Lifelong Boston Bruins fan here. I lived in NYC for 20 years and had an apartment right across the street from a bar on East 89th Street, where the boys brought the Stanley Cup around 2 in the morning the night they won it. Unfortunately I was asleep but read about it later. What a great team - and a great win for the city!

Question: Would you rather have lost in 94 with the same team before the deadline but win a lot of Stanley Cups in the years following with the young talent or would you go through with the trades that Keenan made to win the cup in 94 but not win the Stanley Cup since then?
@amazinmets84394 жыл бұрын
There's no guarantee the Rangers would have won in 94 or beyond that without those deals. Messier was getting older and teams like Colorado and Detroit were on the rise. Lemieux came back to hockey and he always gave the Rangers problems in the playoffs. It was the right time to go for it. I'm happy with the 1 cup we won. Until they buy another team (like they bought Edmonton) to win the Cup for them?
@10.11.95 жыл бұрын
@@billjones3497 The Rangers didn't "buy" a damn thing. The players they acquired in '94 - and just prior to - came at a premium cost. The whole "Rangers bought the Cup" in 1994 is farcical. Their two biggest stars on that team were homegrown. Three of their four Russian stars were drafted by NYR (Zubov, Kovalev, and Nemchinov), while Karpovtsev (traded from Quebec) played every game of his rookie season with the Rangers. Rangers overpayed for Anderson, Tikkanen, MacTavish, Noonan, and Matteau. Larmer, Lowe, Beukeboom, Olczyk, Healy and Wells were fair trades. Gilbert and Graves were free agent acquisitions. Obviously, the biggest player transaction between NYR and EDM was Mark Messier. Let's not forget that the player going back in that deal was Bernie Nicholls, who scored 475 goals and is considered by many to be worthy of HHOF status. Steven Rice was a top NHL prospect in 1991 but didn't fulfill his potential. Like I said, the Rangers most certainly *did not* "buy" the Stanley Cup in '94, and paid dearly for that championship for the next decade, which included seven consecutive seasons of missing the playoffs.
