You just blew my third eye wide tf open. I never even considered how close the doll-making process was to embalming a body... I'd go a step further and say the process is close to taxidermy, (the same way the actresses have their dogs stuffed...?) You cut them open, drain them of all their previous lifeblood, stuff them with something new, and make all the cosmetic adjustments you need, and then set them in new clothes...

In the book right before she escapes, Coraline sees her real parents waiting for her in the doorway but then she notices that everything switches right before she reaches it. She decides not to question it. However, the author (Neil) states the moral message is that you can overcome evil so I'm still confused.

Other fun details: Other Father's entire song is a warning to Coraline, the only way he can think of to try and tell her what's going on. In the Other dining room there are silhouette portraits of three children, representing the previous victims. And lastly, something not mentioned by the movie but in the book, is that Other Mother doesn't control the tunnel. She found it, it acts on its own, _and she is terrified of it._

When the mother screams, “I’ll die without you!” That shit scare the crap out of me when I was kid, gave me nightmares, and now it’s one of my favorite scenes in any movie. The voice actor did a very good job, and so did the stop motion animators, the imagery of the door just getting closer and closer is fucking terrifying!

@@jimin6813 For me it’s the way she screams it. She’s not simply saying it she’s screaming it, viscerally, and the imagery of the door getting closer and closer, the green light and the dark tiny claustrophobic tunnel. Those things combined just make for a really scary moment.

I made a comment on another video about how I theorized Coraline did escape but still sent the key back to the other mother. Here's my thought process: 1. The parents aren't really acting any different after they come back. The biggest reason they were neglectful in the beginning of the movie was because of their job, which they finished while in the snow globe. I think we've all been in a place where you neglect other things in favor of 1 thing. The best example sadly being an addiction. Whether it's work, drugs or the famous World of War Crack people have been shown to be dedicated to something to satisfied and forgo other responsibilities. So, their behavior change is more of "We're sorry for not being around" then suspicious. Still not healthy but that's humans for yah. 2. The other mother is confident and with good reason. She's had 3 victims and none of them have gotten away. So, she's gotten pretty cocky. If she hadn't then: 3. She would have just snatched Coraline that 1st night rather than wait for her to come willing.... though maybe it's the willingness of the victim she's after🤔 4. The cat can talk in the other world but not in the real world. He can't talk in the last part of the movie. 5. The other world is meant to be a storybook world where everything's prefect, including the weather. Weathers happening in the ending. 6. the ghost children are set free. If this was all the other mothers doing, she wouldn't even let Coraline know about them. Thinking your alone is scarier than knowing there were previous victims. 7. I'm sure some people are saying "the other mother can reshape things" and i agree but you're missing 2 things: A: She can't MAKE things. Even that moment of her copying Coraline's real mom was her already having the look down pat. B: How long has it been since her last meal? I wouldn't be surprised if she was running low on power. She even said so herself "I'LL DIE WITHOUT YOU" But hey, that's just a theory. A CORALINE THEORY Thanks for reading.

yup thank you for this. i never really supported the theory that she stayed in the other world simply bc the other mother NEEDS to see what coraline hates about her life so she could “fix” it. Also ik she wasn’t shopping with the doll but i’m willing to bet that it still knew either bc it was actually in that scene but inside of their shopping bag or something (unlikely but whatever) or she complained to it about not getting the clothes after getting home. Or there was that time she brought up the gloves right before her real mother left for groceries (she was in the house but i can’t recall the details of that scene so idk if the doll was there).

I actually saw something about Coraline, and why she’s in this bright yellow rain coat and everything is dull and depressing. It is all because Coraline is a child with an active imagination; her parents have moved her to this new house that she doesn’t like, with weird neighbours and nothing to do so she sees the world like that while her imagination makes up a world with bright colours, and a happy family, and stuff that makes her happy. It all comes back to the other mother making her perfect world, which in turn connects to her imagination. And yet, when Coraline starts to get creeped out and realise that the other world isn’t as brilliant as she thought the colours start to fade. It’s such an interesting and amazing concept to think about, and my hat goes off to the creators cause this was truly a piece of art.

One of the best things about this film is that you don't know it's a horror film going into it. Sure, it has some of those vibes from the intro, Wybie being silent, the cat's warnings, and the recreations of the apartment residents are eerie in a way, but it's mostly fun and games. Then the button scene happens. And the tone changes completely. Now we realize this world isn't a candy store of wonder and delight - it's a mousetrap.

10:06 This is my theory actually. Outside the Pink Palace, the Beldam created "3 wonders," she has 3 children's eyes. I think their eyes give her the ability to generate more world, hence she was able to create 3 wonders out of their 3 sets of eyes. Why else would she keep the eyes around? And keep one pair of eyes in each of the "wonders"? (One in Bobinsky's place, one in the actresses' place, and one in the garden) I think the eyes are hidden in plain sight in each location because they act like batteries, like generators, powering their respective locations. That's why when they were removed, their land unravels and all that's left by the end is the Pink Palace.

