So isn’t the true value of these meters in their tracking of the percentage of loss from one use to the next. Actual string bed tension/stiffness (the combination of tensions from both the mains and the crosses) is different from the reference tension (the tension we set to pull a single string). This being true, I always expect my gauges to read a little off from reference. I just take an average of 3-5 readings, mark it down after stringing and then consistently take readings from the same spot every time I use my sticks. That way I can track how much percentage wise I have lost. Once I lose beyond a certain point, I restring. So basically what I am saying is used this way all the gauges are useful.

Is that ezone a 100 or 98 inch racket head size? I think the MSV was set to 100. Might throw off the initial readings of racket is a 98.

Harry you though me a lot and I thank you but actually this devices DO NOT measure the stringing tension. If your stringing machine is properly calibrated you don't even need to measure after stringing. What this devices measure it's called THE DYNAMIC TENSION wich is different from the stringing tension 😉

The way I do it is I started with two rackets of equal size heads. One was strung at 52.5 and the other was strung at 55. The pitch from the 52.5 was D, the fourth line of the treble staff when struck by the side of the other racket. The one strung at 55 lbs, when struck by the other racket came in at F - fifth line of the treble staff. This method was 100% consistent. I used this method and when either racket played the way I like I tested the pitch with the assumption that a minor third musically equaled 2.5 pounds. When the racquets played the way I like I tested the pitch and it was B, the-third line of the treble staff. I re-strung my rackets to 50 lbs and sure enough, the pitch when struck was B, the middle line of the treble staff and the racquets played exactly the way I like. Summary: F, the top line of the treble staff was 55lbs, D, the fourth line of the treble staff was 52.5 lbs. and B, the middle line of the treble staff was 50 Lbs. I then tried this method on a friend's racquet which had a smaller head but the minor-third interval still equaled 2.5 lbs of pressure and he was able to prescribe the exact lbs of tension he liked by testing the starting pitch, (right after stringing), and then re-testing the pitch when he liked the feel. Tension equals pitch. That is exactly how pianos and all stringed instruments are tuned. A guitar tuner will read out the exact pitch by "hearing" the sound. P.S., yes, I am a composer and conductor by profession. The only time you will see me at the U.S. Open is if they decide to have a cocktail hour with piano accompiniment.

i use Tennis Vibes app on my android phone and it seems to be fairly accurate. i've tried it on 4 freshly strung strings. it's a free app.

MSV, whoever that is? You're a stringer aren't you? How do you not know MSV strings?

I would epect it to be accurate to within 250g. I am really surprised that you find it to be acceptable to within a few pounds or kilograms!!! Really surprised!!! Are tennis shoe sizes also acceptable to within a few centimeters? +/- 8 cm is OK? How about the weight of the racquet? +/- 8 lb also OK??? COMMON!!! IT IS JUST TOTALLY USELESS !!! and you should not recommend it even if it was free!!!!

I worked in electro/mechanical failure analysis for auto and trucking parts for decades, so I love stuff like this. This meter works on resonance frequency, super simplified here, that's when vibration is measured at its longest and highest reading. Like when a cartoon character is bonked with a shovel! There are many variables that would affect the reading, such as absorption by the surrounding material, like the racket, grip, your hand and so forth. Then there is the speed of the tap, force generated by the tap and the material used to generate the tap. If the racket was held in some type of clamp with two sharp and pointed tips and the tap was done with some spring loaded device then you would significantly cut down the margin of error.

Thanks for this video. I just purchased a mini stt and I’m currently awaiting it’s arrival. I’ve been trying to find the best measuring device for tension. This seems promising.

I use the Tourna Stringmeter... about $25. It seems to be pretty accurate. I check it right after I take my racquets off the stringer, and they are on the money... except when I string the Wilson Burn or Blade racquets. For some reason, the readings are a bit off with those because of their rectangle string spacing in the middle of the bed.

I use Tourna tool and it works fine and seems to be accurate if you use it according the instruction. It shows almost the same tension which was set on the machine

I have this Mini STT and Racquet Tune, and actually find that Racquet Tune gives more accurate and consistent results, measured right off of the machine.

To evaluate that STT machine a bit further, I would suggest testing a couple more rackets that you have just strung, ideally at different tensions like 52lbs and 56lbs. That would give you a good idea of the potential sensitivity of the tool. Additionally, I would consider seeing how the STT values change in a few spots around the centre of each frame to potentially get a more realistic 'average' tension for a racket.

Racquet Tune is just as good for most people, if not better, and only $5.
