I’m fully Hispanic and had MANY arguments about race with my elderly (Tejano/Mexican) mother who was “white” and VERY racist, though she never admitted it. If you think that Latinos “can’t be White Supremacists” here in the U.S, you’re either clueless or in denial. All you have to do is LISTEN to how they talk about other races, including their own who my mom would call, “Indios” for merely being a slightly darker shade than us… I explained to her how GENETICS work several times but as Jane Elliot famously quipped, “Prejudice is an emotional commitment to IGNORANCE.” 😢

37% is more than most people pay. With the way our standard deductions are set up a very large percentage of people pay no federal income tax and some actually get back more than they paid in. Fair would be everyone paying exactly the same percentage of their income. Keep in mind our federal government was supposed to have limited and defined powers so it really does not need near as much as it currently takes in if it followed our constitution. State powers are supposed to be numerous and indefinite and as such each state may need to tax more as per the values, needs and expectations of its citizens. This would vary from state to state since we are all different. I think we should totally abolish the IRS and the federal income tax. A national sales tax with food and medicine not taxed would be fair and would tax those that spend more the most. With food and medicine not taxed the poor would pay very little in sales tax. How did I know this? I grew up as poor as it gets. My dad was a sanitation worker in a small town that didn't pay much. But because he and my mother were smart with the money they did make we got by. Food is not taxed where I grew up so sales tax was virtually not existent for us.

As an Asian American male who trains heavily in firearms (and martial arts), I find that right-leaning people project onto me that I am one of them, as if I am part of the definition of "white" - solely based on common interests (shooting and prepping), training with professional gear, and wearing familiar logo'd swag typical of gun guys. As I watch your video clips of paramilitary groups training, it's not all that different from the training afforded to me. It I wore a baseball cap, sunglasses, and covered my face with a white mask, the Patriot Front would not know any difference, for example.... I'm dismayed by some of the hateful things they say about groups of mainland Chinese students who show up at the range to shoot, as well as the racist things they may say about black people at the range. It's one thing to poke fun at novice shooters or people who haven't been formally trained making all kinds of mistakes, but underlying a lot of it is resentment or suspicion - and they talk openly with me about it because they mistakenly think that I am "white" - a part of their in-group. They openly admit that if they met me on the street and not know anything about me, then they would write me off as some nerd, but because they know I'm dangerous and train seriously, they respect that type of coolness and dedication. Sometimes when I point out to my right wing friend that I am in fact a minority, he waves that off as if I'm the "right kind of minority" - correcting me saying that I'm American, not Asian American, only because I was born here and have adopted their mannerisms and understand cultural nuances. (He feels that the "Asian" adverb is divisive and artificial. Huh? How about erasing?). While I am relieved to not be targeted and accepted by most white people, but at the same time, I am not comfortable with how they are not as accepting towards others. This twisted perception adds to the complication of being treated as the "other" in this country.... But really, the lesson they should learn is that we have a lot more in common than we have in terms of differences, but even those differences are superficial and not insurmountable. It really is just a culture of intolerance towards others and totally subjective. In the end, I think they just want more people to be like them, rather than being "forced" to conform towards more open-minded norms. As a stark reminder, I sometimes show up dressed preppy or in a business suit, picking up something from the gunsmith on a weekday, and at first they didn't recognize me out of uniform, but eventually got used to recognizing me in different genres. However, they continue to believe that how I normally look is just a disguise and that the real me is the tactically dressed version on the weekends.... totally subjective... I just call it a sheepdog dressed as a sheep, at times... if that's what they want to believe.... Just like artwork, perception can become reality... The funny part is other customers buying firearms and going through the application process stare at me and are puzzled by the familiarity and friendliness of employees at the gun range for somebody who looks like he doesn't belong there.... I'm very much the gray man who does not look like their type and who is always underestimated, except for the bad guys who sense something is "off" about this one....

My dad is white green eyed of Spanish descent. Met my native Indian mom. We are all brown with no European features and I embrace it everyday. Historically all my white and Asian girlfriends have always stated my color- “I wish I could be your color.” Being brown can be a face palm, but love the fact that I don’t have to worry about certain cancers, liver spots and being pink or beet red being out in the sun more than my genetics can handle. My skin never migrated here. I just wish Caucasian males wouldn’t be so envious. This science truly tells us a lot from where many of us are from. Respect, honor it and take care of it.

I think that based on the old cast system that existed in some Latin American countries when they were just colonies it's effects are still felt to this day. One way people categorize themselves as superior not just because of their wealth but also because of their relative closeness to whiteness. The lighter skin tone the better. I as a Mexican American can attest to the racism that pervades within Hispanic culture.

At one point Kathleen Belew seems to be regurgitating the ever popular trope that certain groups of Europeans weren't "classified" as white at some point in US history. Whenever I ask people to describe exactly how these Europeans were "classified" as "non-white", they either repeat their assertion or fall totally silent. The reality is Europeans were never singled out for discrimination where it actually counted: they were never targeted by segregation or miscegenation laws, never prohibited from owning property or voting, and always qualified for US citizenship when the 1790 law was in effect (the 1790 Act limited American citizenship to 'free white persons'). The only groups that have been added to the "white" category as of late are certain Hispanics, Middle Easterners and North Africans. But whiteness was always far more ambiguous than many people care to acknowledge. Hispanics like Fuentes were always able to pass themselves off as white. Some light-skinned Native Americans and even African-Americans have managed to pass as white at some points in US history. This needs to be put into context so people understand how this social category is actually constructed.

Historically speaking, we can see the colonization of Central and South America by the Spanish as a reason to see Hispanic family names in the supremacy movement. The Spanish Conquistadores, sent by the Spanish Crown to find riches and take territory, were mainly male administrators and military representatives. There was much intermingling with the indigenous peoples and with the enslaved Africans. The colonizers created a strict social hierarchy, supported by law, based on the race of the parents. The more European the heritage, the higher in the social status one stood. Consequently, we could call the movement a European supremacy movement, not simply a white supremacy movement.

Agreed. These inane debates about who's "white" fail to account for the ambiguity in this category. People who were white were people who simply looked like they were white -which includes virtually all Europeans, and even some non-Europeans who were able to pass (such as light-skinned Native Americans, and even some African-Americans who looked predominately European). But since these hate groups today define their ideology as "pan-Europeanness", it is probably better and more helpful to describe them as European supremacists. Note this doesn't mean they are any less racist than previous hate groups.

I'm originally from Arizona and grew up in an affluent neighborhood and let me tell you Hispanics/Latinos are some of the most racist people I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. And open they're about it. I've stopped talking to parts of my family members that were so blatantly hateful towards gays and other races specially black and other Latinos. The worst is that they hide and justify their hate with religion. I'm Hispanic and pretty tan. It's so illogical to me.
