Re: The Great Wall of China shoot. Mr. Jay went on record recently saying that each shoot in China had to be scrutinized and approved by the Chinese government, who even went so far as to PULL THE TAPES FROM THE CAMERAS when they didn't like what was being filmed. So I guess if the government said it was fine and didn't think it was cultural appropriation (even though that shoot almost didn't happen; again Mr. Jay went on record about it), it's okay.

That’s bc that’s not what cultural appropriation is. Its been watered down, but it was never supposed to be about a native country’s ppl getting mad about other countries stealing their culture. Its a diasporic term (Chinese Americans, Black Americans, Korean Japanese). You don’t have to worry about someone using ur looks and culture to be exotic or for a joke and then ridiculing you for it or denying you opportunities when ur included in the majority. You worry about it bc you have to live with it in places that don’t accept you otherwise.

I actually think the bi-racial photo shoot was a celebration of the mix race. Although it didn't 100% reflect the true mix race descendants but at least after the show, i actually learned there are different bi-racial that actually exists in this world instead of calling someone who is mix race with dark skin as black or latino coz there are Chinese with darker skin & there are black descendants who actually have lighter skin. We should celebrate all & just put someone in a all fit all box as black or white or asian or Hispanic

As mixed-race Hawaiian myself I don't see the "Biracial Beauties" as being "black face", as many have done on that particular shoot. Throwing the words "black face" to any given moment diminishes the actual meaning and what that phenomenon entails. "Black face" is more than just changing ones color -but it's doing so in form of an insult as to show that the POCs, the black especially, are of lower status - and the biracial beauties photoshoot is not of that sort. That shoot is used to tell people of the history of the sugar cane plantation in Hawaii. None of those pictures and that episode in particular is used as an insult to us. One can deem call it as cultural appropriation - and it ould be seen as such but that particular shoot is so far from black face.

@Phoenix Girl That's our point though, because "blackface" is more than just painting one's color to play different culture. The essence of blackface is to overemphasize the features of the race ex: overdrawn mouths, the cornrows, the very dark skin, on top of acting insulting stereotypes to the end purpose of mocking and looking down at the race which that mixed race photoshoot was far from one. One can call it "cultural appropriation" but even then it's not even fully cultural appropriation. Using "blackface" every single time on situations like this loses the power and meaning of the word and it just becomes the word to find excuse for one finding offense.

I think you need to go back and rethink your saying of the multi cultural shoot being racist. The girls didn't just dress up in some random cultural attire. I would be willing to bet it was thoroughly researched and done with as much class and taste as possible. The models were asked to embrace different cultures, and thats what they did.
