Paul Brown also pops up with signing Tommie Smith to the Cincinnati Bengals after the 1968 Summer Olympics "Silent Gesture". Smith spent three seasons with the club, but mostly on the Taxi Squad. Brown was succinct with the local press on why Smith was signed -- "He's been contacted by a lot of teams. One thing is certain, he's fast enough." -- and said little else about trying to convert the controversial world-class sprinter into a wide receiver.

Kenny Washington played quarterback in college, but was a running back in the pros. The quarterback position was (and still is) the dominant leadership position on the team for players. So, no, no NFL team in the segregation era was going to have a Black QB leading white players.
