What is critical to understand is that Trudeau has spent the last two years visiting businesses and economic stakeholders in the Red States. Canada took this approach the last time Trump imposed tariffs, and it was successful. NAFTA dropped the tariffs where they can flood us with Mexican made things. Trump's tariffs will undo and reverse NAFTA. They'll be coming back to make their things here because of the tariffs they'll pay to bring their things in. I'm a Canadian, there are a couple things at play. There will be a Federal election in Canada sometime in the next year, but no later than November 2025, so a lot of political posturing is happening. The three opposition parties fling a lot of mud and anger that plays well in the media. The provincial leaders also muck around. Meanwhile, the government has to manage what Trump is proposing. The liberals are the same government that stared down trump 5 years ago regarding NAFTA. Canada gave up nothing of consequence, except allowing US pharmaceuticals free rein in Canada (Nancy Pelosi put an end to that, so even that ended in Canada's benefit). Trudeau knows how to handle Trump. There is also a political difference on how Liberals and Conservatives view how the states are run compared to USA. The liberal side is confident that the way Canada is run isn't too bad, the conservatives think it is all bad, and if Canada doesn't change its ways, USA will crush Canada. So panic on the conservative side, calm on the liberal side.
@rb239rtrКүн бұрын
@@reginaucker3533 Exports to USA are 23% of Canada's GDP. About $400 billion Canadian goods go south and about $350 billion American goods go north. Additionally, many billions of google, apple, facebook profits leave Canada as well as other profits being sent south to American head offices. What is partially evident is it seems to Canadians that Trump wants to continue exporting the $350 billion to Canada, but import zero from Canada. So obviously that is a concern. Another concern are the migrants in the USA. Canada is dependent on a lot of produce grown in the USA and in Mexico- a mass expulsion will drive that cost up for Canadians. And in regard to migrants, about 150k migrants entered Canada from the USA- given the small size of Canada, this is equivalent to 1.5m entering the southern USA border. BTW- around 20k Mexicans and Indians cross into the USA from Canada.
@carlyar528114 сағат бұрын
@@rb239rtr interestingly those crossings were only in 2023. There were very few crossings, less than 2000 people in 2022. In 2017/2018 there were tens of thousands coming FROM the US into Canada. I suspect that with trump’s mass deportations, we will face another Round of people, crossing legally into Canada from the United States.
@carlyar528114 сағат бұрын
@@rb239rtr something like 20% of vegetables in the US come from Canada. So yes, Canada relies on produce grown in the United States, particularly lettuce and citrus fruit, the trade of fruits and vegetables goes both ways.

broader impact of Trump's first-term tariffs on U.S. manufacturing, with the Federal Reserve finding that U.S. manufacturers ended up facing higher costs for raw materials they imported, as well as from retaliatory tariffs from other nations. The number of U.S. manufacturing jobs fell slightly during Trump's first term, from about 12.4 million to 12.2 million workers, although a range of factors could account for that decline. revenue would largely be paid by U.S. consumers and businesses, experts say. That's because tariffs are not paid by the countries that export to the U.S., as Trump maintains, but rather by U.S. importers.

tariff proposals would cost middle-class U.S. households in increased taxes each year, as projected by PIIE based on a 10% tariff rate. The think tank also estimated for those in the bottom half of U.S. income brackets, Trump’s tariff proposals would reduce households’ after-tax income by approximately 3.5%. The left-leaning Center for American Progress has estimated a higher $2,500 annual cost to middle-class Americans based on 10% tariffs and 60% on Chinese goods, which they project would go up to $3,900 if Trump levied 20% tariffs on most imported goods-which is still below the rate he proposed Monday.
