but I was also very happy with my previous setup with a 3070 and a 10700k, averaging 35-40 fps. Great video, Steve. But from what you're saying the Quest was a bad choice based on my current GPU. I struggle with performance, my sim will drop to has low as 5 FPS, for a few minutes, and then will climb back up to 30 FPS. Then a few minutes later it will start doing the same thing. OpenXR is telling me that I'm GPU limited whenever this is happening. Am I missing some trick, or am I just going to have to fork out on a new GPU or even a headset? Or both lol

Thank you so much for addressing different budgets. From your perspective, if someone had X amount of funds, what would you prioritize? GPU, headset, motion rig? Is it better for example to go with a 3070ti upgrade (coming from a 2060 in my case) and use the unspent cash for a motion rig? Or put all the cash in a 4090 and put off the motion rig for a couple of years? Same with headset - stick with current G2 and prioritize a 4090 or a cheaper GPU and motion rig?

You probably already know this - but commercial flight sims don’t have a huge amount of visual detail - what they do have is super smooth graphics; and I say from many hours in commercial sims, the immersion is very much there without all the detail. Smoothness is probably more important than fancy graphics. (That said, I do very much enjoy both)! 😉

There isn’t a magic bullet for.VR flight settings. Everyone will eventually find their ideal compromise between detail and frame rates. Tweaking settings can’t and won’t generate additional computing power, you need a very expensive graphics card and a very expensive processor and even when you get those you will have to make compromises. The hardware doesn’t as yet exist that will give us 90 FPS in the G2 in all situations. I’ve just invested in an RTX 4090, it’s brilliant, my processor is 10700k and I have a G2. I can run MSFS at high settings in VR, using TAA and I have the render at 100% in open composite. Without MR I get around 45 fps, flying over cites, dropping to mid to low 30s. For the smoothest flying experience I enable MR and fix it a30 FPS. It’s the best and sharpest VR experience I’ve had in MSFS. In 2D it’s a different story, I used the optimum settings suggested in G Force experience, that defaults to DLSS. I’m getting 100+ FPS over the cites and 130-160 over the likes of the Grand Canyon, graphics are pin sharp. An incredible up lift from the new card and DLSS 3.0. DCS has seen a similar but more modest improvement, multithreading helping here as well, I’ll stick with MR and 45 FPS, even though my GPU is running at 10-12ms for most of the time. IL2 the FPS has some pretty wild swings, from a steady 90 down to 60-65. I can fix the rate at a rock steady 45 using MR in open composite but with more headroom than. I had with my RTX 3080., but I’ll just have to put up with the occasional ghosting. With a more powerful card there is lot less tweaking and that’s a good thing. DLSS in MSFS is a real game changer for me, also generates a lot less fan activity on the new card.

So here is what i think. My current setup is: i5- 13600kf, 32gb ddr5, m2 ssd and evga rtx 3060 xc 12gb. Link cable is giniun oculus $80 cable. What i see is this. If i go to fs2020 settings and make all settings at maximum then i can see my video card is maxed at 100% and of course with 100% cant work correctly. Game quality in quest 2 will be amazing! 😀 but slow rendering coz of video card at 100%. To some how fix it i need to lower Rendering slider in fs2020 vr settings. Maximum you can do 200% for rendering and for me to avoid bitrate issues jerking etc... i need to lower to at least 90% on that slider and this still will have some issues very often. To remove issues it needs to start at 80. But then what is the purpose of using vr if u can't do 200%???? After u saw quality at 200% resolution and then going to much lower resolution 80-90, it is like heaven and earth difference. With 200 all so real, sharp and pretty and 80-90, even 100 honestly is JUNK. Why would you look at bad pictures on your house wall if u have super pictures to hang and watch. Jyst with fs2020 to be honest not possible to run it at 200% resolution and do not have signal issues distortion etc in quest. It is sad. If i am wrong please do tell and teach me , i love flying and in vr is like new life!!!! And i see all vr videos do not have renderingat 200 so what they see in vr is junk
