"You know what playing is, Trumpy?" "Yes, it's where I break you in half."
@trustno1732 ай бұрын
For those not in the know; Pod People, or it's original title Extra Terrestrial Visitors, was originally conceived as an alien slasher movie but then E.T. came out and took the world by storm. The producers/studio insisted this movie be reworked halfway through preproduction and turned into something more family friendly to cash-in on E.T.'s success (despite this there's an F-bomb in the uncut version) and this is why the movie feels like two different scripts mashed together. Also, I've read that the okay sign is the Spain equivalent to the middle finger, so that explains the iconic "It Stinks!" moment. Also, very weirdly, Trumpy's fate of being left alone in the wilderness (unlikely to survive very long as Crow points out) closely resembles the fate of a good alien in the prototype version of both E.T. and Poltergeist that Spielberg originally planned called Night Skies, about a family in the countryside being terrorized by evil aliens, only for the young alien of the group to befriend the family's autistic son which causes it to turn on its kind to defend the human family. The story apparently ended with the family escaping, the aliens leaving earth and the good alien left to die alone in the wilderness. Spielberg realized that there would be very jarring tonal shifts, so decided to split up the 'boy befriend an alien' story and 'family terrorized by supernatural forces' stories into two separate movies.

Possibly the only time public radio mainstay Hearts of Space was ever referenced on a TV comedy show. God bless these guys for repeatedly doing jokes that maybe ten people in the audience will get. ❤

This episode is really special to me. It's the very first one I ever watched! So much to love here. Some truly iconic moments, riffs, in-jokes and host segments! Some of MST3K's finest work! And I do so enjoy the "Chief? McCloud!" running gag! Huge thank you to this page for putting these episodes up! So appreciated!

Probably their best episode ever, right up there with "The Final Sacrifice." I wish Tjardus would be a good sport and let them air "The Final Sacrifice" online. I know he's since become a great filmmaker in Canada and he probably doesn't want it release to perhaps preserve people's perceptions of his capabilities, but in comparison, as Spock might say about the success Jennifer Anniston now enjoys, "Everyone has a 'Leprechaun' in their resume somewhere." I only have a VHS recording from the original 98 broadcast, and I guard it fiercely. I can't afford to buy the DVD set that has it, even if I was able to mortgage a house. lol There was a REALLY AWESOME guitar song called "Rowsdower Saves Us," which had about 100K views and was based off of the "video poker music" in "Final," but even that has been taken down (not sure if Tjardus demanded it. 😢 At least we still have all the "Puma Man" song parodies to enjoy, though.
