As requested this is how I've undervolted my MSI GS66 Stealth personally. Sorry the video is so long, just felt like there was a decent amount to cover.
My System:
MSI GS66 Stealth
Intel I7-10750H
RTX 2060
16GB Ram
Repasted with Arctic MX-4 thermal compound
Current undervolt settings
CPU: -115.2 Voltage Offset
GPU Locked at 1320-1400MHz
If you guys have any additional questions please feel free to ask!

@@sages7328 so I’ve found it super depends on what game you’re playing. I think nexus states this in a later video where he expands on what he found a bit more. Basically I almost always disable turbo and run my undervolt at about 102.5. That seems to make the biggest difference for me. I also undervolt the cpu cache as well as the core. I saw undervolting the cache helps out some online but I’m not sure it’s made a difference for me. Basically you just want to make sure your undervolt isn’t crashing your pc. If you follow nexus’ video he does a pretty good job explaining it.

when you were in task manager, i noticed that you didn't have the second integrated gpu enabled. So assuming you are in dgpu mode, how is the battery life?, the rtx 2060 will draw considerably more power at idle. Do you always have optimus disabled? Also great video, not many people realise that manufacturers like msi prefer max performance compared to thermals and noise, i've also been tweaking my gs66. As i will travel to uni a lot with the laptop in the future, ive made 2 profiles in throttlestop, an ac profile and a battery profile. The battey profile has turbo boost disabled and optimus(MShybrid) enabled, imo 2.6ghz is more than enough for daily use such as browsing, youtube, netflix..., it increases battery life quite a bit, also considering it uses the integrated graphics. The AC profile(as i usually game on AC power) has turbo enabled but set to 3.5ghz max, i found it to be the sweet spot for performance for any video editing, code compiling i do. Since you video edit, i highly recommend you to create a profile with turbo on, it greatly improves rendering times. Also turbo helps with the 1% low performance in games, you may not notice it it demanding games, but in competitive games like overwatch, fortnite, csgo, valorant and warzone even, turbo boost stops the dips in FPS when suddenly a dense scene appears, etc.. As you mentioned the PL1 in this laptop is set to 65 watts, which introduces way too much heat for a 400Mhz gain in my case, the stock intel ratings are at 45W. these power levels state how much power the cpu can use given the thermals are below the limit, which is 95 for the gs66(you can change this in the bios, ive set mine to 90), PL1 and PL2 as far as i know is the max power the cpu can use in 28 second intervals given PROCHOT isnt hit. (PROCHOT is a fancy term for thermal limit in the bios) the intel reccomended are 65 for pl1 and 134 for pl2, however that makes the cpu ridiculously hot, intel mainly did this to try and match the performance of the 7nm AMD renoir chips, but 65w at 14nm+++ is just a joke, intel need to move on but thats a whole another argument. What i use is the 9th gen intel chips are set to, the difference between 9th gen and 10th gen is nothing but these limits and maybe some structural differences. for 9th gen it was 45W for PL1 and 54 for PL2. however these rarely push temps beyond 80 degrees so i set mine to 45w and 65w. once again i appreciate the video as not many people who haven't done as much research and just pass off msi as a shit brand for having bad thermals, as far as i know, msi is the only manufacturer which still allows you to undervolt and control the cpu as you want, none of the others do. Hope you find your optimal settings and enjoy your laptop, thanks for reading my essay haha.

That was a lot of information, I really appreciate you taking the time to type all that! I really only use my laptop while gaming or video editing so I tend to keep it plugged in and on dedicated graphics a majority of the time, though if I ever do plan on using it while traveling and not gaming or doing intensive tasks I would switch to hybrid mode. I do however keep the battery charging to 50-60% to prolong the life of the battery since I do keep it plugged in while using it. Yeah I’ve used MSI in the past and was really put off by the heat and noise, but if you take just a little time you can really tweak them to do anything you want or need, I’m extremely happy with my GS66 Stealth so far. 3.5Ghz for turbo sounds like a good idea, I’ve been doing the 4.0 and stepping down for each core by .1 but I think a solid 3.5 would help with fluctuation. It’s sad intels basically forced such high power right out of the box, they just run way to hot for comfort, but I guess that’s what they get for cutting corners to compete with AMD in that regard. Thanks so much for your comment and the feedback and information, it helps a lot!

