I hope you're not implyomg that Trump is lucid, because in certain regards he is not. he confabulates a great deal, that is, makes up stuff which he knows will sound superficially plausible to many but has no basis in fact. He repeats certain empty phrases or mantras obsessively. In his own way he may be teaching his followers the Trumpian catechism, but I have another thery. Maybe he doesn't have many ideas in his head, so he uses a lot of verbal 'filler'. He also knows what will get a rise out of 'his ' crowd, so he says it. He is not behaving like a responsible adult of venerable age, but like a child with Oppositional defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder, maybe an adolescent hoodlum ripe for reform school. Exactly. When he zoned out spectacularly early on, surely that was an adverse neurological event. It reminded me of absence seizures, which may cloud consciousness before, during, and after, but do not involve convulsions. On the one hand, if Biden has been in rapid decline since his relatively successful State of the Union address, the public needs to know about it, and measures should be taken to lighten his duties, pending either dramatic recovery (less likely) or his retirement (more likely, and possibly forced by electoral loss). Now if he is as sick as he appears, then the media and the pundits (to say nothing of the Republicans) have been judging him too harshly. Even his friends and admirers have been saying what a terrible job he did during the debate. But if he had an adverse neurological event onstage, or if he was affected by a combination of dementia plus the common cold, was it REALLY his fault? Or do his handlers and masters of spin, who always try to defend his reputation and defer to his wishes out of so-called respect for the office, also bear some of the responsibility? One Republican pundit on CNN, who is a party man but nt all in for Trump, spoke rightly when he said: 'We should all pray for the president.'

My grandmother had dementia. Joe is in the early stages of it and has good medication. What you saw at the debate is probably sundowning not feeling good not remembering, difficulty speaking etc. what you saw the next day is classic dementia he felt much better had more energy. Biden is the only Democrat who has ever defeated Trump. Biden is four years older, but so is Trump. The talking heads keep reminding us that Trump is afraid of his base, but maybe Biden's base deserves some respect. Not that DT believes in any religion or ideology other than what works for him: but he and Bernie represent the extremes of the american political spectrum. I think America's real vulnerability stems from inability to govern from the Center, or find sufficient weight of representation for the Center. Biden wasn't strong enough to do it. He tends to sniff the wind. When the Center is marginalized, terrible things can happen. Have you stiudied the rise of fascism? In particular, look at the Spanish Civil War, about which Mr. Sanders probably knoed s thing or two. The Center was almost completely erased during the final elections before conflict broke out. Also it's not a bad thing to realize that governmetn has responsibility on behalf of all citizens, even the classes which we consider beneath us, whether economically or morally. Finally, ability to see the other side of the coin is important when makinng decisions about complex matters. (Ecclesiastes 7:18) 'It is good that you grasp one thing and also not let go of the other, for the one who fears God comes forth with both of them.' On one side, you've got Trump boasting about how he's going to expel millions of uncodumented people after holding them in internment camps. On the other you've got pro-Palestinian students who chant Hamas slogans calling for the elimination of the Jewish State, which actually would be genocide. Who needs this nonsense?

As I'm sure you've heard many times, the course of geriatric mental decline can vary greatly according to the individual profile and the stag of progression in the disease. but the short-term memory is I don't know how it is with your friend, but with my mom some abilities (like reading, articulation of words) are very much intact but others have disappeared. Variability of performance is obviously an issue with Biden. I have variable performance too, but by the grace of God I am considered a reliable worker. In the president's case, his supporters make too much of his good days and his opponents tke malicious pleasure in every mistake or missteps he makes. Objectivity would serve him and the country much better. The question for me is this: does Biden have what psychiatrists call 'insight' into his worsening condition? If he lacks such insight, and his handlers wait upon him (or Donald Trump's mean-spirited acolytes) . to decide when he will retire, tey are not responsible handlers. Their duty is to God first, then the country, then Mr. Biden, and last of all to their party.
