Especially since this was clearly more a beauty, style and sophistication contest as opposed to acting! Vivien was a true beauty who cut her teeth on the British stage and made what some consider a difficult transition to American film. Her body of work is phenomenal if you can get past her beauty. Also, Oscar winning actress Hattie McDaniel, one of her cast members in GWTW, should have been considered!

Again...Vivien Leigh being left out, not even in honorable mentions really bothers me. She won Oscars twice in leading roles completely in contrast in different decades, often regarded as one of the most beautiful actresses ever (back then the beauty was surely the status in Hollywood), won the role of Scarlett O'Hara (arguably one of the most famous female characters in one of the most prominent Hollywood films ever, which even Katharine Hepburn was desperate to take), and went through a pretty dramatic life till her death. I would put her in the top 5. How she's been underappreciated now is a shame.

I asked on a comment if she was here, you told me she is not, I was sure about it ! She was among the 3 best at least, she influnced so many great actresses who came later. She was so versatile, and could embody her roles like no one else. People just have a naive and outdated image of that era, they don't look at the actresses'performances, but they check if theire image fit their idea about "glamour". Stanwyck was very charming and classy, but she was beyond fashion and labels, she never played the game in Hollywood, that's way you can find a bit of her in today down-to-earth actresses like Susan Sarandon or Laure Dern who praises her.

I know there are plenty of comments with names the likes of Garbo, Myrna Loy, Jean Arthur, Barbara Stanwyck, (all faves of mine) etc etc etc. But the actresses they chose are all fabulous access points for newcomers to classic film. Watching their most iconic films would expose a newcomer to a slew of essential leading men, directors, genres, archetypes, etc. Aside from silent films, the actresses they chose really do represent the 30s to the mid-60s fabulously. I think most classic film fans were welcomed into the fold by one of these 10 ladies. Personally, being introduced to Audrey Hepburn first and subsequently her leading men and then her leading men's other films eventually lead me to discover the likes of Loy, Stanwyck, and Garbo.

Good grief how to narrow the list down to ten, so many wonderful actresses of that era. Obviously the list is subjective, as the question is…what credentials or qualifications provide the measuring stick to be among “the best”? Love Grace Kelly, every time she debuts that gorgeous face in “Rear Window” I fall for her all over again. Donna Reed is another personal favorite, something about her is so charming. Add Myrna Loy, Claudette Colbert & Doris Day who each had a smile that made one feel better. Maureen O’Hara should’ve been here as well as Natalie Wood, two more of my favorites. Never was a Katherine Hepburn fan but I respect her work. Rita was amazing, Marilyn was better than most people realize & Audrey was a beautiful person in every aspect. --something about the actresses of this time that I just do not see today. Maybe it was poise, a cultured grace & charm of the time that is all but absent today. Thanks for this list, good job

Elizabeth Taylor is #10 and Marilyn Monroe is #9? I at least expected them both to be in the top 5.🤦♂️

Agree with others below about Barbara Stanwyck... not even in the honorable mentions? That's clearly an oversight.

Bette shoukd be number 1. Remove Grace and Lana to honourable mentions, add Vivien Leigh and Doris Day into top 10. And bumb Judy up to number 2. 😊

Marilyn..... ehhh. There seem to be several others more deserving of a spot in the top 10 🤷

@Christian Soto lol calm down fan boy. My opinion counts as much as yours, so get over yourself. I must admit that it's amusing that you think your opinion is fact... awwww.

Grace Kelly? Liz Taylor? Audrey Hepburn? Lauren Bacall? Thought this lineup was about acting ability, not a fashion parade or beauty pageant. Judy Garland was primarily a musical performer, Mae West a comedian. Barbara Stanwyck is the most ridiculous omission. When directors as demanding as De Mille and Fritz Lang say you're the best, you're the best.

What do you think about Katharine Hepburn?
@esmeephillips58886 ай бұрын
@@WinterMelody12 Not my taste, and for most of her career not the public's either. A little too spiky and self-regarding; a faint air of 'look at me, a toney New England college girl trying to raise thespian standards in this crass Tinseltown'. I admire her up to a point, then the chilly breeze blows. Bette Davis had the same feelings about Hollywood, but she went for the burn in performance as Kate never quite did.

Grace Kelly had such a beautiful face, but Audrey Hepburn is and always gonna be my favourite classic actress for all time. Bette Davis is also a very gifted actress. Pd: I love Dorothy’s Judy and I think nobody could be a better Dorothy

I agree, Audrey Hepburn was magical. Grace Kelly was overhyped.

Barbara Stanwyck! Arguably the greatest actress who ever lived.

And could easily have been #1 on this list or any. Hedy Lamarr and Ms. Stanwyck Should've made this list. And, let's not forget Ava Gardner, Merle Oberon and Ida Lupino who went on to become a director/producer!

Before I even watched the video, I was sure that Katherine Hepburn was going to be No. 1! Such a talented actress that will never be topped!!❤ Wish she made a movie with Marlon Brando. Now that would be epic!!!

My Personal List But Top 5 1 Katharine Hepburn 2 Bette Davis 3 Audrey Hepburn 4 Ingrid Bergman 5 Marilyn Monroe
@eliseosaavedra70396 ай бұрын
If I were to make a list, it would be as follows: 1. Katharine Hepburn 2. Bette Davis 3. Ingrid Bergman 4. Elizabeth Taylor 5. Vivien Leigh 6. Judy Garland 7. Mae West 8. Joan Crawford 9. Audrey Hepburn 10. Barbara Stanwyck Honorable Mentions: Greta Garbo Sophia Loren Olivia de Havilland Shirley Maclaine Lauren Bacall The ranking of actresses 1-5 is non-negotiable, 6-10 can be rearranged. When I say greatest, I focus on their performances and impact on the industry.
