@@ManOfAlkebulan I don't think that would stick. According to the transcript, it wasn't just some Karen using the cops as attack dogs; the caller said that he did not believe the person(Elijah) was armed and that he did not believe that anyone was in immediate danger. Elijah was different; he behaved oddly in social situations and the caller may have thought he needed help. The police chose to ignore what the caller told them and brutalize him.

I agree. I understand that cops have to respond to calls but if they take just a few moments to consider that the person they're checking out might have something else going on with them OTHER than being a violent criminal trying to get away from them they might be able to actually conduct an investigation. Only then MAYBE they'll see some of these people calling the cops constantly aren't doing it for any real concern for public safety.

@k-matsu
@k-matsu 2 жыл бұрын
You cannot be "resisting arrest" if the arrest is baseless and illegal in the first place. This is where the US system has to change. Police officers break the law all the time, and it isnt just in situations like shooting black people. Raise your hand if youve ever seen a cop car run a red light, pull a U-turn, exceed the speed limit, etc. Now that everyone on the entire Internet has their hand in the air, let's deal with the fundamental problem that this highlights: Police officers have to be held to just as high a standard, as far as obeying laws is concerned, as anybody else in the country. In fact, if the law enforcement system was run properly, it should be immediately obvious that they need to meet an even HIGHER standard. You might think it is silly to suggest that police officers are doing something terrible by breaking traffic laws. But it is the entire attitude of being "above the law" that has to change, if the problems that exist in US police culture are ever to change. If average street cops were subject to discipline every time they made an improper arrest (= anything where they have to drop charges, or face a potential lawsuit), most of these recent incidents would never have happened. Just run down the list (McClain, George Floyd, Eric Garner ...), and almost every single case involves a cop accosting someone who did nothing wrong, and the person in question reacting with the perfectly normal, human behaviour of "fight-or-flight reflex". At the end of the day, you can only fix a human-based problem by addressing the individual humans involved, and making sure they meet the basic standards of obedience to the law and respect for other individuals, that you would demand of anyone else in a position of authority.

The world was a better place with Elijah McClain in it. This young man on his own taught himself to play the violin. Because it was his favorite instrument. What he did with his musical ability. Crooked law enforcement and politicians are protected from justice by their own design. But the vast majority hate the state of things... A hundred million people want it all to change! Nothing can stop that many voices when they voice their demands in unison and with resolve! Democracies can't survive when subjugated by self policing elites and authority figures who get different rules and privileges than the rest. They're OUR public servants FFS! @@Jamez84: Bingo! I just watched the body cam video. They had no right to stop him. In order to be lawfully detained the police need "reasonable and articulable suspicion that you have committed or are about to commit a crime." Just saying "you're suspicious" is NOT a reason to detain someone against their will.

More evidence that police unions are dangerous and show the worst of unions. "Did nothing wrong"?!?!! This case is indeed haunting! Just reading his last words still causes me to weep. How could they have heard him and acted the way they did? Monsters.

@@snowsim Yes. I support unions, I think when they're done well, they're hugely important. But many Police Unions go on protecting individuals who are a clear danger to the public. I do not want to see them broken! There has been a deliberate, organized and we'll financed effort to break unions for decades now, which is part of why the middle class is disappearing. But with Police Unions, MUCH better rules need to be negotiated re: abuse of power. They always talk about bad apples...but except in rare cases and under huge public pressure, they do not remove or punish them!

As a long-time medic, agree completely. This was epic EMS fail. Medics never did independent assessment, never checked his airway or vital signs, blood glucose, heart rhythm, etc. He was not even moving when the so-called medic gave him the injection, with no medical indication (taking order from cop, no communication with medical director supervising them, no objective basis for 'weight-based dosing" bullsh*t); Even if he had been combative or resistant, EMS job to talk to him; only if absolutely necessary for their safety and Elijah's could sedate him with low dose of a safe med, of which they had several other options. The only reason ketamine might ever be used in the field is if they need to intubate a combative patient, and even then with low dose, not using weight estimate based on nothing. Medics were treating the cops, not the patient. I don't know if a jury would find the medics criminally guilty, but they proved themselves incompetent and unethical.