Hi, just watched your video. About to get my GS66 in RTX 2070 Max-Q. So I have a couple of questions if you don't mind answering. 1.) Which program do you recommend me using? I'm not a tech savvy person and all I want is to just decrease CPU and GPU temps, so should I be using XTU or Throttlestop? 2.) Will either of the aforementioned programs interfere with Dragon Center or Afterburner (like changing profiles and fan speeds in Dragon Center) , and should I be worried about that? 3.) If I'm using XTU for undervolt, do I need to boot up this program every time I turn my laptop on? I understand that with Throttlestop, I need to launch it for every boot up. 4.) How effective is the undervolting so far, and do you recommend undervolting? 5.) How were you able to display CPU and GPU usage and temps when you were gaming? Thank you in advance!
@NexusTechRepair
@NexusTechRepair 4 жыл бұрын
I’d recommend Throttlestop just because it’s a lot more in-depth and effect. You can also setup a boot up process in task scheduler to have it automatically launch at boot so you never have to think about it. Throttlestop won’t interfere with dragon center, or the profiles in there to my knowledge. If I’m being completely honest I don’t think undervolting helps much at all, if you see in my videos the first two panels one is without undervolt and one is with undervolt and the thermal difference is nonexistent. I personally use Throttlestop and MSI afterburner to undervolt and control both the cpu and gpu and you can use riva statistics which comes with afterburner to monitor all the temps and cores and frequencies

Thanks for the video Nexus, really helpful to me. I have a question, if I disable the turbo boost in the throttlestop, do I still need to change the turbo ratio limits in the FIVR? Or does the ratio limit only have the effect if I enable the turbo boost? And what does the MSI afterburner do? I think I still not really understand at that point. Thank you
@NexusTechRepair
@NexusTechRepair 4 жыл бұрын
Correct, you don’t have to worry about the turbo ratio limits in FIVR if you disabled turbo boost, they only affect if you have turbo boost enabled. MSI afterburner is what you use to adjust the frequency of your GPU, so it’s effectively throttlestop for the GPU, with less options.

At 1:08, he said "the option to undervolt was greyed out in the latest version of XTU, and that Throttle Stop did not work. So it looks like, (like most other laptops with 10th gen chips), that they cannot be undervolted. Please correct if I am off on this one, as I am looking now at AMD processors which run cooler (but has so many drawbacks, only available on the cheaper model builds, gtu not as powerful as nvidia, etc). Undervolting realistically only takes a few minutes and the lower temperatures will really increase the longevity of the device and it’s hardware. High temperatures can really cause a lot of wear and tear depending on how often you use your system and how long you use it per time. I’d really suggest putting the undervolt in place and then you don’t have to worry about it anymore. The CPU is rated for 100C of thermal headroom, and then it starts to thermal throttle which is absolutely will on the 10th processors in this thin of a system.

@NexusTechRepair 4 жыл бұрын
I use a solid lock at 1400MHz personally, I find it works really well and keeps temperatures really good for the GPU. That being said, I haven’t noticed even with it at a full curve to 1900MHz the gpu getting to hot, they did a great job cooling it in this system.

Either one is fine, but throttlestop gives more control over the fine tuning in my opinion and once you set up task scheduler after you’ve got it tweaked how you want it, you basically never have to mess with it again. At the end of the day you’re limiting the performance of your CPU by turning turbo boost off, so you will lose some sort of FPS, but the trade off from the reduction in heat is well worth like 5-10FPS

@NexusTechRepair
@NexusTechRepair 4 жыл бұрын
Turbo Boost Power Limits. “Turbo Boost Long Power Max” is known as PL1 and “Turbo Boost Short Power Max” is known as PL2. Both numbers are in watts. Turbo Time Limit is the number of seconds your CPU is allowed to operate at PL2 before dropping down to PL1. Turn off Turbo Boost Short Power Max, which makes PL1 unlimited. Set Turbo Boost Long Power Max to a very high number.

With undervolting it doesn’t have thermal issues. Without undervolt it’ll stay around 95-100C while gaming in the CPU, but the physical feel of the device will stay really comfortable to touch even cool in areas because the fans work really well, but with that comes tremendously loud fan noise. With a simple undervolt the thermals come down to the 60s-70s while gaming and fan noise is much more quiet.

I have the exact same model except it that it has the 2070. When you undervolted it did you see an increase in battery life ? This seems to die faster than the Razar blade and that is considering I put it in maximum battery saver and reduced the frame rates.

To be honest I haven’t tested battery life on mine yet. I’ve been testing frame rates and thermals with it plugged in for best performance.
