Converting miniatures is a great way to add unique characters to your game and is a great way to start learning to sculpt. Before sculpting my own miniatures I converted minis in my collection. Join me as I discuss how you can get better at sculpting miniatures by converting the minis you already have.
Bits used in this conversion:
-Head: Space Wolves Thunderwolf Cavalry
-Torso: Kharadron Overlords Skywardens
-Left Arm: Goliath Gang
-Legs: Corpse Grinder Gang
-Gun: Leagues of Votann Ion Blaster + old Space Marine Bolter
-Accessories: Goliath Gang, Palanite Enforcers, Imperial Guard

Rokksville really is a constant source of inspiration, their use of disparate bits to make wholly new looking figures is sometimes mind blowing! Love your personal take on the conversion and creating another wonderfully characterful miniature. Carry on being awesome and take care. (Premature commenting there before I got to the end of the video 😅 ) I haven’t played any games for quite a long time, it’s the converting and creating characters I love the most about the hobby. Even when I kinda dropped out of the hobby and going to stores etc I was converting the odd miniature here and there just for my own creative outlet. There’s something to be said for creating your own characters in a setting you love, a bit more of a personal investment. And I absolutely love seeing the things that other people create and that feeds my inspiration and urge to convert further.

I like to sculpt minis because it's a way to tell stories. It's also a way yo express myself the same way strategy in game is expressive. Honestly, self expression is probably the most important part of hobbying/gaming for me.

Fun fact, I started converting a bunch of models to play Gorkamorka, I make a grot commissar, gave him a Commissar hat and coat. good fun that was Need more conversion videos like this, kind a prefer a slower pace for them, like your hood and cape tutorial videos

I got into sculpting from playing Orks in 40k during 3rd. Edition....half our units didn't even have models and you had to convert them yourself! 😂

I started sculpting because I saw an article many years ago by Mike McVey about his Emperor vs Horus scene. Then another about creating a Blood Angel sergeant that matched some artwork. Both used a lot of green stuff techniques to create what was needed to fill in the missing parts. This lead me to articles on the web years later about actually sculpting full figures, then Andy Foster and Kev White pages, and then to 1listsculpting, then to you and the other sculptors I have been lucky enough to meet and call friends. So mostly started as a converter but then became a passion to create my own sculpts and try to be an "artist" thanks for all you do Tom.

Those two articles were probably the first I ever saw on sculpting as well. It was such a rare glimpse into this world back then. I appreciate the kind words. You're a testament to the catch phrase, Keep Sculpting!

honestly I started painting on canvas first, only when I was starting to hobby did I get into sculpting. green stuff used to be frustrating to me, but the more I worked with it the more I warmed up to working with the stuff. I never wanted to have "my guys" look like every other army I saw. creating to me is like breathing, and to go along with the standard feels like holding my breath, I'm just so happy there are so many creatives in this community.

I used to start kitbashing... only light stuff like headswaps. Never really dove deeply into the whole kitbashing thing beyond ready made modifications (Headswaps, changing hands and such.. the easy stuff without putty work). Left the hobby, came back 20 years later, wanted a custom Kill team... started to do heavy kitbashing and realized i really like sculpting minatures.

That's awesome! With the variety of kits and great games focused on smaller teams, now is the perfect time for being able to focus on this kind of modeling.

I'm a railway modeler, so very different, but I have sculpted a few figures now since watching your videos, at 1/43.5 scale, because the available ones are either crude, or for the nice new 3D printed ones, not the figures I want. But I totally get what you said, for me too, I prefer making models (figures or anything else) than operating the trains.

I'm not quite on the sculpting my own things (although I want to) but always been a converter which goes way back to space crusade, I like making my teams/armies my own with there own look and as everything I ever use has something converted for it a lot of friends sort of expect me to do something so I try not to disappoint :)

I sculpt for the RPG's I run because I subscribe to the James Edward Raggi IV school of adventuring: Always make monsters impactful and memorable. If I throw just-another-aboleth/balor/dragon onto the table, it gets lost in my players' minds along with everything else they've seen in the Monster Manual. But if the enemy is neither recognizable nor forgettable, they seem to really _engage_ with the encounter.

Oooo! That is a really cool thing you're doing for your games. You're players are really fortunate.

I actually started making some small changes to my minis, then I went on to fix some broken stuff for my mom(like a monkey sculpture that was missing a hand, I guess you could say I created the monkey's paw). Never sculpted a full mini tho, but I really like doing small changes here and there, as I like 3D sculpting(my pc can't take it anymore, but I'm looking forward to buy a new and get back to it) in the end, I guess it's just like you said: I just have some kind of artistic nature, and I chose this path because I really like the world, and want to make things my own style

Lovely conversion! On my part, I just can't help it some times hha. If I get a box and I don't like some of the models or I won't use their profiles, then I'll likely change them so I like them more, or I have a profile that's useful to my playstile. Or sometimes the mini just doesn't exists (I play Infinity the game) or is out of production. Also because is fun and I just love doing it XD

Huh that's interesting. So even if you didn't bake it hot enough to melt the styrene, the clay would still melt or dissolve it?

Good point. I hadn't even thought of that! I've never applied poly clay to my styrene models, but I had the clay in a plastic container once and it was totally eating away at the container. Thanks for calling that out.

8 months later, I came here to say this. Used Polly clay to do a proof of concept conversion so that i could play around more. A few days it had disolved everything it touched. Luckily fixed it all up with green stuff!

I have been learning to sculpt as I am working on my own table top game and I am tired of having to use minis that belong to other companies and don't actually look like what I have envisioned. Plus, if I decide to release the game, I cannot necessarily use minis that belong to those other companies.

I'd also recommend not putting lead minis into your oven. Lead has a higher melting point (~600ish °F), but you wouldn't want any toxic fumes floating around in your oven. While most manufacturers use lead-free pewter, there's still a few that use lead in 2023 to keep costs down or because the minis are just old.