Welp. That "Never made it out" theory is actually one I'd never heard before, and when I tell you it's been rattling around in the back of my brain for the past few days?? Bruh. That idea is sending chills down my back fr. I never realized how plausible it could be, what with the room changing around her and all that. That being said, here are a few counterpoints I came up with to that theory -so I could sleep at night again- - Her mom takes her to the store. We've seen that the Other Mother's world is rather puny, and she can likely only create a "Wonder" for each pair of children's eyes she has. Unless we are to believe that her powers being limited was a trick all along and she can actually generate _infinite terrain,_ I believe that generating an entire city full of buildings and people would be beyond her capabilities. - The ghost of the children visit Coraline in the end, thanking her for saving them and reiterating that she's still alive and the only danger is that she has the key on her. Unless we are to believe that A) the ghost children were fake all along or B) The Other Mother can _alter people's dreams,_ then Coraline _must_ have transported the children's eyes out of the Other World by leaving herself. - The Ghost children claim that the Other Mother only locked them in their room and "ate up their lives" _AFTER_ they agreed to let her sew the buttons. So unless we believe one of the previous catches, the Other Mother would have no reason to keep Coraline in the Other World if she couldn't actually take her eyes and eat her life. - My opinion is that making Coraline _believe_ that she went home is too elaborate a plan for the Other Mother to have enacted. Not that she _couldn't_ enact it, it's just that... why would she? The other 3 children admitted that they willfully returned for more and willfully agreed to have the buttons sewn in, so why wouldn't she just let Coraline go home to her drab normal life and then return to the better world at night of her own free will? Why would the Other Mother expect this that this child would be any different from the last 3 and not just take up her offer immediately? Hence, the only night she _didn't_ return Coraline to her real room was the night Coraline rejected her and clearly planned to run away without returning. - Working off that last point, IF the Beldam WAS rearranging the furniture the whole time, then after Coraline initially rejects the buttons, the Beldam could've just... rearranged the furniture again that night and let Coraline believe _then and there_ that she made it home, end of story. She never would've had to worry about the ghosts being found or any extra annoyances, the problem of Coraline trying to run away would be solved. Unless maybe she wanted another shot at convincing Coraline to let her sew the buttons, but then if she NEEDS to sew the buttons in then that once again begs the question: what point would she have in letting Coraline _believe_ she escaped if she's never gonna get to sew the buttons in and eat her life?

What happened when coraline first rejected the sew buttons in eyes trick actually was forced, because the beldam was hungry and clearly desperate to survive. The beldam could've sewn in the button eyes and trapped her there permanently, therefore why we see a picture of coraline have brown hair instead of blue. Or the beldam waits until she tricks coraline when she older making her think she needs glasses. By then fooling coraline into the buttons being placed in her eyes without fully knowing.

Furthermore, I think that Coraline _needs_ to give some sort of consent to have the buttons sewn in. Think about it, if the Beldam could just sew buttons into the eyes of anyone at all at any time, why bother with trying to please them and give them everything they want? She could've just taken Coraline's eyes the moment Coraline crawled into her dimension, end of story. Clearly she's luring them in for a reason, I think she can't take their eyes unless they give them away willingly. And further futhermore, I don't think the Beldam could've just kept her there "until she was older" because I think the Beldam is _hungry._ I think generating a whole world takes energy. We can see when she runs out of energy that the fake world starts to fade, the other father starts to melt into his original form (a pumpkin) and things don't work like they're supposed to. I think that, like any spider, there's only so long she can go without food. I don't think she has the energy to keep up that facade of a fake world for the rest of Coraline's life.

I was a timid child, and one day mum brought this dvd to me. Unfortunately, I was too curious for my own good and watched it to the end. I've always been creeped out by the opening scene where the Other mother took off the cotton stuffing (the child's soul?) from the doll, threw it away, turned around the doll's skin and then filled it with another stuffing of her choice. The sheer violence of that scene. I might be projecting a lot here, in fact I've never heard anyone talk about it, but I've always considered the Other Mother a sort of stand in for an abusive parent, who wants to make a puppet out of her own daughter, preying on her inexperience and guilt tripping her. It's incredible, how different people can get completely different ideas from the very same movie.

I remember reading the book when I was 12 or so with my own dad, and let me tell you the other father scene is NIGHTMARE FUEL. Coraline descends a spiral staircase into a stone basement with slick walls and moldy floors and the fight with the other father happens in this small, confined space as this thing basically melts before her.

So, about the mittens and the shop theory, if you look close enough, when the mother says "Maybe she should buy them then." you can see a woman through the window, which makes the same sing with her finger pointing to her eyes, just like the Beldam does when Coraline asks her for clues about her parents.

I feel so lucky that i saw this in theaters i was SO hyped by this movie with how freaky it is. My mom wasn't prepared and told me afterwards how horrified she was by the scene of the ghost kids. I didn't even flinch but I def can understand her being freaked out. I love this movie so much 🖤

Watching Coraline is so satisfying because I have vivid nightmares since childhood where I would pop out in horror plot. The way she act is exactly how I act, not screaming or panicking. I would go full fight mode with the creatures in my dream while trying to wakes up. And I too believe SHE IS STILL TRAPPED THERE.
