This is so lovely. The orchestration and the drama make you listen again and again. RIP Franco Corelli.

Gorgeous singing by two of the best of all time. One should not criticise their French, since the human voice was surely not meant to sing sustained notes on French nasals! With Massenet's "lovesick cat" orchestral sounds in the background, one can only admire the efforts of the singers.

Great performances as usual. I shouldn’t say this because I’m a guy but he is way too handsome in the first picture.

Quelles voix... mais hélas, quel français...! Au fait, n'est-ce pas au cours de ces représentations que Ch Ludwig a rencontré son 2° mari, Paul-Emile Deiber, metteur en scène? Quel progrès depuis!

Please, just listen to the music and their singing. The French are not experts in Italian language, either.

@@judithbereczky4114 I have no lesson to receive on that point. Christa Ludwig herself explained, many years later, that she was ashamed to have sung in such an horrible french. BTW, it is during those rehearsals that she met the french metteur en scène Paul Emile Deiber. She married him, lived in Paris with him and learned a wonderful, very fluent french language. She was herself very demanding on that point, and we could hear her saying many beautilful things about french language. Correlli, unfortunately, never improved his french.

@@matthieudegott3154I never said that I disagree with you concerning the French pronunciation of these singers. My point was that listening to these two titans of opera, for me the bad pronunciation is secondary to their beautiful singing. For me this music is heavenly and their voices are sublime and I don't listen to their pronunciation. I love everything French, I think that the French language is the most beautiful language on earth, but it is true, too, that French people don't pronounce other languages that well, either, especially English (one has to come to an other country before his/her 14th birthday or so, to have a correct pronunciation). I'm Hungarian and came to this country when I was a about 30 years of age, and speak English well, but after 45 years in this country, as soon as I get to know somebody new, I get right away the question where do you come from? My pronunciation is the pronunciation of my native country. As I said, I love France (I love the most Italy and France) and I spent almost a year in Southern France when I was 24 years old studying there and spoke fairly well, but always with an accent. These two artists were mature people when they became famous singers, so it was difficult for them to learn well to be ablate sing with less accent. Also, some people have better talent for languages, I mean to learn properly with little or no accent, as others. I'm especially sensitive about Franco Corelli, since he was my most beloved singer since I was 17 years old and still think that he is among the three or four best tenors in the history of opera. He had everything in his voice, everything in his looks, except good French pronunciation. I love French opera very much and am happy that there are some arias (and duets) with Corelli. So I don't disagree with you about Corelli's bad French pronunciation, but for me this is secondary for such artists as these two.
