Today we check out the Fluance Fi70, perhaps the biggest and best bluetooth speaker I've ever seen. However, is it still considered a bluetooth speaker if it needs to be plugged in. But either way, this thing is huge and the sound is incredible.

In my opinion, if you need bluetooth to connect wirelessly to a speaker, it is a bluetooth speaker. It makes no difference if the speaker is powered by battery or from an outlet.

Brad Tomlinson I would agree Bluetooth is nothing to do with the power source, but how the audio is transmitted from one device to another. So is this case yes it is a Bluetooth speaker, just not portable.

That is not really an opinion, that is just how it is. Bluetooth is just the connectivity standard, not the act of carrying it around. A portable bluetooth speaker on the other hand it is not.

This sort of speaker is nice because you can place it in for example your bedroom, and play music without connecting a cable from your phone.

Look into Bluesound. With a Bluesound Powernode 2 you can connect wireless with your phone and connect seriously big wired speakers to it. Way bigger than this thing.

The middle cut out is for like other forms of interfaces. Say like a cd changer, or a fm tuner. It's similar to the concept of rack mounting. Just fits your small audio appliances, which the back of the speaker can be used to hide off cables since it is pretty large in size. :)

I would say that this still qualifies as a Bluetooth speaker since it is still technically a speaker, with "speaker" being a very broad term as "something that converts electrical impulses into sound". But if you want to get more detailed I would sub-categorize this as a Bluetooth stereo/cabinet/system since that's obviously the market this product was intended for -- a stationary home device.

Ok so what you’re thinking is a portable speaker. A Bluetooth speaker is a speaker that has Bluetooth built in. The fluance is a stationary bluetooth speaker. Yes, it is a Bluetooth speaker, no it’s not a portable Bluetooth speaker

Yes, this is a Bluetooth speaker. The whole reason for Bluetooth is that you don't have to be confined by a cord. It's like some wireless speakers mounted to the wall; you can't move them, but they're still Bluetooth. So... yeah

Yes, its bluetooth, but no, it's not portable. Bluetooth is great for being able to use your device and not be physically tied to the speaker, or for multiple devices to connect to the speaker. Being able to connect to a powerful speaker, using bluetooth, that isnt recording you? Sounds great to me. Looks great too.

I really do think it's still a bluetooth speaker. In my opinion, bluetooth speakers mean they have bluetooth connectivity and battery powered speakers, for me, caters more towards being portable speakers.
