"She wouldn't have believed me." I'm sure that Dorothy would have, Glinda, but then again, the entire movie would have been over in ten minutes flat.
@jujubee214110 күн бұрын
It was Glinda’s fault that the Wicked Witch was trying to kill Dorothy. Glinda told Dorothy to “stay tight inside the Ruby slippers” and “I’m afraid you made a very bad enemy of The Wicked Witch of the West”. Dorothy didn’t do that. Glinda did but you’re right; the movie would’ve ended right there. Even when I was a kid, I thought Glinda was the bad one.

The problem with Glinda in the movie is that the movie merged the characters of the two good witches together. The Good Witch of the North came to Munchkin land in the East from her own Purple Quadling Country at the beginning of the story at the request of the Munchkin people after the death of the Wicked Witch of the East. She'd been helping them the best that she could in their resistance against the Wicked Witch of the East. In the end of the book, Dorothy and friends have to journey far South from the Emerald City after the departure of the Wizard in his balloon, to Gilikin Country to seek the advice of Glinda, the Good, the greatest and most powerful witch in Oz. She doesn't intervene until Dorothy and her friends come directly to her to ask for help in person. It keeps the story in the novel going, but it drags out the resolution of the movie which wants to be wrapped up neatly in one act. The Good Witch of the North wasn't clear on the nature of the powers of the Silver Shoes but thought that those powers were safer with Dorothy rather than with the Wicked Witch of the West. When asked, Glinda the Good could consult her Magic Book and read all about them and their powers. The Wizard was doing his best to present a counterfeit version of Glinda's actual powers. The movie producers could have just had Billie Burke play both parts, wearing purple in the beginning and pink at the end. It's kind of implied that Margaret Hamilton plays both the Wicked Witch of the East and the Wicked Witch of the West. When we see Miss Gulch on her bicycle turn into a witch flying on a broomstick, she is supposed to be the Wicked Witch of the East who also gets caught up in the tornado along with Dorothy's house, which comes down on top of her and her ruby slippers.
@tammywebb128910 күн бұрын
Yeah, but get this: If Glinda had told her about the ruby slippers right after Dorothy got them, then Dorothy never would've helped the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. And, the Wicked Witch Of The West would still be alive
@J.P.Robles10 күн бұрын
That means that the whole movie was for nothing Whenever you’re writing a story you don’t ever want to do this The audience hates nothing more than being told that the story didn’t need to take place because it could have just as easily have ended earlier It doesn’t help that the scarecrow, the lion, and the scarecrow don’t need to be granted things by the wizard because they had all of what they wanted It is a nice way to end things but if you think about it it comes off as lazy writing

Maybe that is true in a movie but not in real life. For example, the police broke all kinds of rules when they decided the teenagers they arrested for rape (Central Park Five) were guilty. They did not allow them to have a lawyer present or call their parents and they treated them extremely harshly until they gave false confessions. Of course with those confessions (which the teenagers said were coerced) they were found guilty. Eventually DNA evidence proved they were innocent. In the meantime, the lives of five innocent children were ruined. Cheering people on who break the rules that are meant to safeguard our rights is never a good idea. And Dirty Harry only goes after a certain kind of criminal -- usually a person of color and definitely not someone in the corporate world. Dirty Harry would never go after Jeffrey Epstein.

Rhett is Scatlett's codependent spouse. When he leaves, he's breaking the cycle. Scarlett is dangerously delusional about whatever she fixates on (Ashley Wilkes, Tara, etc). What about the Mayor and the rest of the town council from Jaws and Jaws 2? In a previous watchmojo list, they argued that the shark only did what it did out of instinct (which is technically true, although real sharks don't attack humans as often as they do in the movies). Whereas the mayor and his equally greedy and criminally negligent cronies are all too willing to lie to themselves and others about the blatant danger and death of the first victim. And if that weren't bad enough, in the sequel, they fire Brody from being police chief because he was mistaken about spotting the new shark and firmly asserted how he could tell what a shark looked like due to his past experience (in both movies, he was established to be a good cop and family man who lived for that job, and never once caused even minor harm to a human being).

Are we not gonna mention that Scarlett and Rhett owns a slave? What's more evil than that?!
@DBat-sp1tp9 күн бұрын
Judging the past by today’s standards and not even realizing or acknowledging that human trafficking aka slavery is happening in your own country through the southern border 🤦🏽♀️. It’s easy to act virtuous today not even taking into account that if you were alive back then how you would have behaved.
@marilynsobel74148 күн бұрын
@@DBat-sp1tp That is not true. I mean, why do you think we had a Civil War? The southern states were the only ones that wanted to hold onto slavery. Northerners had opposed slavery for years and many helped with the Underground Railroad. Union soldiers fought to defeat slavery. I guess you need to study history. As for sex trafficking, no one is suggesting it is a good thing and it is illegal. Sadly it happens in many places. I just read a story about a girl in West Virginia who was trafficked by her own mother (to a policeman). That woman (and the police officer) went to jail. So these things are not comparable at all.
@throughthelookingglass59738 күн бұрын
@@DBat-sp1tp Not to mention that back then, slavery of any background was a method to get poor people to work and make a living. Some of the so-called "slavery" was a mutual contract between the slaves and the master so that each would benefit from one another. The busy master would have his home and family taken care of while he was away, and in turn, the slaves were provided shelter and food as payment. I'm not saying that serving someone against their will isn't evil, it is. But many slaveries of the past resemble the modern-day workforce, the only difference is we're paid with money and permitted to make a personal home rather than living with our employer. Also back then, not everyone mistreated their servants.

