Grew up in Ludlow Park, went to 27 for K-6, graduating there in '73. We played ball at Fay Field, went to Tibbits all the time, Cross County, Central Ave. My God.....😥 but thank you. It's a tough old industrial city like so many in the northeast but with some really nice pockets, mid-century suburbia, and endless apartments like in the burrows. There is natural beauty along the Hudson, views of the Palisades. Nothing you could imagine in another region of the country, so varied, so war-torn, the only home I know, looking backwards at 60.

Crazy, I went to 27. Graduated in like 2009 or 2010. I feel like graduation was long ago for me. Weird feeling knowing I was still so long after you. God bless.

Please keep in mind that 90% of the locations shown were of downtown Yonkers in the Getty Square area (makes sense since it probably was the most photographed part of Yonkers), which was extremely hard hit by the 1970s and 1980s and has only partly gentrified, and that’s mostly by the river and the YO train station. I am grateful that one of the non-downtown shots showed the building I grew up in.

You did a tremendous job on this project. I am most particularly interested in the 1957 Neppherhan Avenue / New Main Street / Health Center Building photo. I have been unsuccessfully searching (more than 10 years) for a photo of the buildings located across from the Health Center where I grew up. I lived at 96 Nepperhan Avenue and would greatly appreciate the source of this photo so that I can get a copy. Thank you!!! Linda

I originally posted that Then/Now contrast on the SoYo Sunset message board, link below. The old photo appeared in the Herald Statesman, Dec. 20, 1957. You can download it from SoYo Sunset. If you need the undoctored precolorized version, or a link to the online PDF copy of that old newspaper page at the Fulton History site, you will have to email me at chalushes@gmail.com so I can mail you the undoctored version and/or the Fulton link (too long for this format). I am necessarily protective of my own Now photos. If you need to use the Now photo, please attribute it to me, Michael Stephen Gross. The old photo is of course not mine and I have no rights to it to give or withhold. Meanwhile, go to SoYo: www.tapatalk.com/groups/soyosunset/looking-west-on-nepperhan-avenue-at-new-main-stree-t4873.html#.VIpA3nvkcRo

The old downtown area and much of the S.W. have declined and it shows. But we should consider that many of the old photos were taken for real estate and business promotion purposes and were therefore biased toward showing Yonkers at its then best. If they had been muckrakers and had instead taken photos of the horrible slums at Chicken Island and around upper Riverdale Avenue, we would not find those scenes much nicer than what is there now.

I was born and raised there too... Yonkers General Hospital on Nepperhan Av. in 1947. Schooled at Halsted School on North Broadway. What happened to younkers is: They started to build low income housing and lots of it in South Yonkers and indigent deadbeats from all over the country came to live there. I saw it happen.

Go to the SoYo Sunset site (find it with Google), open the SoYo Snaps forum, and use the search mechanism to find photos of the streets you need. The basic photos will be recent but for some of the streets they will be paired with older photos (1954 and sometimes later decades) from the city's tax office. ***If you have only a few specific addresses in mind we can cut through the crap -- tell me the addresses and I'll find what I have and send it.***
