Thank you Tech Cemetary for these videos. Due to your detailed videos, I was able to completely repair one of my two 980Tis...and so far keep them out of the landfill. I think I can repair the other but it will require more extensive work. My EVGA 980Ti (based on FE PCB) had a short on the memory power phase rail (12V from PCI), due to the lowside mosfet shorting to ground. I just had to replace the lowside mosfet and the choke but I ended up also replacing the highside mosfet too just to be cautious since the lowside feeds back into the highside. I have a Gigabyte Windforce 980 Ti G1 that I'm still trying to repair. It's seems to have BGA damage on the GPU core or damaged VRAM from what I can only guess was aggressive overclocking/overvolting from the previous owner. So...replacing all the VRAM and if that does'nt work, it's then the CPU core which needs reballing. I will have to use a preheater and hit it from the top and bottom to get both the core and the carrier. Wish me luck...

What about using a wire instead of a resistor.
@69flyman

You could use a wire. I think the resistors are used mainly for streamlining the production of boards. Cost effective for robots to put them on as opposed to wires.

For a 3070 Gaming X Trio, again, what the heck are MSI making us pay for? Such a pretty card, but they’re legit giving you nothing more than what’s required to make it turn on.
@VintageCR
@VintageCR 3 жыл бұрын
well.. in idiotic language, you only need the Nvidia chip on the pcb. but ofcourse there is no way to 'turn it on' and make use of it, thats why you get this massive pcb build around it so your motherboard can utilize the nvidia chip where it sees fit.
@dainluke
@dainluke 3 жыл бұрын
@@VintageCR Haha what I meant is that the PCB is barebones. Here where I live there’s a major stigma against cards from ‘lower tier’ vendors and an enthralment with stuff from MSI and ASUS. Essentially I’m annoyed with the fact that people purchase cards merely by looking at the cooler design, but if you peel off the pretty shroud you see how bare that card actually is. It’s essentially just the minimum safe power delivery with the minimum safe amount of capacitance. It also links up with all the angry 30-series Gaming … Trio owners complaining about their cards having horrible BIOS limits. Pretty much down to the fact that sticking a +20% onto this card’s factory VBIOS wouldn’t even be a smart idea. I made a similar comment on a Ventus 2080 repair because it just astonished me that that’s what they are actually giving you. I look at PCB pictures from time-to-time but I don’t really do it as a rule and I just find it interesting that MSI elect to sell these amazing looking cards with such awful PCBs. I guess the Gaming X Trio’s are supposed to be ‘MSRP’ cards so maybe it’s ok? Palit’s GameRock cards sell for the same or less than the Trio cards and the power delivery, capacitance and overclocking ability on those cards blows the Trio out of the water. Yet so many people choose to shit on them because they look cheap. I see it so often where I live and I guess I’m just ranting because it frustrates me to see people paying for a worse product because it’s packaged nicely.
@VintageCR
@VintageCR 3 жыл бұрын
@@dainluke i do agree on the fact you should never buy a certain card just because the cooler design looks amazing. or the fact that the outer shell of the card looks like candy. because candy is good. no its not. thats simply poor judgement and means the customer doesnt know a lot about tech. in particular about a gpu. Just like you i like to find out what the pcb looks like (before i buy it / if at all) if it looks plain or "under crowded" or i see certain parts used on the pcb i dont like, i usually skip go next no matter how awsome the card looks. because in the end, i can make the card fit my entire system.. without choosing a poorly made card. but you are right about what card makers give you when you weight it against what you paid for it. there are times i question them, why would they ever sell this to the public when it truly runs on bare minimums when they could clearly put less effort into cooler design and looks and put some more into actual beefy pcb design.. but then again, who am i? im just a pleb looking for what suits my own needs, the card im looking for is out there somewhere. so.. in a way i can understand it, but also still kinda why? Why would they in this day n age still give certain cards to the public. Also fun fact, i have never had an MSI branded item fail on me, some might say MSI is cheap or poorly made because most of their stuff looks kinda cool but to my knowledge they use some of the best parts on their pcb's where its needed and use less quality where its not needed to balance it out. with failing i mean make the tech/item unusable. where last year i had an ASUS card im not going to say which one, i may have pushed it a little bit too far in terms of overclocking but the card basically is out of order now.. it does nothing but shut my system back down upon turning it on lol. to the point it also wrecked my seasonic psu.
@gergelyfiala4756
@gergelyfiala4756 3 жыл бұрын
MSI Gamings are not bad from an average users perspective. High MSRP and power throttle plagues the entire Ampere series and you can buy a better card for the same money, the problem with said card is availability.