Grow up
@marilynsobel74147 күн бұрын
@@throughthelookingglass5973 That is not true! You may be thinking of indentured servants, who did have a contract with employers. You have obviously never heard of the Middle Passage, where thousands of people who were taken from their homes in Africa to be enslaved died or endured horrific conditions. Then there are the whippings, the chains, the separation of spouses and children once people were enslaved. People who escaped slavery were dragged back to plantations (no doubt to complete their so-called "contract"). If slavery wasn't real but just a contract why did Lincoln promulgate the Emancipation Proclamation? And isn't it weird that after the Civil War these "contracts" disappeared? I have no idea where you read this made-up information. There is absolutely no way in which the modern-day workforce resembles slavery. By the way, George Washington took such terrible care of the people he enslaved (dressing them in rags and giving them very little food) that his fellow slave owners criticized him for the way he mistreated them. I really can't believe anyone is passing along this BS. Clearly you are very poorly informed about history.

Grandpa Joe's behavior and the entire plot around Slugworth, is precisely what I never liked about this movie (and I've been told that Dahl himself was also furious about that. Being an author myself, I can relate). That is also why the later version (with Depp as Wonka) came more to my liking, as it's more consistent with the book, and the differences it does have are mostly not too far out of character (which Joe really was in the first movie). The dentist thing in the second movie die make me frown, yet Christopher Lee was brilliant (expecting less would be an insult to an actor like him), and the way Charlie solves that matter may not have been in the book, but does match what Charlie in the book would do as well, so all damage was a bit in control. Him dancing like that could be forgiven. When someone who thought he had nothing to live for suddenly sees a twist of events that gives him a new reason to live it's amazing how quickly some physical trouble can disappear as the will to fight it gets back, and that's exactly what happens when Charlie finds the final golden ticket. Never seen any of the other movies listed here (well, a few fragments of a few, but I cannot judge on fragments). Honorable mention (which I didn't see listed) perhaps to Albus Dumbledore from the Harry Potter franchize, although the books demonstrate that one better than the movies, although Snape's remark "You raised him like a pig for slaughter" makes a lot clear. He basically used his astounding manipulation skills in his fight against Voldemort even being willing to sacrifice Harry for the greater good. However, what may speak in his advantage was that he was not afraid to die himself for this course (loads of people who easily sacrifice people for the greater good can really show themselves a coward when they need to sacrifice themselves. At least Dumbledore was not).
@ThomasEhrlich-fc8nj8 күн бұрын
You have a great point. The adaptation with Depp and Highmore is by far more faithful to the source material, even showing how much Wonka cared about the Oompa Loompas' safety and well-being (he not only took them to safety from Loompaland, but promised to give them all the cocoa beans they wanted, which was the food they craved most). Even my late mother liked it better than the one with Gene Wilder.
@TheRealTricky7 күн бұрын
@@ThomasEhrlich-fc8nj Yup, I'd almost forgot about his trip to Loompaland, but the Depp-adaptation did show that where the Wilder-adaptation did not. As well as the story around that prince whose chocolate castle melted, was not covered in the Wilder version but it was in the Depp version, and that one was noted in the book as a mark of Wonka's brilliancy. Now I wasn't very fond of the idea to make Grandmother Georgina showing signs of dementia, as her novel counterpart did not, but I could live with it, as her role was only very minor.

Clint Eastwood perfected the antihero role. And like most antiheroes Dirty Harry has his own ethical code which can put him at odds with both the good guys and bad guys. For he is neither. He can be seen as good as his code will permit him to do whatever it takes to get bad guys off the street thus making the world a safer place…. But the same code can mean that the methods aren’t justified for the ends that he achieves so I disagree with Dirty Harry inclusion as the character was never intended to be a hero or a good guy

Any character who won't take no for an answer, whether they're male or female, is a villain. Movies should not romanticize characters harassing their crush until they finally relent because that's called stalking. No means no and you can still be friends, but stop trying to pressure them into going out with you! Sometimes they're just not interested in you and no amount of gifts or surprising them at work will change that. Boundaries are not a bad thing!
@dhenderson18108 күн бұрын
If you never had to convince someone to go out with you, no one would ever get together. Maybe women should not be taught to "play hard to get". Be honest and you either love the guy or you don't. Don't play games. Everyone needs to be completely honest and then there are no excuses for miscommunication. Make your intentions clear.
@bobbokil31477 күн бұрын
Do you have any idea that there are thousands of couples out there who have had long loving marriages…marriages that would never have happened if not for persistence of the man to win over the woman, and sometimes that opposite was true. Obviously, there is a definite line between courtship and stalking. Nuance is needed in this subject. Unfortunately, woke culture has tried very hard to murder nuance.
@briannab.17126 күн бұрын
It's ok to be a little persistent, but if someone has made it clear they're not interested, then you should listen to them. Unfortunately, many people, women in particular, like to play hard to get and encourage people to be overly persistent so they'll do it even to someone who is genuinely not into them. I just think too many films glorify it when the character moves into stalker territory and is generally a creep.
@dhenderson18106 күн бұрын
@briannab.1712 I agree but it is what women seem to be encouraged to do. I think everyone needs to be honest at the start and lay your cards on the table. Best that way. No misunderstandings. I will ask a girl out for a coffee. I ask once, and if she says "No", I move on and it is up to her to make the next move, if there is one. I'm not doing all the chasing.

@marilynsobel741410 күн бұрын
None of these people are real, remember. But Dirty Harry is more realistic, and therefore more dangerous as a role model than Batman. In movies, villains are usually cartoonish figures that don't resemble real people. The reason people like Dirty Harry is because he goes after the kind of people THEY don't like. And some white men certainly don't care if someone is racist or misogynistic.
