No one “stays up” to watch SNL anymore. Tape it, zip thru the ads, watch a couple of Taylor Swift promotional performances, & get on the laptop to show others where to see the latest “Live” tape! “WEBSTER” had more controversy than the latest excuse of improv featuring all your latest/safest superstars of Hollywood. A big yawn! Lorne Michaels, please, STOP! You’re insulting the pioneers who made you the selfish, rich, old fogey (the original targets of SNL) you now are! 👎☹️

One thing not mentioned regarding The Blues Brothers was the amazing band behind Dan and John. Steve Cropper on guitar and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, who were also in Booker T. & the M.G.'s. The sax player was Lou "Blue Lou" Marini and Tom Malone played the trombone. Those two were part of the regular SNL band and had previously been in Blood, Sweat & Tears. Also on guitar was Matt "Guitar" Murphy, who had performed with many blues legends such as Howlin' Wolf, Little Junior Parker, and Ike Turner. I mean, this was a REAL band, a superstar group of musicians, so it's no wonder that the music that The Blues Brothers played on the show and in the movies was outstanding!

Oh, but what about the Killer Bees and the Land Shark? The Bees were a favorite Halloween costume at the time. My very favorite part of that "Henry Kissinger" interview was when Baba Wawa asked him what the high point of his career was. He answers, "1973 when I won the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the Vietnam War." "And the low point?" "1975, when the Vietnam War ended." I graduated high school in 1975, so this was a delightful treat EVERY Saturday Night!!

Difficult to choose such a list when limited to 10. Mine would have included Samurai (insert profession here), Wild and Crazy Guys, Killer Bees, Roseanne Roseannadanna and the Weekend Update (only skit still running to this day from the original show). And the number one on my list would be King Tut by Steve Martin. Even though he wasn't a cast member, he wrote it to perform on SNL, and it became the first zeitgeist from the series. Just my 2 cents.

The episode with Sean Penn where he punched the Church Lady in the mouth and began fighting her and the Church Lady yells out "Help me Jesus" and then starts winning the fight. Penn was married to Madonna at that time and the Church Lady had insulted her being overtly sexual and that's when he punched the Church Lady character. I've searched KZbin for that skit but have been unsuccessful. I'd love to watch it again.

"Ed Grimley" was a character from Second City TV, another top comedy sketch show based around a fictional UHF TV station "Channel 90" that ran contemporaneously with Saturday Night Live. It was from Canada and included "Canadian Content" (which was usually cut out for commercials in the U.S. ) featuring "the McKenzie Brothers." "Edith Prickly", "Gut Caballero", and "Johnny LaRue" were characters who worked at the "station" along with Ed Grimley. Many, if not most, of the stars on this show later became stars on SNL.

The show was still new, we didn't yet know what to expect from it, and we didn't know Kauffman. He came on stage, just him and a phonograph and a record. 14 years old in 1978 and I was amazed, shocked, surprised, and basically when I wasn't trying to understand the adult content at times, I was doubled over laughing. But I was raised on Second City being a Canadian.

Well, this top 10 definitely hit some greats but I think there are some hardcore runners-up which weren't even given an honorable mention. Phil Hartman's "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer." Mike Meyers' "Coffee Talk with Linda Richman." Kevin Nealon and Dana Carvey in "Pumping Up With Hanz and Franz." Al Franken's "Daily Affirmations With Stuart Smalley." Absolutely any of Dennis Miller's or Norm Macdonald's "Weekend Update" entries. Almost everything Adam Sandler or Chris Rock did, and almost every skit where Jon Lovitz busted out his tagline, "Yeah... that's the ticket!" Finally, even though they were just one-offs, Christopher Walken's "Trivial Psychic" and Alec Baldwin's Christmas guest appearance on the usually lame "NPR's Delicious Dish" which revolved around his, "Sweet and Salty Schweddy Balls."

In 5 years, if you do this exact same list again, I believe in the top 5 will be *Kenan Thompson* doing *"What's Up With That?!"* and *"Black Jeopardy."* 😁

I thought that Nick the lounge singer was completely forgotten. It didn't seem all that popular at the time, compared to others not mentioned, such as Mr. Bill or John Belushi's Samurai.

I think Mr. Bill and the Killer Bees should have been listed. I was introduced to SNL with the Cone heads and Killer Bees as my sister was dating a Latino and they loved it. I introduced my own character in West Berlin while in the Army. His name was Mr. Jackboot, sometimes knows as Comrade Jackboot. I made him out of playdough and he went on training missions with me, where he would get stepped on, smashed by sandbags, and get shot through by blank rounds. He would even scream for help, asking the guards in the East German guard towers to climb the wall and rescue him "Doughboy City" as it was nicknamed, ran along the Berlin Wall as it runs along the East German countryside).

I was 13 when SNL debuted in 1975, so I got to see a lot of the early stuff. I even saw the low-rated mock documentary "All You Need is Cash" when it replaced SNL one week. That Rutles film actually included appearances by SNL cast members like Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, and Dan Aykroyd. Too many Americans missed out on something special that night!

I was always a fan of the sort of obscure, forgotten skits. The Scotch Boutique comes to mind. Also, Bill Murray and someone else played these ex-cop creeps who still acted like cops in their apartment building.. And I loved Belushi playing a bouncer and telling Stephen Bishop how he hated his song “On and On” and denied him entrance🤣

Not one of their best, but one that I remember dearly was a specific installment of a recurring skit on Weekend Update during the Murphy/Piscopo years. It was a pun segment with Tim Kazurinsky as Dr. Jack Badofsky doing puns on a specific word of the day. 99% of the time the puns were so awful that they weren't funny at all and only seemed designed to get a reaction of disgust from Brad Hall. But on one magical night the word was "orgasm" and the skit just slayed. I wish I could find that one online...
