Fun fact: Rondo Hatton (the brute man) played essentially the same role as a secondary character in Sherlock Holmes and the Pearl of Death alongside the great Basil Rathbone.

I think I remember an AMC special segment on him that referenced these two roles.

Rondo Hatton was a gentle giant, according to everyone who knew him. He passed away much too soon. Only 51. And, in High School, before the disease took him over, he was voted the Handsomest Boy in High School. No joke. He was so handsome!

This movie is actually fairly watchable as far as Poverty Row movies from the 40s go. Better than what I'm used to at least. Seems to have more than three locations, the opening credits are kinda fun, the camera isn't locked down and far away like a stage production - not as good as the movie it was probably paired with in the double bill but it seems perfectly reasonable. Episode's hilarious too, Mike losing it at the store owner is a highlight.

Oh yes.... the Brute Man. I believe this is MST3Ks first Universal Horror film and boy is this one a divisive episode. Putting the tragedy that was Hatton's life aside and the distribution issues, the Brute Man suffers from the same problems that the Silver and Bronze age of Universal Horror suffered from. I will elaborate. This movie came out five years after the Wolf Man. While I have my own opinion, the film was a financial and critical darling and the Brute Man has simular elements. The Wolfman had a great cast and a great use of budget. There was something there that allowed the film to stand shoulder to shoulder with Frankenstein and Dracula. The Brute Man doesn't so as a result the flaws stand out. The wishy washy portrayal of it's title character is annoying despite Hatton doing everything he can in his performance. Lon Chaney jr managed to make a stalking adulterous manchild look like a tragic hero as what happened to him was mostly beyond his control. The Creeper does not have that excuse. He knows exactly what he's doing so any attempt to make him sympathetic falls flat. The Wolf Man had a strong supporting cast, like Claude Raines as one of the most tragic examples of the Agent Scully. The Brute Man is full of REALLY stupid people who don't act like people. And yet.... I do not hate this film. Universal Horror has a weird campy charm to it and that magic can be felt here. Even the Leech Woman had a Comic Book concept that would make a cool comic book story. Same here. Also if you feel the same way, check out the Creepers one other film, House of Horrors. It hasn't aged well either, but Hatton gives it his all.
